Flux Night, which took a break this year.
I’m going to miss the Georgia Shakespeare performances at Olgethorpe. Metamorphosis remains one of best live theater productions I’ve seen in Atlanta. On the other end of the brow, I miss the Silver Scream Spook Show that used to happen at the Plaza Theater. Goofy, non-pretentious fun. Memorials done, onto the living.
“For the money” wasn’t part of the question this time, but if it were, it’s hard to beat the Open-Mic Shootouts at Eddie’s Attic. Another bargain, for the opera lovers out there, are the GSU Opera Company performances at the Rialto. They’re doing La Boheme in April.
Shows at the Variety Playhouse are usually reasonably priced, and it remains my favorite live music venue.
At the moment, though, the arts collective Saiah might be doing the most interesting live art. They did the Civil War play Terminus at the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve earlier this year. Last year’s production of Moby Dick, staged in an abandoned Westside warehouse, was stunning.
If you had asked a year ago (or six months), the list would have to include our world-class symphony orchestra.
The Lantern Parade belongs on any list.

Fall play “Cyrano de Bergerac” at the high school next Thursday – Saturday nights.
I love Cyrano. “do you love the little birds so much that they come and sing to you, you give them this to perch on?”
Once upon a time when I was in around 5th grade, I had to memorize the nose poem and recite it. I fondly remember rehearsing it with my Dad who urged me to recite it with feeling and dramatic emphasis. I believe I had to read the play in French later on, probably in college. I don’t remember a word of it but I still love the play and my memories.
Well it WAS the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, but now…
I do always enjoy the Shakespeare Tavern.
