City and CSD Joint Annexation Work Session Tomorrow Evening at City Hall
Decatur Metro | November 11, 2014 | 10:45 amThe Decatur City Commission and the Decatur Board of Education will hold a joint work session at City Hall tomorrow night starting at 6pm to review a draft of the Annexation Master Plan.
In the meantime, feel free to review the City’s Master Plan Work Session Presentation HERE or review a detailed, updated map of the proposed annexation areas HERE. You can also review the Enrollment report and Annexation Feasibility Study recently presented to the School Board regarding enrollment projects and financial implications of rising enrollments (with and without annexation) HERE.
Jets and Sharks!
I’m thinking more like 76 Trombones.
Trouble in River City!
You want me. You really really want me.
My thoughts exactly!

That work session packet is junk. “Do you want to be in Decatur or do you want to be in a new city?” is an assumption. There’s a saying about assumptions and a certain body spot that’s appropriate. “Mixed use” is a nice code word for apartments and lots of them! The Walmart, ask the county, Chamblee or Dunwoody about the number of police calls to their Walmart; plan of stationing 2 police cars there 24/7. The comment that the city schools will not be able to address “pressures” “with in the existing city limits” is complete non sense. Expanding Decatur kills Decatur and the school system! If Dectur goes sprawl then it sacrifices the essence that makes it desirable.
Something is going to have to be done, school-wise, because there’s too damn many kids for the current system. There’s twice as many kids in K-3 right now as there are at Renfroe, and half-again as many in K-3 as there are at DHS. Now, some of those kids may leave the CSD system, but a big chunk of them came here (well, were brought here) for the CSD system itself.
We’re gonna have to find somewhere to put the schools, and there really isn’t anywhere within current city limits that can hold another middle school. I mean, I guess we could eminent domain someone’s neighborhood, but that seems a bit over-the-top.
Having twice or three times as many kids at Renfroe is going to make the traffic on College untenable. What if everyone has to walk or bike to school unless they have a documented physical disability? Renfroe can’t be more than 1.5 miles from anywhere in the city. That’s a 25 minute walk.
Likewise, at the high school — no parking for students. They can walk. Save the greenspace.
I agree. Reduce the plans for student parking at the HS. Walking helps with space issues.
“What if everyone has to walk or bike to school unless they have a documented physical disability? Renfroe can’t be more than 1.5 miles from anywhere in the city. That’s a 25 minute walk.”
Such a policy would require supplying fainting couches for the helicopter parents.
1.5 miles is at least a 45 minute walk, probably closer to an hour for most kids these days. You just can’t walk 3-4 mph while texting and tweeting!
I don’t see that as an issue. Surely their iPhones will be stolen in short order, allowing them to focus on maintaining a brisk pace.
The sixth graders are mostly still small enough that we could send them to school via drones.
our sixth grader takes mass transportation aka school bus. per google maps we are 1.8 miles away from RMS and it would take 39 – 41 minutes to walk to RMS (our 6th grader does not own a smart phone so need to add additional time for that distraction). 🙂
Drones are cooler but school buses get the job done!
As I said on another thread, parking for high school students is a first world luxury although Americans view it as a rite of passage. It’s convenient and helps teens with practicing their driving around town. But it’s probably healthier and safer to have teens walking around town more than driving. And it takes the pressure off of families who cannot provide a car for their teen to drive because of logistics, finances, and/or parenting style. It definitely should not take priority over space for academics or sports.
On the few rainy days I have attempted to pick up my current Renfroe student this year I have noticed the traffic at Renfroe is worse than in years past. Unless it’s hailing or a hurricane, I am inclined not to pick up my kid via car anymore. The 6th grade class must be huge!
I think you’ve just illustrated the beauty of a self-regulating system. Increased traffic doesn’t necessarily need to be accommodated through massive infrastructure investments. Oftentimes, modest changes in behavior are the far better way to go.
+1 for Lean Urbanism!
OMG, Annexation! The sky is falling…on our already overcrowded schools! #wheresourmoat?
OK, had to get that out of my system. Y’all carry on…
you laugh J_T, but what happens when this massive group of kids turn 21? the bars will all be overcrowded. who will be laughing then?
They won’t want to frequent the bars where the geezers hang out. Everything will be alright.
True. In twenty years the cool kids will say “Only sad, aging hipsters go to Leon’s!”
