DeKalb County Seeking to Bring New Transportation Sales Tax Vote Before Voters
Decatur Metro | December 19, 2012Saporta Report reported Monday that DeKalb County officials are planning on asking the Georgia General Assembly in early 2013 to approve a local option sales tax to be spent on various transportation projects. From CEO Burrell Ellis’ budget recommendation to DeKalb County Commissioners, he writes…
“In 2013, we will seek the Georgia Legislature’s approval for a local option sales tax for Transportation purposes, in order to address this growing backlog of street resurfacing, sidewalks, intersection safety and congestion relief and related projects.”
The county has nearly spent all the 2006 transportation bond funds, and now wants to allocate $5 million from the HOST program to continue to pay for needed transportation repairs and upgrades. But HOST isn’t enough to leverage all available matching funds, according to Saporta. That’s why the commissioners and the CEO are pursuing this option.
Gosh, just when we thought we dodged the T-SPLOST bullet. Let me be the first to voice my opposition to any more of my hard-earned money going to this reprehensible government. Enough is enough. We all know our federal taxes are going up under the current administration. We pretty much know that our property taxes are going up as the Board of Commissioners has said they “can’t cut any more”. Now this. You have got to be kidding.
Ellis isn’t kidding. Raising taxes is what he does. When you need money to pay cronies, you have to get it from somewhere, after all.
One can only hope that the Gen. Assembly will give this the short shift it deserves.
I supported the TSPLOST but I oppose this. Dekalb County has proved completely untrustworthy.
Would the cities within DeKalb be entitled to a portion of this revenue IF voters ever approve of another sales tax?
That would depend on how the legislation is written.
Two thoughts: I am somewhat surprised about the immediate negative statement reactions before any details are avialable. And second, keep in mind that the T-SPLOST was approved by many areas inside I285, including Decatur.
Oh, and where did Mic get his information that “we all know”our federal taxes are going up”?
Why are you surprised? Do you really have that much faith in Dekalb Co. govt.?
“Oh, and where did Mic get his information that “we all know”our federal taxes are going up”?”
Have you not watched the news at all since the election? It isn’t a done deal, but the consensus is clearly that taxes are going up. If nothing else, the temporaty payroll tax deduction is expiring, and it needs to. We can’t keep borrowing from our future just to prop up the present.
With ObamaCare kicking in; borrowing 42 cents of every dollar that the federal government spends & the Dems not interested in cutting spending—–federal taxes are going up.
