I don’t know this Jon Watson fella but that’s a spot-on review of Mac McGee’s. When Mrs. J_T wants a burger, that’s where we go. Farm Burger, Iberian Pig and Brick Store are ll very good, but MMcG’s is our favorite. Their beet salad, when available, is also probably my single favorite dish in Decatur. The ploughman’s sandwich isn’t far behind.
As for the whiskey selection, I have a bourbon and scotch loving friend from Alpharetta who drives down to meet us in Decatur just for their selection of brown liquors.
[Yes, I really have friends who live in Alpharetta ]
I don’t get why he gave only 2 stars when the text of his review would have seemed to justify more. And at the end it lists the type of food as “Irish pub grub,” which is really misleading when you consider why typical Irish pubs attempt to pass off as food. This may be close to heresy around here but I think the food at Mac Magee’s is better than Leon’s.
You have to completely ignore the stars awarded. The AJC apparently switched to a new system a while back where all restaurants, from bars to Bacchanalia, are ranked according to the same standards. It’s pretty stupid. That said, the review would still seem to merit 3 stars under the guidelines listed (“merits a drive if you’re looking for this kind of thing”)
I’m with you on Mac McGee vs. Leon’s, heresy or not. But as long as enough folks recognize this to keep them in business, I’m OK with all the wannabe hipsters and trendy folks looking down on us while they wait an hour and a half for their peanut butter and bacon
Excellent point.
I actually prefer the food at both Mac Magees and Brick Store to Leon’s. That said, I do not think the food at Mac Magees “merits a drive,” which I assume means more than a short one. I do think the cocktails at Leon’s merit a drive, however, if you care about that sort of thing.
Second the admiration for Mac McGee’s. Their food is really excellent. Now that Watershed has decamped from Decatur, my pick for best burger in town is at no246. Unfortunately, it is only on the lunch menu.
Really? I wasn’t going to post anything, but I had a pretty disappointing burger at no246 last week. I haven’t been to Mac McGee’s (but will try it out now) but I think farm burger beats no246 hands down in the burger dept. The toast with sweet potatoes and chestnuts was amazing, though!
Which headline does the picture go with? The Flawed Stanford Organic Food Study?
My no helmet wearing ways are vindicated! Yes, I will still put one on my daughter in her bike trailer…
Thanks for putting up the Amendment #1 (aka the Charter Amendment) info DM. I hope folks understand that voting yes will hurt CSD and public schools around the state, and I encourage everybody to come out on the 15th at 6:30 to learn more at Westchester. CSD will have speakers for and against the amendment.
