Cozee Teas On East Ponce de Leon Ave Has Closed
Decatur Metro | October 25, 2012Marla points to Cozee Teas Facebook page, which states that “Due to many unforeseen circumstances, Cozee Teas has closed its doors indefinitely.”
The shop opened in the Spring and was present at multiple Decatur Square events over the summer. Best of luck to the owners in future endeavors!
Oh, no! I never even got a chance to get bubble tea…
I did. I’ll just leave it at that.
Why be nasty?
I think being nasty would have been to Yelp my experience and discourage others from going there, which I didn’t. That’s a non-issue now. As mentioned below, being so close to a place with a loyal fan base like JM is already tough, and if people are trying your product and it’s not being prepared or served properly even after pointing it out, then you really have a problem. I’m sure she’s a perfectly nice and capable person, but even a love and passion for your product can’t keep a business afloat, that’s the unfortunate reality of the business world. And for the record, I love tea, and wanted to love this place when I heard it was opening, and I’m sorry that someone’s dream has been side-tracked. But the beauty of life is you can constantly recreate yourself, and hopefully she’ll take it as a learning experience and move forward.
We need a standard form for business closures:
Please fill out one of the statements:
– I’m sad because………………………………………………………..
– I’m not surprised because………………………………………….
– I was going to go there soon, darn it, but didn’t because……………………………
– I wish I had heard of this place because…………………………………………….
And there should be an automatic term checker that won’t let you say anything that might hurt the owner’s feelings or irritate DM readers.
That’s fair. So file under the not surprised because I went in on a SWELTERING 100 degree day, ordered a cold drink, they served it room temp. I politely asked what temp. they normally served it at, she recognized it was basically room temp, and made me another. The woman handed me the new one, and it was room temp also. I just took it, left, and threw it out. First and last trip.
And there should be an automatic term checker that won’t let you say anything that might hurt the owner’s feelings or irritate DM readers.

An automatic term checker would be incredibly irritating.
Sorry, AHID, I have to believe a small business operator whose enterprise just folded up under them has more pressing concerns than getting their feelings hurt by something somebody writes here.
That being said, are you actually advocating some kind of automatic censoring device?!
Of course! And the button for that function would be right next to the one that auto-corrects what I type to what I really mean to say. And while I’m at it, this form should self-populate with frequently used expressions like “already have enough yogurt shops” or “nothing ever does well in that location”. And it could be linked to a reporting function, e.g. 50% of posters are sad, 20% saw it coming, 15% were just about to visit it, and 15% were clueless.
That’s too bad. The owner was very kind, and seemed to be giving the small business world a go. Hopefully she’ll land on her feet.
Also, this reminds me of when San Fransisco Coffee opened up where Yogurt Tap is now. I wonder if a coffee/tea shop can survive if it’s within 50 yards of Java Monkey?
The big issue for all of these closures is under-capitalization in a competitive market. Consumers simply expect more these days. Even Yogurt Tap had to rebuild to stay in the game.
Check out Tealuxe in Harvard Square, Cambridge MA to see what the tea biz can look like at its best. I despise tea, but would make Tealuxe part of my life just for the hip factor (great photos on their Facebook page).
Loved the tea they sold there- I will really miss it. The owner was very nice and her bulk teas were awesome.
I really liked this place. The last time I was in there, she was talking about upgrading her food line and making all these plans. A few days later, they closed and never opened again.
I wish them well and hope all is ok.
I get the idea from things posted on the door that maybe it wasn’t entirely a business issue.
I loved this place. my mom in law and I would go there and do the high tea. We like to try different tea places and this one had the one of the best high teas in the area. We were going to go again next week but I guess we’ll have to find a new place. I am really sad to see it go. My only comfort is that I have a container of the blueberry green tea which I will now hoard like the treasure that it is.
I will say, I got in there one time after they first opened, and then every time we tried to go after that they were closed, and at very odd hours (11:30 am on a Wednesday, 4:00 on a Saturday). So I’m guessing there were some extenuating circumstances. Or they just didn’t take it seriously enough.
Good luck to them, regardless.
Same here, tried to stop by three times and all three times it was randomly closed during what would be considered normal business hours.
Never patronized them but will join in any “good luck down the road” sentiment being offered to the owner(s).
There are a number of businesses in downtown Decatur that I wonder about staying afloat (those serving a niche market). On the day Jimmy John’s did their $1.00 sub day I happened to be in line in front of the dude who runs the tattoo place above Garlic and overheard him mention that he’s gone from breaking even to making a little money so that’s encouraging (unless you have a distaste for tattoos).
I went there quite frequently and they had some of the best loose teas I’ve ever had. Better than Tevana and saved me from having to order from Market Spice in Seattle. I mean VERY good blends and she was willing to allow u to create your own blends.
The owner was very nice and she gave no indication that she was in trouble the last time I stopped in. The note on the door gave me the impression that it was something other than a biz related closing. I assumed sadly it was a death or illness in her family.
Noooo!!! I really like the Cozee Tea place. Please do not close down! CT fills a void for all of us out there that cannot drink coffee. I mean Java Monkey is close by and is cool and everything, but means nothing to me because coffee makes feel terrible. I had a business meeting at Cozee Tea once and the tea and atmosphere were really good. I hope Cozee can hang in there.
Good chance to recall some of the places that have come and gone. Anyone remember the Thai place where American deli is now? The barbecue joint that briefly occupied the space now held by the Persian restaurant? The record store where the art college now has its gallery? The Burger King with the unusable drive-thru? The car museum and ice cream shop across from DHS?
I still miss Indie Bookstore and Coffehouse!!!!
So sad to hear this, my kids LOVED the bubble tea and although she was often out of things we asked for, she tried really hard to please.
I visited Cozee a few times and wasn’t impressed. The flavored teas tasted really cheap to me, and the place… well, as hard as the owner tried, it just wasn’t up to par with the rest of Decatur. Sorry, but you have to have a bit more style and local culture. And by culture I don’t mean obviously trying to copy Java Monkey.
