Decatur Arts Fest to Offer “Bike Valet Service”
Decatur Metro | May 7, 2012This is a pretty cool idea! From the Decatur Arts Festival website…
New this year is a free bike valet service. A valet attendant remains on duty to park and monitor bikes during the event.
Park your bike and enjoy the festival knowing that it will remain secure. Look for signs to direct you to the bike valet area.
The Decatur Arts Festival worked with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition to provide this service. We hope to reduce the event’s impact on traffic congestion and carbon emissions by supporting the bicycle transportation alternative. The bike valet service is sponsored by Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and Bicycle South.
Both the Decatur Arts Alliance and Bicycle South are DM sponsors. However the h/t for this bit of info goes to Next Stop…Decatur.
Reminds me of these sketch on Portlandia –
I thought the exact same thing.
Good work. Beat me to it. That’s what I get for checking DM at the end of the day.
The City of Decatur, City of Decatur Active Living and Bicycle South made this possible for the festival this year–dust off your bike and ride on down!
Awesome. I hope it’s located in front of Leon’s. Easy access from the “path” and southside straight up church. North side access between Parker’s. Only a thought. It’ll be great wherever it is. Thanks all involved.

This is great and I am going to totally lean on every other festival I support to provide the same service. I think a stroller valet would be great as well.
Pat, I’m afraid that “in front of Leon’s” is way too prime real estate for the bike valet, but I am sure it will be situated somewhere safe and convenient.
One more thing, the other party involved in bringing this idea to fruition is our own Decatur Active Living. Those folks are great about providing opportunities for getting the whole community–every age–off the sofa.
They had this same setup at the Inman Park festival, so I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a standard attraction at most neighborhood festivals going forward.
There are also public, social bicycle rides associated with all major Decatur festivals. Bike Decatur, an advocate group, is hosting a Lube & Air service center at this weeks Saturday Farmers Market. At 10:30am, they are leading a bicycle tour of Decatur, somewhere in the 8-10 mile range. ByBicycles, a local bicycle consulting firm, will host what they call “Clunker Rides”. All types of alternative transportation are invited to these parade pace, casual rides which will be 2 hours in length, and under 5 miles. See the schedule at http://www.bybicycles.com. + 1 !!!
Nice to see the interest in doing bike valet parking for events on the Decatur Square and Bicycle South is glad to be a co-sponsor. As far as location, last I heard from the Arts Festival folks was that the parking location would be in the N. McDonough turnaround somewhere near Eddie’s Attic. But I’m checking on that.
You are correct Fred. The map in the Decatur Arts Festival program shows the Bike Valet at the top of N. McDonough. See you all at the festival!
OK STG, stroller valet it is! Well, maybe stroller check room. Will that work? And not for the arts fest, but how bout for the book fest?
Why would you need a stroller valet? The whole point of bringing a stroller is to have somewhere to put your kid/s, and all the associated stuff you need for them.
I was going to ask a similar question.
Was wondering the same thing – I am married with no children – but was afraid if I posed that question I would suffer the wrath of decatur parents!
The idea for the stroller check room at the book fest is for use while kids and their attending parents are seated to enjoy a presentation or reading. The strollers can crowd the aisles , making it difficult for others to reach available seating and even possibly becoming a hindrance if any area needs to be cleared out quickly.
What do you think? Good idea or just silly?
I think any idea that keeps strollers out of my way is a good one -
Reminds me of the stroller corrals at Disney World which are a great idea.
Oakhurst could put together a World Class Stroller Derby team.
