Madison Avenue Soapbox Derby This Saturday
Decatur Metro | September 23, 2014 | 1:00 pmThere are a ton of events going on this coming weekend Sept 27th and 28th. Here’s the first of many: The ever-popular annual Madison Avenue Soapbox Derby on Saturday Sept. 27th! Now in its fourth year, here’s a brief summary from Patti Garrett’s blog…
10am-3pm
This unique non-motorized racing event challenges amateur racers to design and build gravity-powered soapbox cars to compete against the clock in a downhill race. Not to be confused with the National All-American Soapbox Derby, The Madison Ave. Soapbox Derby is a race for amateur drivers, which is fueled by creativity and family fun. The Rules and Regulations are not intended to hinder any creativity but rather allow for a safe race for both the drivers and spectators.

Where on Madison Ave does this take place? If I travel over to Oakhurst will it be obvious which stretch of road the race is occurring on?
The event will take place between Johnston Place & Beaty Place.
We look forward to seeing you at the event.
I would love to attend with my family as spectators. This event looks absolutely brilliant! However, we don’t live in Oakhurst, but rather two miles away towards Avondale Estates. Are we welcome? I ask because we’re new to Georgia and have noticed an unusually unwelcoming mood when we are about in neighborhoods not our own. In other words, we wouldn’t want to impose if this is an Oakhurst-only event. We love the flavor and character of each nook of this Decatur/Avondale/and everywhere-in-between area and hope to experience it all; cheers!
How would anybody know where you live? There will be lots of people there. Unless you have AE tatooed on your forehead or something nobody is going to be the wiser.
Thank you very much; sorry to generalize but compared to the UK, Americans are very outgoing and frequently ask where we live. My concerns about being viewed as dodgy come from our experience at similar events. When residents ask where we’re from we assume they overhear our Estuary English accents. Then they clarify they want to know what street or neighbourhood we live in and give us bugger all if we don’t say the proper street. However, the overwhelming majority of our experiences have been positively brilliant. Forgive our prudence as we adjust to American customs.
If you see a fellow with a faded red flatcap holding a baby, say the password “coterie” and I’ll brightly buy YOU a pint. Looking forward to the derby.
And if you DO have AE tattooed on your forehead, I intend to seek you out and buy you a beer. Y’all come.
