DeKalb Avenue May Have Closed Again After Briefly Reopening

Update – residents reporting that DeKalb Ave is still closed.

Lots of area residents got stuck trying to get to/from downtown Atlanta yesterday. This morning, the AJC has a pretty extensive report – and photos! – of the water main break that closed DeKalb Ave…

A major northeast Atlanta thoroughfare reopened Thursday night after a predawn water main break flooded the roadway.

The break, near the intersection of DeKalb Avenue and Elmira Place, was reported just before 6 a.m. Emergency repairs were completed around 8 p.m. and water service was restored.

But it’s not all over yet.

Crews will continue to repair the street Friday, resulting in single lane closures, authorities said.

  1. …and at least part of Friday morning. Also, does it usually take more than 24 hours to repair a water break? Just curious.

  2. And, this morning there are reports of another water main busted at Lawrenceville Hwy and Hugh Howell (where the left turn is at Chick-Fil-A).

  3. Latest report was that there is another leak, so they have to fix that before paving. UGH! As long as they get it done before Monday’s drive to work. (fingers crossed)

  4. I just went through there. It is completely closed in both directions and there was no traffic direction. Just a hundred + cars all trying to turn around at the same time to find a different route. I would avoid that road like the plague until you hear otherwise.

    1. I recommend going left on Whitefoord, then right on LaFrance to cut through to Mooreland– not too backed up about half an hour ago.

        1. I never leave home or work without quickly glancing at DM to make sure no one’s reported a major traffic or other local disaster. Seriously. It only takes 2 seconds to glance at the thread titles to see whether there’s something hot among the “Eye on the Street” and “Best XXX for the money” threads.

  5. Still closed as of 5PM. Eastbound closed at Moreland, west at Fox Bros. Plan accordingly.
