Westchester Drive Getting a New Sidewalk and Other Decatur Sidewalk Repairs
Decatur Metro | November 5, 2012Do you like sides of the road designed specifically for walking?
Also on tonight’s Decatur City Commission agenda, new and improved sidewalks around Decatur! Spit straight out a note from Asst. City Manager David Junger to City Manager Peggy Merriss, here are the recipients of this year’s $150,000 in sidewalk improvements. Jackhammer drumroll please…
- Clairemont Ave from Michigan Ave to the northern city limits, repairs
- Derrydown Way/Poplar Circle pedestrian bridge over Shoal Creek, removal and replacement
- Kirk Road from South Candler Street to Avery Street, repairs or replacement of existing sidewalk on northern side of street
- Maxwell Street from Oakview Road to Third Avenue, repairs to both sides of the street
- Westchester Drive from Scott Boulevard to Dogwood Way, new sidewalk on one side of street
Why did Westchester get a NEW sidewalk? According to Mr. Junger’s note, they asked. And over 75% of residents in the area were in favor. Well, alright then!
Yes! As someone who walked over that rickety bridge for far too many years, it’s good to see the Shoal creek bridge up for replacement. Very exciting.

Yay!
Hooray for sidewalks on Westchester! The stretch from Harold Byrd to Scott gets a lot of traffic (Y patrons and drivers cutting the Clairemont/Scott corner) and has become dangerous for pedestrians. Foot traffic will also increase when Westchester reopens as a school, and it’s smart for CoD to get the sidewalk project underway.
I’m with margaret, love to see sidewalks on westchester. now if we could figure out someway to get to other side of scott without getting hit by 60mph cars, life would be sweet.
A footbridge.
Wish they could operate a take-no-prisoners speed trap on Scott for a few weeks.
Everywhere in Decatur should have sidewalks on at least one side of the street. Is it too late to get that on the ballot as Amendment 3?:
Provides for improving student achievement and parental involvement through more sidewalk options.
Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to allow state or local approval of sidewalks upon the request of local Decatur Metro bloggers?
( ) YES

In all seriousness, that was the City’s goal when they were using bond money to build sidewalks in the past few years. A few neighborhoods, though, did not want the sidewalks, so they didn’t get them.
Correction: It wasn’t a few neighborhoods that didn’t want them but a few loud objectors in a few neighborhoods. The households in those neighborhoods were never polled. If they had been, I’ll bet those neighborhoods would have sidewalks now.
I heard it was the Lamont/Vidal coalition keeping the righteous Garden Laners down!
