Getting Help for a Sick or Injured Hawk

Leslie wrote in this morning…

Hi there – I saw this bird in my neighbor’s yard yesterday. I think it is sick or possibly hurt. Can you post a picture and ask people to write in with suggestions of what to do – I know there’s a bird rescue organization in the area but I can’t think of the name…surely the DM readers will have some ideas.

I’ve already sent Leslie the contact information of AWARE, the “first responders” in the Atlanta area for injured wildlife.  However, if you have any other info/suggestions to share in the mean time, please comment below.  Leslie has promised to keep us updated!

  1. Auburn has a program that will maybe help…

  2. AWARE is a fabulous organization. (I brought them a pigeon once, and the kind folks there treated him as though he were a bald eagle.) Also note that AWARE has an extensive wish list plus Saturday afternoon volunteer work projects.

To find other rehabilitators in Georgia, visit the link below. (Note that the list isn’t comprehensive. I can see some obvious omissions such as AWARE and Noah’s Ark.)

  3. Chattahoochee Nature Center has a Raptor rehab program, problem is that you need to try to get it to them… My experience trying to catch an injured Red Tail Hawk was, well, interesting. Maybe you are more comfortable around large talons thrashing around than I am.

  4. Put a big garbage can over it, put a weight on top, and call those people that DecaturCyn provided… He’ll stay calm under there until they arrive… We did it once for a Cooper’s hawk that hit a tree in our yard. The DeKalb County Animal Services Dept. gave us the nuber to a different non-profit org that specialized in just this kind of thing. Cost us a few bucks, but it was worth it to save such a magnificent creature. This from their site:

If you find a sick, injured or newly dead crow, blue jay or raptor, please report the find to the DeKalb County Board of Health, then contact DeKalb County Animal Services and Enforcement at 404-294-2996.
