Grindhouse Killer Burgers Considering Building Fourth Atlanta Location in Decatur
Decatur Metro | October 1, 2014 | 3:27 pmGrindhouse Killer Burgers is considering building a fourth Atlanta location in downtown Decatur.
The proposed location is 433 North McDonough Street, which you all may know as “the school bus parking lot behind Chick-Fil-A”.
Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne confirmed that Grindhouse is considering the space. The Downtown Development Authority did a courtesy review of the project in September where it was determined that the project met all zoning requirements.
We reached out to the good folks at Grindhouse, but they had no official comment at this point because the project is still tentative. Stay tuned!

Please do this. Maybe then I won’t have to take a day off work to get through the line at Farm Burger…
Hmm, I was trying to locate all these ATL locations of Grindhouse and it turns out one is actually in Athens and the other is the airport, so not readily available to you casual diner. Also wondering if the “space” Ms. Menne says Grindhouse is contemplating is inside a school bus. Your best burger deal in Decatur remains the $5 burger before 6:00 pm at the Pinewood.
Good point. I guess most people don’t consider Athens “Atlanta. 😉
There is one on Piedmont near the Gorilla car wash?
Why do they need to build another building when there are empty buildings around.
Maybe the owner of the property is offering a deal that’s better suited to what they want to do. But whatever the reason, I hope it happens. It’s crazy having a prime, undeveloped lot that close to the square.
that entire street feels underdeveloped, but i’m guessing in 10 years time it will be unrecognizable to what it is today
That site has come full circle. The last building on that site 45+/- years ago was Burger Chef.
Surely a property of that size and that close to a MARTA station is going to be used for more than a fry pit? I like burgers as much as the next guy, but what a wasted development opportunity if they are just building a stand alone store with a parking lot. Not exactly visionary and adds nothing but fat laden calories to the community.
Because it’s not a restaurant building buildings/space.
1. Sweet auburn the original
2. morningside
3 Airport
This would be 4
The one at Sweet Auburn Market sold a while back.
Their midtown location is pretty high concept – i like it a lot. It’s also very large! I don’t know if they could have found the space on the square.
imma eat you Grindhouse
But what will happen to the school buses??????
There’s plenty of space on the Calloway property…until that redevelopment begins, that is.
Aren’t the school buses already gone and replaced by a pay lot?
Where did they go?
I believe over on Ponce near Dixie Glasshoppers.
Had no idea. Where do DHS teens go to sneak in and make out now?
I saw a cute girl/girl couple smoking cigarettes and making out in the cemetery not to long ago. But of course, I have no clue if they were actually high schoolers or not. They looked young, and weren’t dressed like most grownups. All I could think as I saw them was “MY GOD DON’T YOU PEOPLE KNOW HOW BAD CIGARETTES ARE FOR YOU!!!!!”
Not to mention bad breath. Ewww: kissing someone who smokes. Ewww.
YES!
I was under the impression the fancy burger thing had run it’s course, following the trajectory of frozen yogurt, but lagging by a couple years.
Have you seen the lines at Farm Burger? I don’t think these trends just come and then go, as in no one wants a fancy burger anymore. We’ve seen the light. We often now go fancy when we want a burger and don’t have to settle for the least common denominator. The fancy burger was a new fad and created a new market – some places will continue to win in this market segment. Some former winners may get beat by the new guys. Maybe there’s enough of a market to support multiples. How big is the segment? Looks like we are fixin’ to find out.
Allow me to re-phrase: I sort of figured we had hit “Peak Burger” a little over a year ago, and that the market had become SATURATED (burger pun, folks). I guess I was wrong. It seemed like every available space in VaHi, west midtown, and Buckhead was flipping (another one) to a burger place. Off of the top of my head the list of fancy burger joints with multiple ATL locations like the below, all since 2009ish(?).
Farm Burger
SmashBurger
BurgerFi
Flip Burger
Yeah Burger
GrindHouse
I think the other thing that has changed is our dining habits. Particularly intown. We eat local, and neighborhoods are defined by their food to a large extent. The number of fancy burger joints outside of Decatur is irrelevant to me because I stick around here to eat. And a burger is typically not worth traveling for, even a really good one, if I have one nearby. So you could list 50 new burger joints in Atlanta, but if they’ve all carved out their local market area, then they can all succeed. The question is how many can the local area support? Of course we do attract lots people from outside areas because of the critical mass of restaurants here, and that only helps. So to some extent, the more you add, the more you attract. But, granted, that isn’t the case everywhere. (Also – add Shake Shack to your list – they recently opened in Buckhead and the rumor is that there are more coming.)
I don’t give BurgerFi and SmashBurger a chance in the long run.
It’s always a coin toss to go to Farm Burger in Decatur or Yeah Burger at in VH.
I think the next thing for the gourmet burger industry is the dinning experience which I think Farm Burger lacks. Also being cost competitive (lets face it, that extra bacon is going to cost you).
Right now I don’t think its worth the investment to construct a new building for.
My gourmet burger between cupcake buns with frozen yogurt & mayo remoulade did not go over well.
YES!!!!!
Yawn. I can make four quarter-pound certified angus beef burgers with all the fixins for under five bucks at home. And if I fire up the Big Green Egg to cook them I can also throw on some jalapeno poppers and a few ears of corn as a bonus. I do not understand the fancy burger craze at all. I would go on but it’s freaking me out sounding like my dad and Mr. B…
+1
Yes sir…..I feel the same way about going out for steak
It costs a bit more, but once you try the ground chuck at Oakhurst Market you will be reluctant to go back to the supermarket meat counter.
+1.
How many bits more? I usually get the certified angus chuck at YDFM for under $4/pound (I think it was $3.69 last week) and it’s good damn good. Anything else would have to be mind-blowing to make me pay much more than that.
It’s normally north of $5 per pound. Worth it to me to avoid that cf also known as YDFM
Tend to agree that burgers (and steaks) are among the easiest things to make taste great at home if you have a grill. I rarely eat red meat anyway, but it’s definitely not something I’d want to spend much on in a restaurant.
Their menu is not that inspiring. It doesn’t say they use grass fed beef or that they have any of the farm to table offerings like Farm Burger. My favorite thing at FB is the unique salad and “snack” that is always made from seasonal ingredients. Oh, and the “gennies”. They remind me of drinking cheap beer when I would visit yankee friends up north in my younger days!
Most under rated burger is at the Brick Store. I don’t know its pedigree but it is damn good!
Long lines from Day One at the first Atlanta incarnation of Shake Shack in Buckhead.
We happened to be in Athens last night and ate at Grindhouse. It was really good and I’d love to have them in Decatur!
The Athens location has a rooftop deck. They did a killer job with the design and what it adds to that area is top notch. I could see this being even better. Would be great to have another option other than FB to walk to. Huge win for Decatur!
