Coincidentally, today is National Doughnut Day
That was not a coincidence.
Guess I know where I’m heading for a mid-morning snack!
At their Open House last weekend, the doughnuts were even yummier than at the Decatur Farmer’s Market! And they have specialty coffees! What’s not to like?
I stopped in this morning and there was a pretty good crowd. My intention was to leave with a dozen for my office, but I just couldn’t do it to all the people behind me. The doughnuts were already running very low. I know they were busy making more, so this time I just left with one for myself and one excellent cup of coffee. I know they’ll find their groove quickly, but for now I think they definitly need to take at least one lesson from Dunkin’ Donuts…the doughnut man needs to start a lot earlier in the morning!
And speaking of Dunkin’ Donuts, I haven’t had a good fresh donut from them in Years! Everything always seems stale, so I quit them for anything other than their coffee…which I enjoy but now Revolution is, well, a revolution and a revelation for me.
Excellent point that doughnuts are a great thing to bring to work or sports or book clubs etc. Were the mini-doughnuts only for the Open House or are they available all the time? Revolution Doughnuts are so rich that it might be better to buy 24 mini doughnuts and space them out over time than a dozen biggies.
There were no mini-donuts this morning. I don’t know what the regular state of donutness will be.
Oh, and I really, really like the “Homer Simpson Plaza” designation. I’m going to do my part to make that stick. It’s perfect…Pizza, Beer, and ummmmm Doughnuts!
A cool designation like that would facilitate the expulsion of the formerly bad karma of that shopping center, ever since the fire that drove out Badda Bing. Some fine places have left like Java Mocha, the scrapbooking place, Isabella’s, and more.
Agree. I love the “Homer Simpson Plaza” designation. All that’s needed is some sort of shop that can offer a bucket of fried chicken with “extra skins” and 64 slices of American cheese. 63 slices of American cheese. 62 slices of…
I know what I’m doing for lunch today!
Who has tried a caramel bacon flavor doughnut and can report on the flavor? I’m having a little trouble getting my head around that one. I’m more of a vanilla bean fan. But given the proliferation of unique flavors these days like sea salt chocolate and wasabi ice cream, I guess it may be tasty.
I tired a mini-one of those on their Kickstarter day and thought it was very good. I will get a big boy doughnut version the next time I see one available. It has all the food groups…caramel & bacon.
The bacon had a really smokey flavor, not like regular breakfast bacon, but like pit bacon. If you like that, then you’ll enjoy.
They could open a shop and sell nothing but their pimento cheese scones and do quite well. Hope those appear frequently, either there or at the farmer’s market.
Looks like Scoutmob picked up on the “Homer Simpson Plaza” name.
But who will be the first to consume a true Homer Simpson Plaza sampler? I’m thinking one slice from Avellino’s, one donut from Revolution, and a half growler from Ale Yeah!
First one to document with photo the before and after and includes a short food review (how does the donut complement the beer or pizza and vice versa) wins a prize.
“Half growler”??? Pshaw, sir, pshaw! Any homage to Homer Simpson MUST involve a full growler, and mayhap even TWO full growlers!!!
DM must have meant the “Marge Simpson Sampler”. The Homer would be a whole pie and a dozen donuts washed down with the two growlers. Make it a real challenge and I’m in!
I feel like this is how the prize winnings will go
Do they have WiFi and room to work on a laptop?
Certainly hope not. Let’s not waste the few precious tables they have available.
+1
One more thing to say, and this applies to those parking in front of both Karvarna and now Revolution. Those who park in those spaces please try to remember, it’s not always all about you. Those parking spaces are angled for a reason. It is meant so that when you back out you will continue in the same direction as when you pulled in. Backing out and trying to drive the other way is dangerous, yes, but mostly it’s selfish. To the woman leaving Revolution this morning who backed into someone else, you were the inspiration for this post.
They’ve pretty much had a line out the door and past Ale Yeah! all morning (Saturday). Nice to see a new business killin’ it.
Agree. But hoping they develop a bit of briskness in their service groove. Just before noon, I joined the line (which was out the door) and it barely advanced at all over about 10 minutes. The display case was sparse but they had doughnuts trickling out of the kitchen, it didn’t seem to be that people were stacked up waiting for them to come out of the oven — it was more like the action behind the counter was a slow-motion ballet. Big disappointment, but I don’t have half an hour to spend in line for a doughnut, even if it does have both caramel and bacon (the thought of which still makes me want to weep that such magic is possible).
Rode my bike by there @ 9:45 this AM. Line 10 deep OUTSIDE the door. What are they selling?
We got a half-dozen this morning (they were out of two different kinds by the time we got to the counter, but thankfully my 3-year-old decided he could live with caramel instead of chocolate). While I am a sugar junkie I’m not a big donut fan, but these were AWESOME. We’ll be back very soon.
Got in line today and was grateful to get whatever was available–a yummy vanilla this time. If the bakers can figure out how to keep up with the demand, I think they’ve got a winner! The dynamic in this plaza is hopping, totally different from years ago when Mocha Java had to close.
