What are Your Decatur Book Festival “Must-See” Events?
Decatur Metro | August 24, 2012OK folks. Book fest is only one week away.
This ain’t like doing your taxes, mowing your lawn, or cutting the dog’s toenails. Do not procrastinate on figuring out your Decatur Book Festival must-sees! Otherwise you’re doomed to confusion, crying into trade paperback self-help books, and eating an obscene amount of $3 festival-priced King of Pops popsicles while you try to explain to your family/friends you MUST attend The Art of Procrastination featuring John Perry and that’s why you can’t go to The Seed Underground: A Growing Revolution to Save Food featuring Janisse Ray.
So here’s the schedule in full (with LINKS!). Isn’t it great? I stole it from the DBF website. Tell us what you’re planning to go see, because we’d rather just take your advice than make the decisions for ourselves. Thanks in advance!

I recently read The Night Circus by Erin Morgernstern and I’m particularly interested in her appearance. Paul Wilkes, author of The Art of Confession, is an old friend, so I can’t miss him Saturday afternoon. I’d like to see at least one of Janisse Ray’s talks; same for John T. Edge. I’ve seen the musical duo the Skipperdees completely charm a crowd at Grocery on Home so I’ll try to catch them on the Bandstand. After the article about Chuck Thompson’s new book in the Times this week, his bit should be very interesting, as long as it doesn’t turn into a lynch mob.
Hey FM–Music Stage is in the Pita Pocket Plaza. We are hopeful that people will be able to get to the community bandstand by festival time, but not certain. We haven’t planned for any activities there at all this year.
Thanks. I imagine I would have discovered that. Bandstand stuff used to disturb Court House events, I seem to remember.
There are events?!
Woah! Strom Thurmond’s America… (I’m hoping the author wrote it as a cautionary tale).
BTW, y’all should check out the panel on poetry and song lyrics. My lovely wife will be introducing the participants.
Mr. Lark–You probably know Joseph Crespino. He lives here in town and is married to folk-singer extraordinaire Caroline Herring.
The book is a serious history, neither a loving portrait nor a hit job, but instead an examination of his impact on national politics.
And don’t forget to Book the Brick to have a beverage with your favorite author!

Wait! What about the Kidnote speaker on Friday? http://atlantaplanit.com/events/event.php?eid=49045
Is that happening? I thought it looked pretty cool.
OMG — MUTTS! featuring Patrick McDonnell, who uses his syndicated comic strip to support shelter adoptions of orphan animals.
Definitely plan on checking out Baratunde Thurston’s talk on Saturday morning. The thing about John Kennedy Toole looks fascinating and I’m a fan of Archer, so I have to go see Adam Reed.
Sunday, the thing about Henry Darger looks awesome and I kind of have to be there for Rob Reid’s talk about his book, “Year Zero,” which everyone should come check out.
Glad to see the Darger event is not on the Children’s Stage.
