Waffle House Has Secured Lease in Downtown Decatur
Decatur Metro | September 19, 2014 | 9:45 amMany of you have inquired about the fate of the Waffle House, which we reported back in April, was in negotiations for the old Sammiches and Stuff space on North McDonough.
We followed up with the city, and Development Services Coordinator Catherine Lee tells us that Waffle House has indeed secured a lease on the property, however they haven’t submitted any plans for the space yet.
So stay tuned!
Keep it coming. A WH at that location will be great.
Will this be a 24 hr. location?
Yes! Finally a well-lit place where a working parent could go to get out of the house for a few evening hours and get some work done!
….unless Eddie’s Attic has a really loud show that night. I’ve never been directly downstairs from Eddie’s while shows are going in, and maybe/hopefully they’re well insulated.
A cheap way to hear the music!
The wood floor at Eddie’s is about four inches thick with a concrete subfloor. In the three years that Little Shop of Stories was in that space I heard music at Eddie’s maybe four times. And then the store had to be empty of customers to even notice.
The WH at Georgia Tech is relatively understated and fits in with the building’s architectural aesthetics. I have also heard that it is one of their most successful locations.
+1. The GT Waffle House is a great example of how WH can adapt their footprint in urban or high density buildings.
I think Georgia State’s Waffle House does pretty well too.
Actually, now that I think about it, my sometimes morning commute will be, in a way, from Waffle House to Waffle House. Both are very close to MARTA station entrances.
All waffle houses are 24 hours if they are a corporate store. If it is a franchise location, that is up to the owner.
Which is this one?
After we got married in the then “new” Courthouse in August 1983, we had our wedding breakfast (just the 2 of us plus our witness) at a Waffle House-like place where Squash Blossom is now. Anybody remember what that place was? Was it a Waffle House?
Nora Tocups, it was Huddle House.
One thought about aesthetics: I don’t mind the iconic Waffle House sign or bright lit ambience (all the better for doing work or reading). But will the outside façade be changed to neon yellow like most Waffle Houses? I understand the branding advantage but I’m not sure I’ll like the juxtaposition with Eddie’s Attic and City Hall. Kind of jarring, no? Or just part of the eclectic charm?
Hey, how did that French diacritical mark, the cédille, show up under the c of “façade”? I didn’t do anything to make that happen.
If I recall, the City was able to work with McDonald’s to successfully limit their more garish signage. Or is that another false memory of mine?
Hadn’t noticed that the McDonald’s signage wasn’t garish. But the faux plastic look isn’t my fave. I prefer the wall graffiti signage of Onyx behind the McDonald’s.
Garish is in the eye of the beholder.
The Tech Square one has a modest sign (and an awning)

Likewise, the one at Georgia State is a bit less subtle (yellow lighted letters on the building, but not the bright yellow box with the black letters) but again has a normal building exterior.
So yes – WH is quite adaptable, even if we usually think of them as generic boxes in parking lots.
Perhaps they can blend in by using teal in the palette…
Oooooo. Good one!
Mel, are you trying to press my teal button? You REALLY don’t want to get me started on another teal rant do you? That aside, I would drop my pork chop and eggs if WH would ever consider deviating from their oh-so-subtle, phone-book yellow standard scheme. Creative thinking though!
If the city, “worked” to limit or modify McDonald’s signage in some way…they failed. Hopefully they will be more thoughtful working with La Casa di waffle Pecan.
Nothing against Waffle House, but I hope Decatur folks will continue supporting locally-owned Sweet Melissa’s as well. They set up shop on the Square before it was cool to do so, and gave the Brick Store guys their chance.
Sweet Melissa’s will always remain A#1 in our family’s book. The quality of their food isn’t even comparable to Waffle House so hopefully they will not be hurt by a chain restaurant so close by. I’d think that Chick Fila might take a hit though.
“Nothing against Waffle House, but I hope Decatur folks will continue supporting locally-owned Sweet Melissa’s as well.”
Most definitely. And Pastries a Go Go too. And Thumbs Up. And Java Monkey for coffee and an egg biscuit to go.
For me, Waffle House is a wee hours kind of place, and the only time I’m likely to see hours that wee is when I’m catching the first MARTA train to head to the airport.
Decatur has long needed a place that serves breakfast ’round the clock. I’d love for Sweet Melissa’s to do that (or to stay open for dinner, at least).
I wouldn’t even put them in the same category – I think they are barely competition with each other. Very different menus, and very different damage to the wallet walking out the door.
Thumbs Up and Pastries-A-GoGo both have significant wait times if you arrive well after 9am on a weekend. I think there’s plenty of room for another breakfast place in Decatur. And WH means I can have that breakfast even outside of breakfast hours.
Best thing about Waffle House is the unfailingly cheerful efficient service. I have only been to maybe ten different WH locations in my life, but they all somehow seem to attract cheerful friendly employees who know how to keep your coffee cup filled.
WH will do well with the courthouse crowd – esp the jurors. They are going to look for something familiar. I think the local businesses will continue to draw the local customers. I agree Chik Fila has the most to lose.
You don’t know just how right you are. It will be packed with jurors every day court is in session. Court personnel, too.
I hope they have ice cream.
I hope they have Ranch dressing.
