Midway Woods Finally Gets Its Traffic Light
Decatur Metro | February 9, 2012@HausZweiHomes sends in this little report via Twitter…
Midway & S Candler-After 3 yrs of construction, moving bridge & roads Midway Woods has new traffic light
That would be HERE for those who are geographically challenged like me.
It will look better with a couple of pairs of sneakers hanging over it.
“It will look better with a couple of pairs of sneakers hanging over it”
Yes, because Midway Woods is just so overrun with gangs. (sarcasm)
Sneakers on wires indicate gang activity? Not where I grew up. It indicated mischievous kids with good aim.
Not sure what shoe tossing really signifies, but I always liked the scene in the 1997 movie, Wag the Dog, where Robert DiNiro and Dustin Hoffman were doing it.
Paranoia runs deep.
Into your life it will creep.
I always heard that it had something to do with the end of a school year. No gang affiliation at all…
“these shoes indicate sites at which drugs are sold or worse yet, gang turf,”
Even Wikipedia has an entry for hanging shoes.
You always learn something new on DM!! Note that Wikipedia also indicates that the military, Scots, kids at the end of the school year, Boy Scouts, and others also do it. And the references to gang activity are from around 2003. I wonder if gang members are more likely to use text messaging now….
I don’t think FMFats was making any reference to gang activity. There are shoes hanging from wires in all parts of Decatur. There was a tree at Georgia Tech in the 70’s that had so many shoes hanging from it they had to cut the tree down. Besides, that intersection is not in Midway Woods.
shoefiti!
I absolutely hate shoes hanging on power or phone lines. What a waste of a pair of shoes. There’s a pair of cleats that have been hanging in Winnona Park neighborhood for at least a year now. I know plenty of kids who could actually use those cleats but instead they are perfectly useless, trapped on a power line. Drives me nuts.
Speaking of this intersection, does anyone know if they’re installing a concrete island in the middle of the new bridge?
Yes they are, and it will have a shoe store on it.
Hey Chadly –
I was thinking the same thing (as well as maybe a concrete median just north of their inbetween the yellow lines heading north on candler right after midway road).
I don’t believe it is being done but think that would be a great idea.
I emailed the C Hugh (Saxon) about it and then contacted Dave (Junger) about it to see what/if anything can be done from the City’s perspective. I am waiting to hear back from Dave as it is my understanding that has been coordinating the efforts with DOT on South
Candler and East College.
More to come (hopefully).
.
Excellent! Nice, Brian! Let us know how it goes!
Thanks Brian. Seems like I saw an architectural rendering here on DM at some point but I can’t find it now. That drawing made it seem like there would be an island.
In any case, I’m just glad to see this construction wrapping up. It’s been an eyesore for far too long. The new configuration of turn lanes seems to have calmed traffic some.
Just got an email from Dave Junger (the people that work for the City are fantastic!) – he wanted to think about it and maybe ask the police department to conduct a limited traffic (speed and volume study).
Keep in mind that Candler is a State route (GA 155) and so GDOT has the say-so on whatever happens.
Does anyone know why this took such an unbelievable (to me) long time to complete? It has been under construction since I moved here and it doesn’t appear to be that big of a project to my eyes. The Empire State Building was built in just over 13 months!
It was a GDOT project.
That’s a gorgeous photo of the blue sky. Did you use a filter?
I think it’s the blue tinting at the top of a windshield.
And the local police are settting there nailing folks for still running those lights.
