Decatur Police: Updates on Crimes Committed Earlier This Month
Decatur Metro | June 23, 2014 | 12:49 pmDecatur PD just sent around this update…
The four suspects in the June 6th robbery of a 13-year-old in the 1300 block of Oakview Road have been identified and charges are pending in DeKalb County Juvenile Court. The suspects are a 14-year-old, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old from Atlanta.
The gray 2011 four door Saab 93 displaying GA tag (BEK6937) stolen during a burglary in the 300 block of Lockwood Terrace on 6-15-14 has been recovered in Atlanta and a potential suspect identified.
The red Mercedes E320 displaying GA tag (PEX 2935) stolen during a burglary in the 100 block of Bruton Street on 6-16-14 has been recovered in DeKalb County. A 14-year-old from DeKalb County was arrested.
Really glad to see these updates. Not glad to see that the perpetrators are even younger than last summer–two 14 year olds so far. That does not bode well for them or for us. The arrest of a 14 year old for the Bruton St. burglary is interesting–previously it was reported that “a maintenance worker at a neighboring house reported seeing a black female, 30-40 years old, approximately 5’7”, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans walking in the area prior to the burglary.” Either the sighting was completely coincidental (my guess) or it was one weird looking 14 year old.
Not necessarily. The 30-40 old black female may have stolen the car. The report only says a 14 yr old was arrested – it didn’t say he stole the car from the house.
True, but unfortunately the 14 year old as perpetrator fits the current crime pattern here. We’ll see, I guess.
It’s pretty much common knowledge that these kids fall victim to adults and sometimes family members. I can almost guarantee these kids will be back on the street in a few weeks if not less.
This is Oliver Twist at it’s finest.
On another note.. It’s up to us to take preventative measures, know your neighbors and the neighborhood and it’s foot traffic. CoD Police can’t be on every corner and they apparently are doing fantastic following up on these crimes.
Why not follow the trail back to the influences and prosecute them as gang leaders?
The adults that are taking advantage of theses kids are the ones who need to spend a LONG time behind bars.
Because they don’t snitch and know they will be right back out. Also hard to prove. I do think however, adults involved running crime rings with children should be severely punished no matter how petty the crime.
Good job. Thanks Decatur Police.
The best advice for victims of juvenile crime is to show up for ALL hearings! It might take a year to prosecute the case, but these juveniles, especially repeat offenders, have learned how to attempt to beat the system! When the victims don’t appear for the initial hearing and continued hearings, it allows the defense attorney the opportunity to ask the judge to dismiss the case. When victims don’t appear for the case it sends a clear message to the court that they possibly think their case is not important and don’t believe restitution can be granted! So why bother everyone’s time? I’ve gone through the process as mother to a victim of juvenile crime and I made sure we appeared for every single hearing. A year later, thankfully we received monetary restitution! The DeKalb County Juvenile Court DA expressed appreciation for our continued attendance because it allowed them to prosecute a case to the full extent! It pays to know and use your rights!
