That Loud, Elusive Neighbor Friday Night was the 420 Fest
Decatur Metro | April 22, 2013In case anyone didn’t catch this in FFAF over the weekend, there was a rather funny phenomenon taking place all over Decatur on Friday night, with many residents asking themselves and their relations, “What is that music playing one street over?! Really the nerve of some people!” Here’s a taste of the comments made here…
“we were convinced it was a neighbor a street over having a party.”, said Nubbs.
“Could have sworn it was coming from 3rd. But it was definitely a band and it was loud.” said Oakhurstmama.
“We are way up in NW Decatur and my daughter couldn’t fall asleep because of the noise.” lamented AHID.
“we are on melrose and it was sound loud we assumed it was someone on parkwood having a big party.”
“Live near thinking man tavern and it could be heard inside our house.”
So what was this phantom party that could be heard all over Decatur, but even “the police were saying that they were having difficulty finding the source.”?
As it turns out, it was mostly likely George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic playing all the way over in Candler Park at the 420 Fest! It sure is crazy how far sound can travel given the right conditions and the decibel level!
Damn – I missed George Clinton? I’m obviously too old to stay up-to-date on cool stuff.
Ditto, apparently. I haven’t enjoyed 420 Fest since it left Harmony Park.
+1
It was quite a show. I was kind of in awe standing there recognizing their various influencers and of course, the huge impact they’ve had on so much of what we’ve been listening to over the last 30 years.
We should all be lucky enough to have Parliament shaking us loose and keeping us awake.
Amen! We were supposed to go, but I got sick. Totally bummed that I missed seeing live one of the greatest funkmasters of all time…
DM, I know what you meant to say with “…all the way over in Candler Park…”, but the East Lake Marta station is closer to that festival than it is to the Decatur Cemetery. And most of the sound reports came in from areas around the East Lake Marta.
CP really is only a neighborhood away. Having lived there for a long time, and now here for 8 years, it kind of baffles me how little some of our Decatur people visit or know about it.
“but the East Lake Marta station is closer to that festival than it is to the Decatur Cemetery.” Eh, they seem relatively equidistant, but I take your point. I also think it’s dependent on the topography between here and there.
We don’t have to know anything about it now that we’re getting our own Candler Market.
I asked one of the CPM guys the other day what was taking so long and he said they think they are about a year out from opening. (cue impatience and random whining)

I’m certainly aware of it, and frequently ride MARTA to Candler Park from Decatur, as I did Saturday. The park is a bit of a hike from the station, but it beats trying to park around there.
It’s only three blocks if you go down Dekalb Ave and Mell Ave.
Well, they don’t call it one nation under a groove because they play for smallest audience possible.
I was totally out of the loop this year and missed 420 Fest. I would have loved to see George Clinton. I saw Rusted Root a few years ago and it was awesome. I almost missed Funk Pirates at Harmony Park yesterday, but a friend alerted me Saturday night. Now that was funkalicious. I need to pull my head out of whatever sand it’s been in and get with the festival program!
A friend so kindly pointed out that we have moved on from the stage of staying up late to see George Clinton to calling the police to shut him down….
Oh god I didn’t even think of it that way. I feel old now.
At least it was a party we DID get invited to!

A sad note- the band’s long-time bassist died last Thursday: http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1559208/parliament-funkadelic-bassist-cordell-boogie-mosson-dead-at-60
RIP to a grand master of funk.
