Celebrating on a Rained Out July 4th
Decatur Metro | July 4, 2013Decatur’s fireworks have been pushed back to September. Avondale has rescheduled for late August.
And we aren’t alone. It seems like most 4th of July parades and fireworks up and down the eastern seaboard have been cancelled today due to nasty weather and flooding. So folks all over the U.S. are likely scrambling to schedule alternative plans to celebrate our country’s independence from ol’ King George.
All of this to ask the question “What indoor activities are you planning on today?”
On the DVR: Inspector Lewis.
Watching movies on Netflix. Having a glass of sangria later on.
Getting ready to bake cookies.
Ditto
Taking the little one to a movie!
+50–lots of Decaturites at N Dekalb 16 Thursday afternoon.
Captain America on Amazon Prime. Making peach cobbler to take to dinner friends. And a nap.
So far: sleeping late and laundry and getting wet. All in red, white, and blue! Soon will make food to share with friends.
Ton of flooding on Scott right now! Be careful out there.
Firing up the (indoor) grill to cook (veggie) burgers… later will watch the fireworks (on tv) and probably have a couple of beers (real beers anyway, Bells Two Hearted).
I’m also turning to the Bells Two Hearted. Or should I say “already turned”?
I wish Bells would start selling it in the can. Though obviously not an issue today, I could take cans to the pool. Also, the cans are easier to dispose of.
Speaking of cans, has anyone tried the new Terrapin in a can? I believe it’s called Recreation Ale? (Screw you Internet, I’m not looking it up!) Any good?
Tried it at the Beer in the Garden fundraiser at the Oakhurst Community Garden a few weeks ago. It’s pretty good and had a nice flavor, considering it is only something like 4.5%. It’s their sessionable beer. Will be added to the rotation in the fridge.
Agreed. It was a highlight of the Beer Garden event. Among many.
This evening will be spent at the movies, but this morning was spent watching “Woodstock: Three Days of Peace & Love”–I hadn’t seen it in a few years. It was a sharp reminder of just how influential that era was, and continues to be, on our society today (politically, musically, culturally, even in the fashions worn that people still wear now). Yes, I know it wasn’t all moonlight & roses–it was muddy, dirty, crowded, and the promoters had vastly underestimated how many people would show up. But it was also amazing because a half-million people came together without rioting, pushing, shoving, or trampling everyone else to share the scant resources that were available there, and afterwards, people volunteered to stay behind & clean up, for no pay. I don’t know that this could happen nowadays. We could all use a little Woodstock in our lives!
Through varying instances of serendipity, my wife’s uncle now owns the Woodstock site and one of her other uncles, since deceased, shot a lot of the helicopter footage from the film. Stories abound up there, as does — at least in part — the vibe. A surprising number of the Boomers who attended ended up hanging around permanently so there’s probably more at-heart hippies per capita there than anywhere else on earth (except maybe San Francisco).
Coolest. Anecdote. Ever.
Bowling, Leapin Lizards and a movie!
Drinking and satan worshiping. Thanks for giving me the idea Mr. B!
+1
Oh Miss Mary! Surely you jest? Not Sa-TINNNN!
My folks and I just came back from enjoying BBQ and deep fried apple pies with homemade vanilla ice cream at Burnt Fork. Happy 4th, everyone!
Sleeping in, laundry, grocery, cooking and enjoying good company. The rain has forced us to slow down and enjoy each other’s company – for the day at least.
Budweiser, Cheetos, Dinty Moore, and a Clutch Cargo marathon.
Leon’s for lunch and enjoyed a Dark and Stormy which they discount if it’s raining outside!
$5!
Right! What a deal…and darn tasty.
Have also been giving special attention to one of my dogs today, Liberty (Libby). She turned nine and is a fourth of July baby. President Ford also had a Golden Retriever in the White House named Liberty.
Seinfeld DVD marathon…
Working. Oh well, someone’s got to do it!
It’s a great night at Turner Field. If you are under the shelter. Rainy baseball!
Cleaned child’s room for three hours, grilled between downpours, scrubbed all my pans, watching fireworks on tv. Drinking whatever my honey gives me.
Worked all day – one to hospice, one to the morgue, a few others struggling to last a little while longer. be grateful, my friends.
