Decatur Decked Out for Three Taverns Craft Beers Launch
Decatur Metro | July 18, 2013Call it good marketing or virual buzz, but tomorrow’s launch of Three Taverns Brewery’s first two brews around Decatur is certainly noticeable. I can’t remember the last time a business used the city lampposts to advertise anything, can you?
In addition to these new signs, of which there are 10 around Decatur according to Three Taverns Facebook page, there’s another AJC feature up in the past day (yes, it’s behind the paywall), which features this “beer pick” description of their “A Night In Brussels IPA”…
Profile: Originally brewed with Citra hops, the latest version of this Belgian-style American IPA features the Falconer’s Flight blend, which includes Citra, Simcoe, Sorachi Ace and other American hop varieties. The result is a lovely expression of tropical, citrus and floral notes married with a soft malt presence and the spicy, fruity tones of Belgian yeast.
Pair with: Try this clean, bright, aromatic beer with rare roast beef, spicy Asian dishes or a shrimp or oyster Po Boy.
The launch is certainly big for Decatur, who’s latest Strategic Plan includes the encouragement of “light industrial” businesses in the city’s eastside industrial area. Three Taverns is the largest effort yet since the ink dried in on that plan and one can assume that the city is hoping they will attract even more “light industrial” businesses to the area in the near future.
One way Decatur can piggyback onto this kind of thing is by developing something along the lines of what’s happening at the Krog Street Market in the old Tyler Perry studios in the Old 4th Ward. Check out John Kessler’s piece in today’s Food & More, AJC. There will be a couple of celeb chefs with fairly large restaurants and Spotted Trotter is moving there. I guess it’s unlikely for it to happen, though, with the gargantuan Ponce Market looming over this side of town.
My last sentence was not clear. I meant that it would be unlikely for something like the Krog Street Market to happen in Decatur because of Decatur’s semi-proximity to the Ponce Market.
It’s interesting how much of Atlanta’s new development is near the Beltline.
On another related subject, is the Meehan’s announced for the old Maddy’s location still on the books? I haven’t heard anything about that in ages.
I’d say the concentrations of fabulous food businesses in the core of Decatur is already resembling those markets. And isn’t Krog Street Market closer to us than Ponce Market, or is my perception just off?
Ponce Market is about half a mile closer to Decatur than Krog. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Decatur is becoming a foodie heaven, restaurant-wise, but I think it could use a market type space for gourmet goodies. It would be nice to have places like Sawicki’s and Cakes & Ale’s Bakery concentrated in one area. Maybe we could steal Pine Street Market and Sweet & Sinful away from AE, and I think a great cheese shop would be fantastic. I once spent about half a day in the Ferry Building in San Francisco and I’m hoping that we’ll get a similar experience from the Ponce Market, but it would be nice to get a mini-version of that experience right here in Decatur.
Yes for awesome cheese shop! Like at Star Provisions.
Those are attractive banners. Does this kind of banner advertising create revenue for the city, or is it done in concert with a business in order to benefit both city and business?
This is great news and I’m excited to try out the place! Awesome addition to the neighborhood. However, with the increased traffic that will for sure happen on New St and College there is great need for a light at that intersection. We have been taking our dog to daycare on that street for years and it seems it gets more difficult to exit New St each month! Who would we need to contact to get the wheels moving on the possibility?
Three taverns is not legally able to sell beer from their brewery location, so you won’t see an impact on traffic to their brewery. However, they do have plans to set up a tasting room… I hope their beer is as good as their graphic art!
Lovely signs. Will the lamp posts be available to any business-Pink Pony? Hooter’s? Magic City?
Wal-Mart?
Likely. Unless their use is managed by the DDA and allowed by businesses in a limited area. But I think the DDA’s boundary includes the entire city limits. But you could probably restrict it to businesses inside the city.
Maybe the DBA pays for them. Good idea anyway.
Where can you pick this beer up?
I would check area growler stores first.
I’m planning to visit the Brick Store Pub to sample …
Or Brick Store tomorrow but you’ll have to take a seat to enjoy it.
I wanted to reply to the question about who can use our lamp posts for banners. We look at these requests on a case by case basis. We allowed Nalley to install banners for their Arbor Day event and the Book Festival and Arts Festival installed banners in the past. In this instance, we are celebrating a new, local business who asked if they could use the lamp posts to identify other local businesses who are carrying their product on the day they launch. They are paying a rental fee for the use of the street lamps by way of a donation to the Decatur Youth Fund which helps provide scholarships for after school, summer camps and enrichment programs offered through Decatur Active Living and Decatur Children and Youth Services. We also reviewed the artwork before approving the request.
To clarify, the cost of the banners and their installation was also covered by the local business.
“we are celebrating a new, local business who asked if they could use the lamp posts to identify other local businesses who are carrying their product on the day they launch.”
So in other words, are these banners appearing on lampposts adjacent to establishments that will actually have the new brews (in the case of the photo above that would appear to be The Marlay)? If so, that is very clever and functional.
