UPDATE: Four Decatur Residents Named Guggenheim Fellows
Decatur Metro | April 16, 2012UPDATE: Moira writes in and notes her husband, Stavros Garoufalidis (mathematics, GA Tech), was also named a Guggenheim Fellow. That makes four Decatur residents, who received the honor this year!
Tonio writes in…
The 2012 Guggenheim Fellows were announced today in the NYT, and Decatur made a strong show. There are three fellows from Decatur, which seems remarkable to me, and perhaps it’s worth a note in the blog. They are…
Tonio Andrade (Emory)
Douglas Flamming (Georgia Tech)
Judith Evans Grubbs (Emory)
Tonio also sent along the ad in the New York Times announcing the winners, which you can view HERE. All three recipients are history professors at their respective universities.
I do believe I had Professor Flamming at Tech. Although my memory is a little fuzzy from that period, as I recall he was really good.
Impressive feat for our little village.
Congrats to all, especially family friend Tonio Andrade!

Make it 4. Stavros Garoufalidis at Georgia Tech: http://www.gf.org/fellows/17213-stavros-garoufalidis
I’d wondered about Garoufalidis! Is he a Decatur resident too? He’s listed in the Guggenheim materials as based in Atlanta, but that could just be because he listed his GT office as his official address.
Hi Rick — our kids are playing together as I type this….
heard they had a fun time.
p.s. you’re not allowed to leave Decatur–it would totally hose our GPK metric.
4 square miles. 4 Guggenheim fellows.
A new Decatur motto!
that’s one Guggenheim Fellow per 5,000 Decatur residents, which means NYC, the intellectual and cultural capital of the world would have . . . lemme see here . . . .um, 1678 Guggenheim Fellows!
oh, wait . . .

Yawn. Aren’t these fellowships for the arts and humanities? Basically for people who can’t otherwise support themselves in the free market? I mean, it’s not like I use it anymore, but at least even I got a PhD in a real science.

The Guggenheim Fellowships are nice, in that support both the arts and sciences, jazz musicians to biologists. Kudos to all winners.
