Revolution Doughnuts Opening on West College Avenue
Decatur Metro | March 10, 2012Man has this little strip of shops come alive in the past couple years!
The Little Hen Bakeshop – a Decatur Farmer’s Market regular – is opening up Revolution Doughnuts, next to Ale Yeah! and Avellino’s Pizza at 908 West College Ave in Decatur.
According to Revolution’s Facebook page, the owners are planning on a May open and describes the cafe/production kitchen as…
We are starting a doughnut revolution in the south – returning to a time when doughnuts were simple and tasty – made from scratch with real food ingredients – without all the pre-fab mixes, funky oils, preservatives, fillers, or stabilizers that the big doughnut chains use. In addition to our regular menu we will also have vegan and gluten free treats – check our FB and Twitter feed for menu updates.
Lots more great background on this new shop in the DHS 3ten.
Thanks to Lump for the heads-up in FFAF!
Hell yeah; next to ale yeah! Vegan donuts are a rare treat for my egg allergic kid. he had his first donut ever last week at a vegan bakery new york city
Gah! All I have to do is walk across the railroad tracks for vegan doughnuts? That’s super dangerous. (Both because of trains and because of doughnuts…)
Yes, okay, but my heart belongs to Krispy Kreme.
About time we stood up to Big Donut. Go Decatur!
Please, please, please say Revolution Donuts will make your famous ginger chair scones!
So exciting! And WW…in case you didn’t know, there’s a vegan bakery in Kirkwood 5 minutes away (dulcevegan.com). So yummy– you’d never know it was vegan!
You had me at “do” but you lost me at “veg.”
Doughnuts Yeah!!!
If I’m right about this, I’ve met the owner’s husband Joel of Aikido Decatur (he visited our preschool a few weeks ago). Love that this family runs two small, local businesses in Decatur. Having businesses like this in town and having the pleasure of supporting them is one of my favorite things about Decatur! Plus, Revolution is right across the street from our preschool. Could be dangerous for my waistline, but I can’t wait!
hmmm…donuts, pizza, beer.
The Homer Simpson trifecta!
Ha! Another great nickname! ” I’m heading over to Homer Simpson plaza, do you need anything?”
But where does one park at Homer Simpson Plaza? I won’t park on the grass by the RR tracks. Don’t mind walking at all, but how to the neighbors feel about people parking on their street?
Just curious…Why won’t you park on the grass by the RR tracks?
Don’t feel comfortable parking on the grass and crossing with small kids, just prefer to park on the other side. No one has said anything about parking in the neighborhood, but I was just wondering. I know down the street at Renfroe neighbors have made a big deal about parents parking in front of their houses.
I forget to factor in escorting little kids, agree crossing College along that stretch can be an exercise in nerve. (Would love to see a speed trap between the MARTA station and Mead Rd., if that’s possible.) I agree with Marty’s comment. As long as streetside parkers are not littering, blocking driveways, making noise at inappropriate times, etc. then homeowners should not complain.
I think backing out into traffic on College is at least as dangerous, or more so, than crossing the street to the grassy area. Also, I frequently park on the street around the corner and have never had any issues.
Why would you be hesitant park on a public street? It is yours as much as the person who’s house is in front of it. Decatur should be utilizing street parking more so as to not require property owners to have to build large on-site parking facilities. It also encourages more neighborhood “walk to” type development that we all like to have in our neighborhoods.
+1.
seems to be an epidemic of this no parking in front of my house, noticed it at sons soccer practice last Sunday at 4/5 academy a row of no parking signs on 5th ave, kept looking for yellow paint or something official saying why – public streets last I checked are PUBLIC
you can park there despite angry old men….by the way 1 vote for Homer Simpson plaza….
At the risk of being misunderstood–i.e., I agree that parking on streets around FAVE is public and FAVE area is no different than any of the other streets in Decatur with a school; a school benefits a neighborhood in terms of community, safety, and real estate value more than it inconveniences it–I do think there are occasional special circumstances:
– At least one of the homes across from FAVE has handicapped residents who need good access to the street
– Some homes have not gotten their mail because the mailboxes were blocked–you cannot blame folks for wanting their mail delivered
– Not sure if any of the homes are without a driveway and thus need the street parking for their own vehicles
How is it that the street (?King’s Highway?) next to Renfroe gets to have parking restricted just to residents? Because the homes are without driveways? If so, 5th Ave homes without driveways ought to have the same accomodation made for them.
I think those are good points regarding 5th Ave/FAVE.
If that’s the reason, it would seem like all of Melrose Ave or most of Lenox Place should have resident restricted parking then.
If ppl are parking in Lenox Place, where are they headed? Are there lots of businesses around there?
I would like to chime in here if I may. I am a resident on Kings Hwy right near the school. Since the gym has been built, there has been a huge increase in street parking. We’re not objecting to the street parking. We understand the need for it BUT a lot of the homes right near the school don’t have driveways. If we come home and there is an event going on, lots of times parking is scarce on the street. I know for a fact that some driveways have been blocked. Our car has been boxed in several times. Once someone actually parked right on our bumper.
We’re asking to try to use the school side of the street once the parking lots are full. Also, the front parking lot of the school, often times isn’t being used.
We love the activities going on. We are just asking for some courtesy when parking in front of our houses.
That seems reasonable. But there isn’t a restriction on non-resident parking on King’s Highway by Renfroe? I thought I’d heard school staff on the PA system announcing that no one should park on King’s Highway. Either way, I can understand residents without driveways needing to park near their homes whether they live on King’s Highway or Fifth Ave. or anywhere in Decatur. Especially the elderly and disabled, folks with little kids in tow, folks with groceries, folks dealing with inclement weather……..which is probably most residents. And blocked driveways or mailboxes should not be allowed. The trick is how to do this in a way that is fair to residents but still encourages family and community participation in the schools. Another reason for that tunnel under, or pedestrian bridge over, the tracks. More folks would walk or bike……….
The East side of the street (the school side) isn’t restricted…just the residential side. And again, I want to express …we’re not objecting to the parking…just looking for some courtesy!
KMT nails it. It’s a courtesy thing. If ppl are going to park on the street, in front of other ppls’ houses, don’t block their driveways, don’t block them in, etc.
Regarding the differences around town about “resident only” parking … I don’t know the process, but I’m guessing the street residents approach the city and ask for a resident only parking zone. We have a friend who lives right behind Taqueria, and as y’all probably know, it’s resident only over there (and I get that, but it’s still frustrating when the lot is full, the meter spots are full, and street parking isn’t an option – at least it’s not all that often). It sounds like some streets near schools, stores, etc. are resident only, and some aren’t. If the ppl without resident only parking want it, they need to approach the city – NOT berate others for parking on the PUBLIC street.
I guess this is a nice problem to have, in a sense. We’re lucky to have local stores that ppl really want to frequent, and we’re also lucky that these stores are within neighborhoods and are within walking distance for some. Same with schools. It’s great that they are neighborhood schools.
Unfortunately, the Decatur postal workers are not fond of obstructed mailboxes (which I can understand). Cars park in front of my house all the time as I live on a busier street and churches/restaurants, etc are easily accessible. I don’t mind at all because I have a driveway and a garage, BUT there have been occasions where I went to get our mail and instead of any, their are pre-made post-it like notes on the random car blocking MY mailbox saying “please do not park in front of your mailbox. We cannot deliver your mail”. I want to scream, “I did not park in front of my own mailbox!!!” and I’m sure the person who gets that post-it on their car who doesn’t know us could care less that they prevented us from getting our mail that day.
So…I don’t mind street parking, BUT don’t block people’s mailboxes! That is annoying.
Once again – common courtesy! Ppl shoud definitely NOT block the mailboxes so that residents can’t get their mail!!! Poor sugarmama. That IS annoying. And rude.
I’m OK with temporary and occasional on-the-street parking, but i dislike neighbors using the street for permanent / regular parking instead of their driveway. Although I understand that 1920’s – 1940’s houses and driveways were not built with 2 and 3 car families in mind. Mostly an aesthetic thing for me, but also a safety / traffic flow issue.
I don’t have a driveway – so I have to park on the street.
In addition, most studies say that street parking slows cars down and makes streets safer than streets where there is no street parking.
Haha! I have a reason for not parking on residential streets!! The very large, angry, belligerent, and I suspect fairly insane man who lost. His. Mind. when my husband and three yr old dtr parked in front of his house so we could walk to a festival at Oakhurst community gardens! We couldn’t figure out why he was telling us “you can’t park there”…..at first we thought he was pointing out, as courtesy (albeit in an angry tone) that we were in a no parking zone….no, turns out we were parking in HIS no parking zone. Note: this guy had an empty driveway he could have parked on. Meanwhile……
I was JUST lamenting the fact that there isn’t a single place in Decatur where one can go grab a dozen doughnuts, etc. to “bring to the office”. I just hope the doughnuts aren’t five bucks each!!!
Nope, the yummy chocolate or caramel cake donuts are $2.00 at the Decatur Farmer’s Market on Saturdays!
He should take a lesson from the guy on Adair and plant a couple of crappy old bikes in front of his house each day.
I always wondered why those bikes were parked on the street on Adair. They always seemed so random. Now I know… thanks.
Nobody should take a lesson from him unless they’re looking for someone teaching Rude and Selfish 101. I don’t care how many people continue to say how he’s actually a nice guy, yadda, yadda, yadda. In the end, what he is doing is selfish and I see nothing there to admire.
Correct me if I’m wrong and misusing the space, but there is a gravel parking lot at the end of Homer Simpson Plaza, on the end where Isabella’s Cafe used to be. I park there all the time and don’t have to worry about crossing the busy street with my 3-year old, getting smacked in the rear whilst backing out from a storefront spot, etc…
Regardless, Vive la Revolution!!
I believe that gravel lot belongs to the building on the corner of College and Cambridge. It looks like a house, but I’m pretty sure its a small business of some sort.
You are correct. Currently a law office, I think, or some similarly professional endeavor. It’s really an ideal situation for shared parking, since the office closes around 5 or 6, right when pizza/beer traffic starts to pick up.
I wonder if any businesses in that strip actually lease use of the lot or if it’s just customers taking advantage of the fact that nobody’s there.
How long before Ale Yeah! tosses a donut in the Randall? A growler of custom-flavored maple bacon stout please!
Parking, schmarking– I’ll perch on the ding-danged roof to get at those doughnuts. (And as a counter-point to Patrick’s lovely suggestion at 11:04 am, I propose a beer-batter doughnut as a shout-out to Ale Yeah– cross marketing genius, I tell ya!)
I walk by there on my way to MARTA everyday. I am in serious trouble. Yum.
I got to haul off a bunch of debris from this place this morning and got to see inside/what the plans are. Going to be good stuff.
