  1. Given the reports of mud-slinging on the other thread, seems like a good idea to attend this and judge the candidates in person. Not thrilled with their campaigns.

    1. Agree that the best thing is to attend this forum and any other opportunity to hear the candidates speak for themselves.

I don’t think these two differ much on the big issues. Both have strong records of community involvement . Seem to be grasping at small details to exploit in order to differentiate themselves.

This district has been held by Democrats for years. Winner of this primary will be heavily favored to win the seat in November. I guess that is why we’re seeing the unpleasant campaign tactics.

I don’t care for it though….I miss Jason Carter already………

      1. “I don’t care for it though….I miss Jason Carter already………”

        Guns Everywhere and all?

        1. All about running for statewide office. Don’t care for that either.

I do feel Jason Carter was a good state senator. Wish he could have served a few more terms before being pressed into service for higher office.

  2. Only one of the candidates has slung mud. It’s easy to think that a campaign has “gone negative,'” but in this case, Elena has remained positive. Kyle’s negativity was unexpected, and is bizarre, in in my opinion.

    1. I understand that some might take umbrage with the poor photoshopping on the recent mailing, but should questioning an incumbent candidate’s voting record be considered “going negative?” If Ms. Parent cast votes that seem antithetical to typical liberal sensibilities, doesn’t her opponent have a responsibility to highlight and question those votes?

      1. Sure, but the opponent has the responsibility to question that in the appropriate forum – like the one upcoming at ASC. I never saw the mailer, but my guess is it’ll probably hurt him at the ballot box.

  3. It’s not the photoshopping. It’s the complete distortion of Elena’s votes. She was and is extremely progressive, and she voted with the Democratic Caucus. Ask any of the Democratic representatives.

    1. As far as I can tell nothing in the mailer wasn’t true. She did cast those votes cutting HOPE scholarships, reducing early voting and privatizing water. I believe our current Senator voted the opposite way on all 3 of these bills. Seems like a legitimate issue to me.

      1. As far as I can tell, nothing was factually wrong in the Willie Horton ad either. That’s just not the test of appropriateness that I would hope my representatives would shoot for.

        1. So he doesn’t get a pass from you, but you haven’t seen the ad? And then compare it to a notorious case of modern day race baiting sight unseen? Anything to win the argument, I guess.

          1. I had seen the ad by the time I wrote that comment. Someone was nice enough to email it to me. Why would you assume that I hadn’t? Anything to win the argument, eh?

And I did not compare anything, you did. I was responding to a comment about there being nothing untrue in it. I merely pointed out that the literal, factual truth is a pretty low bar to set.

But if you want to get into it, then yes, I would be willing to lay claim to this small victory…

          2. Pretty sure the point is that we don’t want mud slinging of any kind going on. Flyers, TV commercials, and robo calls are the worst form of political campaigning, especially when they are purposely putting down the opponent. That’s what’s wrong with politics.

  4. If we got the mailer that everybody is up in arms about, it got thrown out before I saw it. Does anyone have a copy they can post here or email to me?

  5. So, anybody attend the forum and have a report? Or is a video of it posted somewhere? Sorta curious, as I don’t see an obvious and compelling reason yet to prefer either candidate.

    2. Ah, I see that Decaturish has posted a video: http://www.decaturish.com/2014/05/video-parent-williams-make-their-case/

  6. I went, but had to leave at 8:15 to pick up kids. Here’s a link from the DeKalb Young Democrats (they hosted the event):

  7. Kyle Williams’ claims about Elena Parent slashing HOPE Scholarship are evaluated in today’s AJC Truth-O-Meter. (5/13/14, front page of metro section)

The article has a thorough discussion of the details of Parent’s voting record on this issue.

    Williams gets a “False” rating.
