What’s Open? Thursday Open Thread
Decatur Metro | January 30, 2014 | 8:51 amSchools are still closed, but the City of Decatur is opening at noon and it seems like many more businesses will be open today, based my totally random observations.
Use this thread to report delayed openings and closings of businesses/government functions.
Gwyneth?
Does anyone know if Leapin Lizards will be open today? Day 2+ of being snowed in with two toddler boys is about to be more than I can take…..
When do they usually open? I can go look.
10:00
There are 3 cars in the lot. 2 are definitely associated with the bootcamp. None of the inflatables are blown up. No sign on the door. Maybe call in a while, but it doesn’t look good for bouncing today.
Leaping lizards is open
A friend just called from there – open and not crowded yet. See you all in a few!!!!
Yep. Open and getting crowded. Kids had fun. Thanks Leapin Lizards! I appreciate you opening more than you know.

Good one.
Received an email from someone who went by Baby Kroger and said it was fully stocked.
I am trying to find out if DeKalb County Sanitation will be picking up recycling today. Does anyone know>
City Commission Fred Boykin sent a note to our list serves (Great Lakes & Lamont/Vidal) saying to leave recycling bins out as they start back up where they left off when they stopped on Tuesday.
Thanks, TIffany. I am wondering about DeKalb County rather than only City of Decatur.
I believe recycling will be picked up tomorrow, if I’m remembering the press conference correctly.
You could probably check DeKalb County’s website.

So Mojo’s is just going to take OM’s dinners and put it on their pizzas? Not a bad idea…
Ha ha. Sorry bad cut and paste there, huh?
Mojo tweet : We’ll be open at noon today. Give the roads a chance to melt and us a chance to restock from yesterday. See you all for lunch!
My husband is from New Zealand and we get our kids down there pretty regularly. One thing I cannot get used to is the fact that they actually have pizzas with f’d up ingredients like potatoes and mayo and mustard and beets and apricots. Most sauce is more BBQ than traditional red. It is like they took a regular old dinner and threw it on a pizza.
https://hellpizza.com/nz/order/44
The local Dominoes does the apricot pizza.
tuna and corn was the very popular pizza topping combo that I just could not understand during my college year in England- still don’t!
LOL! Same here–we once ordered a “veggie pizza”, & it arrived with corn and onions, nothing else. Prawn salad sandwiches were also popular in the vending machines & Pret A Manger. I love prawn salad, but not on soggy thin white bread…
What about the YMCA-anyone know?
You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel…
I am sadly old enough to appreciate your answer in stride-and HA!
With the construction workers, if we can get an Indian chief we will be close to the full ensemble.
Their facebook page says opening at noon. Unfortunately, with the renovations going on, I’m not sure that you can do any of the things Rick Julian said you could. Especially the “whatever you feel” part, but that really has nothing to do with the renovations.
Yeah, obviously I meant the DDY on Clairemont. Don’t know about East Lake. It’s full of ‘Khursters and even non-real-Decatur people. Blech.
I don’t believe the “whatever you feel” portion of Y possibilities has ever been officially sanctioned.
clearly you people aren’t connoisseurs of vintage Village People
Oh, I knew exactly what you were referring to. My dad was in the Navy!
that’s the spirit!
I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to kill both of you for those earworms. GAHHH!
They keep putting me on a list.
How about the East Lake Y?
Suburban Lanes, anyone?
They’re open, and probably slammed.
Noodle is open normal hours today
Any comments on road conditions on Briarcliff Rd?
Piece of Cake tweet : All Piece of Cake locations will be opening at noon today….Stay safe everyone!
Chai Pani tweet : Return to civilization with saag paneer or butter chicken thalis. Chole bhatura also on deck.

Taj Ma-Hound tweet : We’re sorry to say that we are cancelling tonight’s Ice Cream Social, but the good news is that you can join us…

Burnt Fork?
Saigon Cafe at North Decatur and Clairmont is open!
Steinbeck’s is open. U-Joint is too I’m sure. They never close.
Eye Physicians and Surgeons on Scott Blvd. is now open but I’d call first because any particular staff person could still be out.
East Lake Y closed all day according to the email I just got.
Tough on us mermaids–DDY is open but the pool is being remodeled; East Lake Y pool is open but the facility is closed!
Anyone know the status of mail delivery today?
PS Fellini’s is open and I know this because my husband just went to pick up our lunch there.
Glennwood Estates mailman delivering late morning today.
We received mail today at our Brookhaven office. I also saw several USPS trucks on the road.
Just saw the mail truck in Lenox Place
Fabulous. Thanks all!
Just had an awesome luch at Big Tex. I think their food has gotten much better!
Just returned from Baby Kroger. Everything well stocked unless you want white bread. Some varieties of milk a little low.
Melton’s is open!
Pallookaville is open but their ice cream freezer went down so no sriracha milkshakes.
any word on Friday school?
Looks like everyone has called it but us so far. APS, Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb, Clayton, Marietta etc.
I REALLY hope we do what’s best for our small hamlet and let the kids go to school. I’ve done some driving around and things look pretty good. I know teachers have to get here as well, but I’m sure they’re calling them to make sure enough can get here safely.
This comment has been bothering me for a while. Why is it best? Because it is best for you? There is no heat at Oakhurst, most teachers don’t live in Decatur (in fact, one of my daughter’s teachers lives in Marietta, where a lot of hilly side streets are ice coated still), and ice is expected to re form over night in many areas. What is best for MY child is not to be warehoused in a building with no heat and a good portion of staff missing because they could not get child care or make it in safely. I rather the school take a look at the broader picture and make a decision rather than a bunch of overreacting parents. I don’t trust Phyllis Edwards on a lot of things, but this one I hand to them. You think they WANT to close school?
+1
+1000 the school is not a babysitting service
we were just at Fellini’s on McLendon, and while the streets are mostly clear, where they’ve been protected by shade they’re still quite icy. across the street at Dr. Bombays, the sidewalk was practically sheeted in ice and dangerous—there really ought to be a law about retailers clearing their sidewalks.
I’m 60/40 in favor of closing on Friday because of the meaningful number of ice patches that will still be on the road in the morning. It will all be gone by afternoon, but dems de breaks.
Not surprising really, considering the ordeal many parents, teachers, and students went through this week. Lots of abandoned vehicles (and ice) still on the roads, too.
I want them to do what is best for the safety of the employees and our kids – and I would love for them to make the call soon so I can figure out a backup plan pronto!
+1,000
FYI – no one calls staff to check before closing schools
Isn’t our school system small enough that there could be a phone tree or something? I like thinking that Suzanne Kennedy is personally calling each staff member at CHELC to make sure they made it home safely, don’t need anything, and are ok to drive back to work.
NO SCHOOL AGAIN!
Roborama: no school on Friday.
i fear for the few hairs that remain on my head.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! How could they call off school!! The roads are totally clear!!!!!!!!!!!!
Schools closed again? This is CRAZY!!! I’ve been driving around with the kid running errands all day. What an overreaction from CSD.
Roads are not clear in the ‘burbs and most metro systems are closed. Think about what that means since most teachers don’t live Decatur.
Spend much time in the burbs this afternoon did ya?
No, but I actually know people who live in Cobb, north DeKalb and Fulton. I was hearing from them about the conditions in their neighborhoods.
Not an over reaction when you consider refreezing and the number of faculty and staff who commute. School is not a babysitting service. Would your child benefit from being in class with no heat and a school full of subs? Already have staff who weren’t able to make it home Tues. bc they stayed to work a full day despite the weather and traffic conditions.
I don’t think it’s because of roads. I bet it’s because Atlanta PS and Dekalb PS are closed, so many teachers (who have kids in these systems) may have to find subs.
That Oakhurst ES does not have heat should not be relevant- you don’t shut down a whole system because one school has facility issues. If anything, delay opening for that school until you can fix it or close that school altogether.
I’m setting an arbitrary rule of no wearing shorts or flip flops on snow days.
What about Saturday School for DHS?
Don’t know but that’s an idea. Saturday School for DHS students for the rest of the year? There’s a lot of material in AP and IB classes to master before the final tests/assessments. Five days of school missed in one month is a substantial handicap for most students. There’s whiz kids for whom it won’t matter but most of our kids are bright, not speed readers with photographic memories and analytic sophistication.
Lots of athletics already scheduled on Saturdays. How about going to school that week in Feb instead?
Oh I hope not. Big trip already planned, tickets bought. I’m okay with going later in the summer, but I don’t see how that helps with preparing for the standardized tests.
There’s often DHS trips going on during February break, e.g. to Spain or D.C., college fairs, juniors are often traveling to visit colleges, seniors are looking at the schools to which they’ve been admitted. Ditto for the April break. Unrefundable airline tickets have been bought way in advance. Not mention bonafide family vacations. It’s a toughie, making up missed days in high school.
Since there is no heat at Oakhurst I’m glad that my kids aren’t expected to be there tomorrow!
Since when?!
It was on the CSD facebook page
From Kristen Thornton-Webb, director of Science is Fun Camp:
