Input Needed for Decatur Bicycle Map Update

bikemapDecatur City Commissioner Fred Boykin sends in this request…

The Decatur Bicycle Map is very popular and supplies are nearly gone. The City would like to hear from residents and map users about any changes you would like to see in the new map. So far the following updates have been noted:

  • The newest bike lanes on Commerce.
  • Adding water fountain locations.
  • Any new sharrows that were put down.
  • Also the new city limits to include Parkwood.

Your comments are welcome! Feel free to post to Decatur Metro or contact Fred Boykin. [email protected]

  1. I commute daily by bike into Midtown. I was recently discussing with someone that Decatur is falling behind Atlanta when it comes to its bicycle infrastructure.

Soon, I’ll be able to go from Piedmont Park all the way into the heart of Midtown, and from Midtown to Downtown, all on protected bike lanes. At the moment here in Decatur, it’s difficult for me to even get from Oakhurst to The Square—and I usually resort to hopping over train tracks just because it’s overall safer than crossing elsewhere.

    1. Eric – Totally agree. I ride from Decatur to Midtown and I actually feel safer once I am out of Decatur. There are too many areas of confusion. I ride S. McDonough to the PATH, which requires crossing college. Once across college on the street, I have to make a left onto the path. Cars on Howard, can turn right while I am trying to get to the PATH. Also the PATH crossing at Atlanta Ave. by the Valero station is also bad. Despite having a green light + walk signal, I have had several close encounters. The last hurdle is making the right onto Rocky Ford from the PATH. If I can avoid getting side swiped by a car turning right onto Dekalb, I am home free. All of my close calls with cars have been in Decatur.

  2. I commute to Buckhead a few days a week. I wish they continued the bike path along Marta all the way to Krog. It would be very safe to get to midtown and Piedmont Park.

  3. Trish – I like the cover too! I don’t anticipate any changes to it. Appreciate the other comments, but anyone have anything specific they think ought to added (or removed) from the map? Thanks!

    1. There is a pdf of the map at http://www.decaturga.com/biking. Also monthly updates on some rides you may want to join in on.
