Unnamed Bar Also Moving Into West College Commercial Space
Decatur Metro | August 9, 2012Scott points to this Facebook page that announces the arrival of a new bar “to be named later” at the under-construction strip on West College Ave at Mead Rd. The description on Facebook describes the spot as …
A neighborhood bar, nestled in beautiful Oakhurst in Decatur, Georgia. All we need is a name. And a license. But we need a name to get the license.
This unnamed bar joins “Corrina’s Corner”, a pet supplies store, as the second business to announce opening in this building.
Is West College is the new Ponce?!

Hmmmm. Is there any reason why a bar next to a pet food store could be a problem? I can think of at least one business that would not recommend it!
I like sticking with “Unnamed Bar” myself.
I also recommend that in the middle of the place they install a giant Jenga game made out of 2x4s for patrons to play.
My wife suggested they keep “Bar to Be Named Later”, but I like a shortened and cryptic BBNL.
I second the Unnamed Bar idea. At last, a place to buy a beer in Decatur! I mean… um.
Sidetracks
“Hair of the Dog”
Opens for breakfast daily?
Oakhurst Bar is probably too obvious. If you want to be mean, try “Thankless.” (Thankful Missionary Baptist is the church next door.) Or, for the cryptic — WGOS (White Guys On Stools). Or to honor the cross street, “Mead’s”
Mead IS the new craft beer.
We are very much looking forward to this. The plan is to be a place parents can take their kids in the evening, then come back after leaving the kids with the sitter.
Now if we could just figure out a way to go to the bar with the sitter and leave the kids at home unattended!
You are creating the impression that you have unwholesome intentions toward your baby-sitter!
… hope the kids made it to school on time…
If they’re saving that internal wall, there’s just no good reason not to name it Lubrication 75. No brainer.
+1. A great name! When I lived in Oakhurst, a friend and I often talked of opening a bar in a building in Kirkwood Village emblazoned with the sign “Kirkwood Caskets” and keeping the name. Our slogan was going to be “I got embalmed at Kirkwood Caskets”.
I wonder when Decatur will finally get a beer garden. It’s a natural concept for a town with so many strollers.
UJoint.
Nope. More along the lines of this: http://www.bohemianhall.com/en/Photos.php
OK, that would be most excellent, and UJoint ain’t that. But as far as having a biggish outdoor space where you can park your stroller and that’s kid-friendly, UJoint fits the bill.
I think you could do a miniature version of a German Beer Garden on the Raging Burrito patio
I wonder if the space behind Feast is big enough.
Czek and Slovak lessons? I didn’t know anyone still spoke Slovak since my great-grandmother died!
Fun article about the beer garden trend in New York here: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/29/nyregion/beer-gardens-growing-steadily-in-new-york.html.
I have vague memories of attending a German biergarten in Queens with my purely Irish family in the late 50’s, and a German joint that had a couple of bowling lanes in the basement with pin boys.
There’s a biergarten type place in Reynoldstown on Flat Shoals (the name escapes me – Park something) that is advertised as a coffee/cocktail/dog park establishment.
That concept would do really well in Oakhurst.
ParkGrounds. Nice place, although I think of it mainly as a coffee shop.
Or if we wanted to be really “whacky”, what about these kinds of places that are going strong in pubs in England
“Part of the Spirit Pub Company, Wacky Warehouse venues are attached to family pubs, such as Fayre & Square”

This might suit people better though! A beer garden with swings and slides

A Low Bar. Because that seems to be what they’re setting with the minimalist planning thus far.
…or “Raise – The Bar”, but customers would always be asking, Where’s Ray?
Somebody on the FB page shows what the business once was named, and it would be a great name for the bar.

The Fellowship Hall. It’s near a church. Can bars be that close to churches in Decatur?
I don’t think there’s any proximity restrictions in Decatur, except if the church is a polling place. If a bar is within 250′ of a polling place, they can’t sell booze during voting hours on election days. I think the Marlay just barely gets a pass on that one.
Does CoD get a pass from the county ordinance?
Just as Decatur was able to get Sunday sales before DeKalb, I’m assuming our alcohol ordinance, like our zoning, is completely distinct from the county’s.
Sounds like a Steve question!
The Grog Shop.
I miss the Grog Shop!
Moe’s
Two options
Majority prefers: Mead on Mead
Minority prefers: Mead
Why would Dekalb County have anything to do with the City of Decatur’s zoning ordinances?
Scott’s “pub shed” just became even denser.
The votes are in, the results have been partially ignored. You don’t even have to go to the iTunes store to learn the name. It’s “The Imperial”.
It will be named The Imperial.
The Imperial! I like it, adds a bit of grandeur.
I really liked “Mead on Mead”. But maybe then they’d really have to serve mead, truth in advertising and all that? The regulations may be more complicated for serving mead, not to mention having to make or find good mead.
You used “good” and “mead” in the same sentence. I’m not sure you can do that.
Ah, so there was a reason that the Vikings were grouchy?
Yes. They’ve never won the Super Bowl. Mead is just an aggravating factor.
Does this mean 20 ounce pints?
Interesting news coming out of the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association meeting tonight…at least interesting to me. The developer is working on a zoning change so they can build a new Candler Park Market next to the renovated building. The CPM guys were there as well. Personally, I hope they get the zoning change.
Wow. Really? Which lot?
You can’t drop really interesting news and be really vague like that!
Not 100% sure, but I think it’s on Mead right behind the current structure. I say that, because one of the questions was about whether kids would continue to be able to walk between Olympic and Mead in that space, and the answer was yes. They said they shared their plan with the neighbors next to the lot who probably have the biggest interest in whether it changes from residential zoning, and could have the biggest objections. From my POV a new branch of Candler Park Market along with the rehab of the building they’re working on now is a big upgrade and buffer to the residences from College. Also, the guys from CPM said they would be very open to hearing from the community on ideas they might have for what they would like to see in the market. The example they gave was their good selection of German fare in the current location.
1% milk by the quart and/or half gallon
Right now, what seems to be one big commercial parcel is actually zoned Residential on both ends. The undeveloped lot facing College on the east side, next to the blue/greenish, 2-story house, along with the lot facing Mead just south of the new bar and separated by the rest of the street by the alley. Curious which lot they’re considering but, either way, they can definitely add me to the Supportive Neighbors column. That parcel has been a real drain on the neighborhood for years for a variety of reasons — economic, political and otherwise. To see it coming back to active and attractive use is great news.
Awwwww Yeaaaahhhhh!!!!!
The lot they are talking about building a Candler Market is the empty lot fronting College, they are working with the homeowner to make nice and will keep a tree he is very fond of. The building will be set back off of College towards the middle or back of the lot. Rezoning is the next step. In addition to the bar that will take the 2 right spaces of the existing building, the aforementioned dog/pet bakery is signed on and within 2 days a lease will be signed by a yoga studio for the remaining commercial space.
