  1. Apparently part of the 5 Points makeover was getting rid of the vendors that Mayor Reed didn’t like because, according to him, they looked like a “swap meet.”

  2. I could complain that the Medline LCI event misuses the term “charrette” but I’d rather keep it positive today. Glad to see some proactive (rather than reactive) efforts underway. Better places never emerge from stupid battles over berms, setbacks and parking counts. They require a shared vision, and that comes from collaboration and compromise.

    1. Let’s definitely focus on all the positive energy that’s being sparked by bringing everyone– residents, businesses, County and other government, transit agencies and safety advocacy groups– together to work side-by-side on the same goals! It’s been a really cool process so far. There’s still time for folks to sign up to participate, and the online survey will be open until it starts (see article for links). I sure hope CoD residents in the NE quadrant will make the most of these opportunities to help shape the long range plans for our immediate vicinity.

      From the email sent out to the core team by Jen Price of Sycamore Consulting:

      “It’s a pretty packed day, but we hope it will be interactive, engaging and fun for those who will participate. We are encouraging people to commit to the whole day, however, if you cannot, we hope that you’ll be able to drop by at some point during the charrette.”

      The schedule:

      9:30 – 10:00 AM :: Registration, light breakfast & open house

      10:00 – 10:30 AM :: Welcome, overview & purpose

      10:45 – 11:15 AM :: Visit tactical demos (weather permitting, this will involve a short walk from Patel Plaza, south along Church Street to the adjacent vacant car dealership to view a few scaled greenspace ideas, crosswalk treatments, etc. )

      11:30 – 12:15 PM :: Virtual study area tours -we’ve divided the study area into 3 districts. When we return to Masala, we’ll show a video tour of the 3 districts to provide more context.

      12:30 – 4:00 PM :: Working lunch & charrette – attendees will select 1 of the 3 districts to study. At their study table, they’ll discuss and sketch ideas for transportation, land use, and greenspace solutions for their district. At the end, each table will report their draft solutions.

      4:00 – 4:30 PM :: Next Steps & Wrap up.

    2. WOW. Seeing the YDFM plan in scale to the Suburban Plaza and Fuqua Phase I plans?? M-A-S-S-I-V-E. Like, you can fit 3 sets of the combined Selig/Fuqua plans in the area of the YDFM one!!

  3. The patron saint of firefighters is Saint Florian in case you are feeling the urge to pray for their safety.

    1. I love patron saints. Anyone know who is the patron saint of working minivan Moms with disorganized teens?
