A huge kudos to Katie Hayes and the new directors of the Decatur Farmer’s Market! The number and quality of the vendors continues to grow, as does the variety of products you can find that are simply outstanding. If you have never had Pearson’s peaches, Darby Farms chicken, or any of the other fantastic options available you don’t know what you are missing. Super nice folks doing great things for local food.
Decatur is a city that deserves a first rate farmer’s market, so please support these folks to help it grow even bigger and better.
Disclaimer: The author of this post has absolutely no personal, financial, or other relationship with the market, any of the vendors, or anything else that may lead people to suspect I am shilling. I just really like good, local food!
Yes! Agree! I’m addicted to the expanded market. It’s impacting my social life–I can’t do anything else Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Thanks to the folks who originated this market and thanks to those who are making it even better. The only problem is cost but my solution is to buy only what I know we’re eating that night. Plus I say things like “If you take that radish, you must eat the whole thing. It cost me $6.” And I love, love, love, love peach season. May it last forever.
Fresh picked Ga peaches and homegrown tomatoes may be the best two foods on earth! :0)
Somebody recently recommended a good place to board a cat during a move. Would you mind repeating, please? THanks!!
We used Camp Kitty last year while we were having our hardwoods redone and the fam went to the beach. We really liked them a lot and our 15-year-old did well. They interact with the cats every day. It’s located on North Decatur, just past the DeKalb Industrial Way Kroger, on the left.
Thanks! I have a 17-yr old that’s been increasingly dependent on me since we lost our beloved doggie a couple of years ago. We have a move coming up and then I hope to get away to the beach before end of summer. So need to find the right place. (Is it neurotic to feel guilty about leaving the cat and going off to the beach, even though I haven’t had a vac in two years?)
Is it neurotic? Yes. The first step is recognizing it. Not that I’m judging, since it takes one to know one, as they say.
Plan on finally trying Calle Latina for lunch today. Any recommendations for a pescetarian?
Not sure about the pesce- part, but do some kind of arepa–it’s a signature item. If they have the warm rice pudding and you like both rice pudding and coconut, don’t miss it.
Had lunch there yesterday for the first time. +1 on the arepa (mine was Cuban), and my lunchmate loved the camarones (shrimp) taco.
Yes! Finally, a food question I can’t really answer. I hate fish. My mother is a fish.
I do, however, love Calle Latina. The arepas are great. The empanadas are great (and you actually get two small/medium empanadas with each order, so you can either get two of the same or try two different ones). I don’t really like the idea of charging $2 extra for the side of habanero mango slaw but I’m finally learning that I can’t always get what I want. I pay the extra $2. You should too (yes, I know what YOU should do!)
Well, this has made me hungry. I think I know where I’m going for lunch now…
I cannot remember WHAT I ate, but as a pesce I found plenty of choices and it was all delicious. I do remember that the side of rice and beans for ~$2 was veg, delicious, and a pretty large serving. Also that the delicious looking tea was sweetened and so, alas, not my cup.
Do you know how great it is to see a thread for pescetarians? Ah! Today, I do not feel like the gastronomic equivalent of a unicorn.
Thoughts on Calle Latina : Had the shrimp arepa and beans and rice. Very good if a bit pricy for lunch at 11 bucks. Lighter eaters could probably get by with just the arepa. Quick service at11:30. Next time I’ll try the empanadas. Now if I can just talk wife into Hola for dinner…
Someone needs to stand up for the fishes. Pescacide rates rise unabated the more we hear about red meat.
We went to Hola for dinner last night and once again it was outstanding. The service was great, the carnitas and carne asada tacos were outstanding, and the patio is very comfortable. For the hypercritics out there, they have added 5 huge square umbrellas that effectively form a temporary shade on hot days, totally removable for evenings and cooler weather.
Noodle is also doing some work on their patio and it looks like it will be really cool as well.
What seems to be developing is a bit of a strip of sidewalk cafe culture there from Leon’s to Noodle. I can envision that area being a Euro style nightlife scene – and it could extend to Cafe Alsace and around the corner to Brickstore, Colbeh, and connect to the existing sidewalk scene from Mac MacGees down to Cakes and Ale.
We’ve got a pretty cool town here. I can’t even imagine living anywhere else.
+1. There really isn’t anywhere else like it in metro Atlanta, maybe the state.
Add the patio at Victory Sandwich Bar to the mix. Great to see so much pedestrianism along Church Street at 9:30 on a weeknight after the Temple Grandin show at First Baptist.
The patio at Victory is a good addition. So is the patio at Sapori di Napoli!
Not only the Victory patio, but now on the other side of the building they have strung lights and put tables in the alley for Paper Plane so you can walk right through that to the outdoor dining of Raging Burrito.
Recently went to Paper Plane and thought it was awesome. Dark bar and dark liquor does the trick every time.
Yup…and their kitchen is nothing to sneeze at. Our food has been top notch.
We had Hola today for the first time and thought it was great. Carne Asada = yum. The waitress told my Mr. that he had beautiful eyes, “like Paul Newman,” so of course he immediately thought the service was outstanding.
Friday for me turned out to be the day of trying new Decatur places. I had Calle Latina for lunch as I previously mentioned. We went to Hola for dinner last night. Great food (had the seafood burrito special), great (if overly-attentive) service, not-so-great margarita (too light on the tequila). The patio was perfect once the sun dipped below the tree-line around 7:30.
Then we ventured over to Paper Plane, where I thoroughly enjoyed maybe the greatest cocktail I’ve ever had, the bourbon-based Summertime Clothes they’re featuring right now. Sat outside and almost felt like we were in Europe. Can’t wait to try the food sometime.
Oh yes thoroughly enjoyed Calle Latina as well. Definitely want to try more things on their menu. You can do the tacos a la carte at Hola so we did a try tilapia taco, but I’ll be going back for the carne asada for sure.
A problem to which we might aspire…
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/21/world/europe/a-sea-of-bikes-swamps-amsterdam-a-city-fond-of-pedaling.html?hp&_r=0
I saw that too. I love that NY is concerned about Amsterdam’s bike problem. I am concerned about NY’s car problem …
Maybe the Dutch need some of these…
If only the water table wasn’t just a couple of feet underground in Amsterdam.
True. So there’s this…
http://www.amusingplanet.com/2013/02/robotic-bicycle-parking-tower-in-czech.html
Here, everybody’s pedals would melt during the day, but probably works better in northern Europe.
Any thoughts on Mar? We were planning to go there on Saturday, but some friends of ours said that it wasn’t very good. It has an identity crisis – tacos and seafood with the entrees being too expensive.
On the sidewalk cafe culture, wouldn’t it be cool if they shut down Ponce between Church & Clairmont at least on the weekends / evenings? That would really give it a true sidewalk culture. Enjoyed having that part of town closed down for the Beach Party.
The fried oyster appetizer was great and we all liked our tacos. Not as enamored of the salsa, gazpacho, and salmon appetizer. Not a kiddie place.
We went a couple of weeks ago, and the scallops and the ceviche were both awesome. My partner had a truly excellent mojito. We thought the food was great, though they were still working out service kinks since they had just opened.
I’ve been there twice. The ceviche mar is amazing, as is the sopa de mar. Good cocktails and friendly service. (As others have said, they’re working out a few kinks.)
I’ve been twice and everything at the table was awesome. The scallops made be blush they were so good. The the sauce on the pork chop! Definitely try the roasted corn side dish. And the cocktail called, I think it was Summer Sling. Service kinks seem to have been worked out.
All: please come and join Annie Caiola and her supporters at 2 pm at the gazebo on the town square tomorrow for Free King of Pops! This will be a great time to learn more about Annie and her qualifications for the school board. Thanks in advance!
As a charter member of the olds, I haven’t been as excited about a concert in quite some time as I am about seeing the Rascals at Cobb Energy Center this weekend. That first album of theirs was a centerpiece of many an 8th grade graduation party in Queens and they sounded great on the Tony Awards show. Anyone else here planning to see Once Upon a Dream?
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr2bJx-8yfs&w=420&h=315
The show far exceeded my expectations. I saw Hall & Oates at Chastain a few weeks ago and they just mailed it in. The Rascals kicked butt, and they actually seemed to be enjoying themselves. The film clips were fun, especially seeing Vincent “Big Pussy” Pastore and Steve Buscemi in some scenes. It’s a shame they didn’t stay together. They probably had a lot of great soulful music in them.
Can someone give me an idea of market rent for a 1000sf 2BR/1BA, good condition rental (apt or house)? A friend is looking into trying to come to Decatur, and I have no idea about rent.
If your friend wants to be in the City of Decatur, they are looking at minimum $1000 a month. Likely more. Not much rental inventory around here right now.
Finding one will be tough. Do they have to be in the city limits? I have one friend who is renting a 2br/1ba house for 1500 a month, but I believe they are just outside the city. An apartment would probably be a better deal if no yard is needed. Occasionally one of the downtown condo buildings will have a rental available, with a 2br/2ba going for around 2000 a month. If they don’t mind being well outside the city limits, it’s much easier to find relatively affordable rental houses in the unincorporated Decatur area around Lawrenceville Hwy and North Druid Hills. Still a good area and an easy drive to downtown Decatur.
My mother in law used to rent an apartment around that size – maybe slightly smaller – for around $700 per month. Condition was decent but not excellent, but location couldn’t be beat. The apartments are operated by Braden Fellman and located over on Hillcrest near the Avondale MARTA station. Decatur City school district.
Adair Oaks fits your description and their website says they are still under $1000/month.
http://www.visionpropertiesinc.com/apartments.htm#AdairAnchor
Braden Fellman also has a bunch of properties in and around Decatur that might be worth checking out as Demanda suggested. http://bradenfellman.com/apartments/
Unfortunately there is no “market rent” for houses around here. A 2 bed/1 bath house/duplex/condo will vary from $700 to $2000 (or more) depending on location and quality.
I guess the critical factor is what the person considers “good condition”.
House will be a bit more, like $1200/mo
Does anyone know what’s going on in the old Kitsch’n 155 space? They now have craft paper covering the windows and I saw some work going on inside the other day.
Don’t know but I’ve seen people working in there for at least a few weeks.
Well, whatever it is, I am sure many here won’t like their name, signage, menu font, etc., and they will have reservations about their design choices, color palette and even the overall concept!
Frankly, I don’t even care for the craft paper in the windows.
Yeah, it doesn’t go all the way up. You can still see in, so what’s the point? They need to get it together if they are going to make it around these parts…
that’s one of the funniest things I’ve read here in a long time
Wrong side of the bed, DawgFan?
… more like right side of the blog, Hola.
That would be a good spot for an Arby’s. Or a Trader Joe’s.
“That would be a good spot for an Arby’s.”
+1
Considering it’s on the going in side of the road for Emory, CDC, and the VA, a drive thru coffee shop ala Caribou (RIP) would be perfect. The Starbucks is now swamped in the morning.
That seems like a sure-fire idea.
(You know that was originally an Arby’s, back in the day, right?)
Nice to see a Decatur place get a great score from the health inspector. 96 for New Orleans Snoball Cafe. Congratulations.
Note to the driver who zoomed around another vehicle on 2nd Ave early this morning, in order to race toward the next speed hump: I was walking out to put a couple more things in the recycling bin and nearly succumbed to the temptation to put a bottle through your back windshield as you sped away. (If I’d had more confidence in my middle-aged arm, I might’ve done it.)
Time to have those lawn signs made: STFD
Apparently you and I have more in common than we realize. I have felt the same urge on many occasions (although due largely to irrational confidence in my aging body, I am more afraid I will hit my target).
Let this also apply to the, ahem, “lady”, who honked and flipped me off yesterday afternoon when I STOPPED at the FREAKING STOP SIGN at North Druid Hills and Clairmont. This is actually not an uncommon occurrence. In fact, sometimes I intentionally wait an extra second or two even when it’s totally clear to go just to see if the person behind me will honk. But you, special lady, honked before I even came to a complete stop. I was all set to go off on you until I saw your silly face as you flipped me off while whizzing past me on Clairmont in your super cool Dodge Neon, but at that point all I could do was laugh my ass off. In fact I was still laughing a few minutes later when I passed you back because you got stuck in the right turn traffic. But I sincerely do hope you felt better for showing me what’s what
There was a Decatur police officer ticketing a woman in an SUV on one of the speed bumps at about 8:00 this morning. It was nice to see.
In Jamaica they call speed bumps “sleeping policemen”.
Thank you for that – I grew up calling them sleeping policemen. I asked my husband last weekend if he had ever referred to the bumps as such and he thought I was nuts.
Y’all don’t *even* try to make this a thing here in Decatur!
I am growing tomatoes for that very reason. No one will believe a middle aged woman could hit their speeding car with a rotten tomato on purpose.
I know this is old news now but am still curious about what the heck those very very loud and low helicopters were doing over Oakhurst several nights ago. It was late, I didn’t see searchlights, and have never heard such loud and low ones in all my crankyoldtimer decades here. We thought probably they were military but question why they would do a fly over on a residential area that late.
Also, on a wholly unrelated note that most of you won’t care about, I think I will follow leads from Parker Cross (nom de plume) and AHID (change my name). xoxo, Sharpie
…well, I like the new name, but it’ll take some getting used to. I’ve always thought of you as having a “softie” vibe– you come across as a kind person, and your emblem color’s like a sky & fluffy clouds kinda thing!
I have it on the best authority there will be a MAJOR moving sale tomorrow at 312 Second Ave., 9am-2pm. Books, books and more books, all kinds of books. Garden tools and supplies. Exercise equipment & sporting goods (x-country skiers, take note!). Furniture. Women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. Household items. Office supplies. Christmas decorations. Miscellaneous hardware too varied & numerous to mention. Several “free for the taking” bins.
It’s a block and a half from the East Lake Farmers Market, make a morning of it!
Whoa, are you moving? Where? You’re not taking the midnight train going anywhere, are you???
Right this minute, I’m tempted to take any train to anywhere, if it means I don’t have to follow through with this damned yard sale and then pack what’s left and move, and paint, and unpack, etc. But since I would probably break my neck trying to hop tonight’s freight train (and certain the cat wouldn’t cooperate), I will carry on. Moving the middle of next month (assuming no hiccups w/ either real estate transaction).
Good luck with both transactions and I hope I didn’t jinx anything by asking! Now I’m gonna have to make it over the ‘Khurst tomorrow to drag more details out of you…and to make sure you didn’t throw the cat onto a train!
Hope to see you! (I’ll be the one in disguise.)
Hope you’re not going too far.
Sweet of you to say. Just got a contract last night (on property I’m buying) and feeling very superstitious about sharing much until after inspection, etc. (My house is sold, so I have to move soon, regardless.)
Just wanted to say thanks to the folks at Pinnacle Fitness and CertaPro Painters for running the Biggest Loser Decatur competition earlier this year. In February they got me started and as of yesterday I dropped my thirtieth pound. Four more pounds and my reward to myself is an ice cream machine! Thanks guys.
Nice work, Keith! I also dropped 30 pounds this year. Feels good…
And what ice cream machine are you going with? I have been eyeballing the different ones for a while now.
Well done! I’ve had my eye on this one: http://www.cuisinart.com/products/ice_cream/ice-100.html
Anybody have other recommendations?
I am also looking for one with a built in compressor. I have heard good things about this one as well:
http://www.whynter.com/productdetail/refrigeration/ice_cream_maker/338
We have this one: http://www.cuisinart.com/products/ice_cream/ice-21.html and it seems to work fine for us. If you have a KitchenAid, I think they have an ice cream attachment as well.
I am fairly new to Oakhurst and live close to McCoy Park…but find it really hard to get to there on foot if you live East of McDonough. Any thought ever to terracing out a trail behind the College Heights school leading to McDonough? Sure would make it safer and easier for parents west of McDonough too who walk their kids to school.
When walking the dogs, I’ll trudge up behind the school and come out around the basketball courts. A trail would be nice.
talk to the school and the City, maybe something will get rolling, especially if you volunteer to help try and put together a group to get the project done…
Can someone explain to me reason for the following:
Many commercial buildings with double doors seem to only unlock one door (typically the right door), leaving the other door locked but openable from the inside. Why?
Anyone know why CSX (again!) had to blow horn multiple times last night in the middle of night at Atlanta Ave? I was so mad and too tired to even look at what time it was but I know it was in early morning like 2-3am. It’s miracle our kids didn’t wake up! Who and where I can file a complaint?
ACK! I convinced myself I was dreaming that, and I remember in a dreamy state wondering why I would dream something so obnoxious.
Who and where I can file a complaint? — You just did. What I mean is, the railroad is in charge and they aren’t gonna respond in any way that is the slightest bit satisfying to you (or at all, probably). A certain amount of horn-blowing is required by law at grade crossings, beyond which the engineer has broad discretion. If they think they need to blow their horn, they can — whether it’s because they see someone/something on or near the track, or because if they gotta be awake, they want to make sure Scott’s awake.
The Federal Railroad Administration requires the horn to be sounded at grade-level crossings regardless of the time of day or night and regardless of vehicular traffic or the lack thereof unless the crossing has been equipped and approved to exempt that. The cost to so equip such a crossing is $250K to $ 500K. As STG says, they may use it at other times if/when the engineer sees something else in the path of a train, like a trespasser on foot. CSX (and any other railroad) has no choice.
Dude, has anyone ever tried to nickname you Encyclopedia Brown? You are a veritable fount… can’t remember how the rest of that goes.
Genius? Yes, Steve’s a genius and an unbelievable volunteer for all things Decatur, but he’s also a railroad hound. Railroad stuff, the dude knows, even if we disagree. The cost of the special gates needed to create a “quiet zone” would also need to include lives likely lost as kids with earplugs stroll down the tracks while the engineer stares off at the stadium. Horns, god hate ‘em, are a fabulous, irreplaceable safety device. In addition to the financial and human cost, the City would also likely have to agree to be responsible for any injuries arising on the tracks since the regulations allow CSX to negotiate any conditions for the “quiet zone” and that’s what they’ve been asking elsewhere. Just google on pedestrians killed on railroad tracks. It happens and not infrequently. I could not imagine a worse place for a quiet zone than a densely developed urban area with multiple schools actually lining the tracks.
Thank you for all the reply. I live here long enough that I don’t even hear the “normal” horns but occasionally there’s one that is SUPER loud that still wake me up. I swear, the last night’s horn was so bad I thought the train was stopped there, blowing horn every 15 seconds as loud as they can…as if there were someone sleeping on the tracks or something. Hope to get some sleep tonight….zzz
Didn’t we pass a bond referendum a few years back to pay for “quiet zones”?
No. There was some reference to its being studied in the referendum, but no money for the installation of the required equipment was approved. (You have to do lots more than install the equipment, anyway, such as doing a census of surrounding businesses (read: schools) and population (read: lots of kids) to see how appropriate it would be in light of population density and character. That was back when the Relax Inn had just been torn down. I heard a rumor that the developers of the Dairy Queen triangle sought that mention on the referendum.) Here’s a link to an article from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about 2012 having the highest number of pedestrians killed by trains ever. http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/metro/pedestrians-killed-by-trains-spiked-in-despite-safest-year-in/article_07e5b0ce-9803-5e26-af23-1191a8970da3.html . In that article is another link to some related articles about why pedestrian deaths on railroad tracks are spiking.
Tom, thanks for putting this out there so succinctly. I believe you are a RR legal expert, aren’t you? It seem to me that they are not intended for urban areas or areas with pedestrian traffic, are they putting them in to areas like that? I’d certainly fight quiet zones and I hope they never come to Decatur.
If y’all don’t know anyone who has been affected by a train wreck, go read the “death on the tracks” investigative series by Walt Bogdanich in the NYT ( approx 2004) and then figure out if you want trains with no whistles going through town. No thanks.
There is a quiet zone on Frazier Road between Lawrenceville Highway and LaVista Road, not too far from Decatur, and another in the middle of Vinings, both of which I would say are in urban areas. Also, the City of College Park is trying to get a couple in the middle of their town.
On Frazier Road, there are no sidewalks in the vicinity of the RR crossing and although I don’t frequent the street, in 15 years of using it occasionally I have never once seen any pedestrians on that street between Lavista and L’ville Hwy.
Many thanks to Good Karma Coffee House over in Avondale for being tasty and allergy-friendly. If you have to avoid wheat, breakfast at a restaurant is pretty much out of the question. Cooking my own Mother’s Day and birthday brunch is not my idea of a treat, but even my non-gf family likes the waffles here. Also, the coffee is really good. (not a friend, relative or employee)
ate at Hola for the first time yesterday
ordered the fish tacos and some cheedip
yes, the server was nice; the iced water was cold
once the food arrived, it was downhill from there
i’d put it on par with El Matador in Oakhurst
coming from me, that’s not a compliment
and it’s more expensive
I have to agree on the fish tacos. I didn’t care for them either. Mrs OnCandler’s mushroom enchiladas were downright sweet — a bit unexpected.
We go back again when we’re feeling more carnivorous.
Hrm. Was thinking of trying it but I hate Matador with a passion.
for my taste, Mezcalitos in Oakhurst is still the champion of Mexican food in Decatur.
+10. Have never been disappointed in any respect, when it was Billy Goat’s Cantina or in its present incarnation.
The El Matador in Glenwood Park bit the dust last week.
What’s up with Glenwood Park? It seems like things have not really gotten going over there, why is that?
It’s all timing. Now that the market is coming back, the landlords think they can raise the rents exorbitantly. Newcomers like Kevin Gillespie, with a whole lot of liquid backing, can pay it. Existing tenants like Matador said “screw you!” Very little foot traffic plus high rent is an untenable equation.
For what it’s worth, I have no idea who Rick Julian is or why he hates Matador so much, but Mrs J_T and I are very happy that the Oakhurst Matador location will remain open. Billy Goats/My Cows/Mezcalito’s is great but we love Matador and have never been treated like dirt there. That’s got to be worth something…
I think to make it in Glenwood Park, you need to be a destination place like Gun Show, or a combination destination/neighborhood place, which The Shed and Vickery’s seem to manage to pull off .Pedestrian traffic is almost non-existent. There was a wine bar down the street from Vickery’s in a fairly hidden away location that was pretty popular for awhile with folks from outside the neighborhood and I think the parking issues eventually doomed it. Gun Show and The Shed have teamed up to offer valet parking and free parking is now available in the ENSO apartment building. If Gun Show’s initial success is sustained, I wouldn’t be surprised if another group moved into the development with a high profile chef.
I agree, the fish taco is disappointing. Go back and try the others, especially the carne asada and the carnitas. And the pork belly queso appetizer is ridiculous.
Does anyone know the Decatur artist who makes art from old doors? As the Dude and I prepare for the Portland move, we are trying to rehome everything in our house, since it was sold for a teardown. They are vintage 1923 from when it was built and we hate to see them end up as trash.
Side note, the moving sale is next weekend, see details in next week’s FFAF!
Contact the Decatur Arts Alliance. http://www.decaturartsalliance.org/
Contact Architectural Accents in Buckhead. When we restored/renovated our 1915 home we got a ton of period stuff there – doors, doorknobs and hardware, lighting, etc. They will buy your stuff and it will find a new home.

Jim Hudgins is a Decatur neighbor and runs a really great salvage yard. He might be interested. I have 404-523-2791 but look it up if that one doesn’t work. There’s a new-ish salvage yard in town that I read about recently in the AJC but I don’t remember the name. They are taking stuff from movie sets, other sources. Anyhow, a decent salvage operation might help you.
Where does one purchase a good pork shoulder around these parts?
Oakhurst Market? Sawicki’s? Shield’s Meat Market in Emory Village? I’d call any of these first to check because they are high quality meat markets but not gigantic.
My son-in-law gets his from Kroger and does a mighty fine job prepping that meat on the BGE. One of the many reasons I love him.
I second Kroger. They have great pork butts (shoulder) and picnic cuts (less marbled part of the shoulder). I smoked one of each last weekend and they were supurb.
I’ve had good quality and cuts from Oakhurst Market and YDFM.
Spotted Trotter.
If you’re willing to drive to Austell on a weekday, the best quality AND best price will be at Patak. If you call ahead, they will do special orders, too.
http://www.patakmeats.com/Patak_Meats/Welcome.html
Yes. Patak does everything right. Quality, service, and price can’t be beat. Definitely worth the trip.
Oak Grove Market does a great job
All of the prok at YDFM is Berkshire pork from Eden Farms, and it is excellent.
Thanks. You’re not the first to say that since I started asking. Good reconfirmation!
No problem. I also highly recommend the Eden Farms deli ham, which makes brands like Boar’s Head taste like pale imitations of meat by comparison. Also, Eden Farms bacon is nitrate free and absolutely delicious.
Is that available at the YDFM deli counter? All the recent changes in that area recently have left me “frightened and confused” (like a certain Caveman Lawyer).
It is, on the side where they keep the other deli ham, salamis, and other cured meats. It is packaged very plainly. And it is actually cheaper than the name-brand deli hams, which I think causes some people to assume it is of inferior quality.
You g-d, m-fer. I thought the Eden Farms nitrate-free ham at YDFM was MY secret! If they’re out of it next week because of a DM-fueled run on ham, Mrs. J_T is going to be very pissed.
But if we are spilling secrets, when you order the ham, right next to it is the Busseto salami. The regular genoa is damn good. The pepper coated one is like crack. In fact, I think I’m about to go make myself a sandwich right now…
I hear you — I considered not mentioning this. Hopefully the fact that I posted it to FFF on a Monday means few will read it!
I agree w/you on Busetto. The Patak Hunter’s salami is also damn good.
Had a great time last evening at the Wylde Center. The band, the weather, the food and drink, and of course the company, made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Hope they made some money on the silent auction.
My children and I swim at either McKoy or Glenlake pools at least five days a week throughout the summer. I am continually impressed by not only the professionalism of the pool staff, but also the many families who do a great job of keeping kids of all ages from causing a nuclear apocalypse. Trust me–if you knew. Lot of these kids, you’d know that they are capable.
There are two trends among adults that really kill the fun for others:
Trying to swim laps at the McKoy pool during free swim. Just don’t.
Groups of younger adults monopolizing an area of the pool: this happens way too often, and I don’t know if they know that they are being enormous pains in the tuchis or not, but when I or any kids try to get through to that area, the splashing, jumping, and screaming go up ten notches, to the point where kids get bumped or pushed under. I will continue to go where I want to go, no matter who is trying to hog the entire deep end of the McKoy pool, but I appeal to the common courtesy of anyone reading this who engages in this behavior: Don’t hog.
laps at mckoy pool = almost an oxymoron, right
ebster is the way to go for laps
Isn’t Ebster closed for renovation? And Glenlake has been closed a lot lately. So lap swimmers may be hard up lately although I can’t imagine how you’d do laps much at McKoy.
