Probably Lullwater. It’s the place I most frequently visit.
But I’ll always remember the first time I noticed Woodlands. I was sitting in a hot car. Waiting for the light to change. Something was blooming over on my right so I took a look. Although I’d passed it a thousand times it was the first time I’d realized the expanse of it.
The Olmstead linear parks on Ponce are just gorgeous. Ponce is such a nightmare, but I’ll drive it occasionally just for the parks. Thank you to all who have participated in their rebirth!
Back when it was cooler out, I walked a good stretch of these parks, starting from the Plaza theater and continuing to Azalea Park, then finally home to downtown Decatur. About 3 miles (I’m trying to lose some weight). I really enjoyed it. The linear parks are one of the more unique aspects of Atlanta.
Might do this walk in the other direction when the weather is cool again and I want to see an early movie at the Plaza.
I do this all the time to L5P. Scott to Deepdene, cross over Ponce into Dellwood, then take Clifton up to Clifton Terrace and hook up to the Stone Mountain path across the south edge of the golf course and up to Euclid. If I drink too much to walk back home from Brewhouse or Yacht Club, I can get a cab if the wife is not with me and not thrilled about coming to pick me up. Maybe I’ll see you out there!
I’ve thought of walking to Porter or Wrecking Bar before along a similar route. Given where I live and that I have an unlimited MARTA pass, it’s so tempting just to jump on the train from Decatur then walk from Inman Park. But I guess I would do well to pre-walk-off some of those high gravity beers.
The newly evolving series of parks that lie between Memorial and MLK, between the Downtown Connector and the west end of Oakland Cemetery.
Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in Medlock neighborhood
Hidden Cove Park in Westchester neighborhood
I’m not telling. That’s like giving up your favorite fishing hole.
It would be my backyard, if not for all those darn trees blocking my sunshine.
I hate to reveal this, but I will
There is a wonderful old forest south of Kittredge Park that few know about – it is land given to Dekalb some ago and largely left untouched until recently (google maps shows it as the Elwyn John Wildlife Sanctuary, but I’ve never seen that name used except on maps). The local neighbors, the county, and Friends of Kittredge Park have been putting trails in over the past year. Smack dab in the middle of Toco Hills, and few know it is there. Park behind the stadium and just follow the trails into the woods.
stadium?
I think he means Adams Stadium.
Yes. Adams stadium.
East Lake Golf Club.
I just got a new driver. When can you squeeze me into one of your foursomes?
What happened to your old driver? Did he/she complain about schlepping you to and from Trackside?
This time of year, Venetian Pools.
+1
…and Hidden Cove Park – the dawg’s favorite place to take me on my morning walk.
The patio at Leon’s. Seriously, as much I love to get out and walk some trails, once it gets muggy and buggy I’m mostly done with the outdoor stuff until Fall.
Co-sign your last sentence 100%!
It really is a “pocket park,” but I’m fond of Walter’s Woods in Forrest Hills (along North Carter), along with the adjacent space that is a little less developed and named… something different. Not a destination, but if you’re walking in the neighborhood it’s worth visiting.
Fernbank Forest– and I really hope Fernbank re-opens it soon!
Henderson Park!
Deepdene park on Ponce is worth a couple of hours or more. We play ball or practice skating in the circle. Then walk the dog in the wood. We found tadpoles and frogs last spring. My son fished out a 50 year old coke bottle out of the creek. Its a collectable. the city built beautiful bridges over the creek.
Yellow River, Sweetwater Creek, Panola Mountain, and even stone Mountain are lots of fun with the kids. Easy and very outdoors.
One of my favorite parks in Atlanta is Whittier Mill Park. It’s never crowded (err…hopefully this doesn’t change that, haha). I guess not too many people outside of the immediate neighborhoods are even aware of this park’s existence. It’s a great park with a huge open field with nice grass. There’s also a nice sized playground and beautiful mill ruins to explore.
Georgia Perimeter College Native Garden. Wonderful gardens in sun and shade.
There’s a nice picnic table and its a short drive from Decatur, or bicycle via Flat Shoals Rd.
