Man Behind ‘Sweet Devil Moon’ Returns to Decatur to Manage Calle Latina

Calle Latina sent around this announcement yesterday…

If you were in Atlanta between 2001 and 2007, you may remember a Peruvian tapas lounge in Oakhurst and Midtown called Sweet Devil Moon. Ranked one of Atlanta Magazine’s Top 100 Restaurants, the lounge was featured in publications ranging from Southern Living to Zagat. The man behind the restaurant was Paul Vinces, and he now brings his knowledge of Latin American cuisine to Calle Latina in downtown Decatur.

Vinces comes to Calle Latina with a passion for food from his upbringing in Trujillo, Peru. As a child, he frequented markets with his grandmother to select fresh fruits, vegetables and fish to make succulent dishes including ceviche and conchas a la parmesana, as well as everyday dishes like arroz con pollo. He’s quick to educate those who don’t know about Peruvian cuisine, emphasizing its influences from Chinese, Japanese, German, Spanish, and Incan flavors.

Michael Condon of BaddaBing Catering opened Calle Latina last year to bring the authentic tastes of Latin American street food to Decatur. “With his deep knowledge of Latin American cuisine and passion for the restaurant business, Paul is the ideal person to manage Calle Latina and bring it to the next level,” Condon says. Vinces is most excited to expand the dinner options at Calle Latina to include dishes such as Ceviche, lomo saltado, Arroz con pollo, as well as his specialty sangria and a boutique wine list.

  1. My wife and I went there on Saturday and it was amazing. Service and food.
Going to have to figure out how to squeeze it into the rotation. Oh the problems we have….

  2. man, I miss Sweet Devil Moon — not only was the food good but it deserves credit for helping to start the momentum that’s made Oakhurst become what it is today

  3. This place has been great the few times I’ve visited. I think they’re just too under the radar in Decatur’s food scene at the moment. Hopefully their new chef will help change that.

    1. Was it $2 mojitos that they used to do on Sun. afternoons? I remember (well, sort of remember) leaving there with a very large bill for such inexpensive drinks. Mmmm, they were yummy!

  4. love Calle Latina but they’ve got to get more regular with their hours. tried to go a few times in December and they were closed, possibly because they had catering jobs. hopefully new management can prevent that in the future.

  5. Brad – just beer, wine and sangria for now but we did our best to lobby Paul for a return of the pisco sours in the future. The food was amazing and the new menu was very reminiscent of the old Sweet Devil Moon but even better.
