Re: Good Growth DeKalb: Imagine a lawsuit against a business for creating traffic, winning business in a competitive environment, and the addition of jobs.
This may be unpopular but I can’t wait until Suburban Plaza is torn down and replaced. Would I love a park or a garden center or a merry go round? Yes but we are getting a WalMart. Fine. Bring it on. The sooner those junky stores get torn down the better.
Re junky stores: I agree that the current Plaza is run-down,uninviting, and under-utilized. But some of the stores are staples–Hancock Fabrics, Suburban Frames (or something similar), That Pottery Place, not to mention Surburban Bowl.
I agree that there are several stores that I hope can remain open after remodeling. I will not be sorry to see the thrift store and the mattress store be torn down.
Junky? Nah. I like our collection of neighborhood stores and believe that Walmart will invigorate Suburban Plaza with more shoppers and increased opportunities for smaller tenants to thrive.
Some of my favorite, most character-filled serving platters are from Decatur Estates, a quaint place for browsing and reminiscing. And I’m in love with the exotically patterned $6 Pashmina scarves at Mirage. What great gifts!
Big Lots never fails me when I underestimate my visiting mother’s sinusitis and need an extra pillow, pronto. (And the food aisles turn up unexpected delights, like sparkling Irish spring water.) I doubt that they’ll stay, however, because of the similarity in merchandise.
And, at Last Chance (which, sadly, will go), I made a world-class thrift triumph last year, snagging a barely used $200 silk dress for a mere $18. (I’ll continue to ignore the fact that my husband said, “It kinda looks like a clown outfit.”)
$4,000? I am sure WM just pissed its pants.
DawgFan,
Have you ever had anything nice to say or contributed a positive comment on this blog? Your MO is old, and it is turning people off from Decatur Metro. It seems like other frequent commenters — even contrarians and conservatives — can find something to enjoy (other than the opportunity to snark) and make a point to contribute to this blog community in ways that enrich us all. I really hope you will take this comment to heart. It would be good to get to know another side of you.
Go see today’s FFAF to see if I have ever made a positive comment or contribution. I do all the time. I have also gotten into an argument on occasion and have admittedly taken things too far a couple of times, but it takes two to tango as they say. I don’t hold a grudge, but apparently you do.
Let me add this – whether you believe it or not, when I express an opinion that is contrary to yours, I am making a positive contribution. I have certainly learned a few things from others here, and appreciate their opinions (at least until some morally superior SOB talks down to me or others who disagree with him).
BTW, I think its absolutely hilarious that a group is bragging about raising $4,000 to fight WM. Why can’t I express that?
I was actually going to say that’s about 10 billable hours or 11 minutes of legal work….
I would’ve taken it a step farther and said that wouldn’t even cover WM’s lawyers dry cleaning bills for their pissed–on pants after laughing so hard…
It’s not that I agree or disagree with you. You’re just not very nice.
Seriously? You chose that particular comment to pick a fight about? I’m not saying Dawg never makes me roll my eyes, but you’re not exactly elevating the level of discourse yourself.
DM! Where are you? I have been crying all morning over this vicious personal attack.
Turned Off, are you kidding? I (and apparently many others) found it funny and I pointed out the humor. How in the hell am I being mean? What is the point of your post other than to insult me?
I thought it was funny, too. Turned Off, I think you are coming across as not so nice. There are a lot of readers that appreciate witty, sometimes silly observations, whatever their political backgrounds are. Personal attacks have been running off some of my favorite folks; how we miss DTR and others.
Turned Off:
I can guarantee you that was the first thought that popped into about 80% of the heads of the folks who read that byline. It was for me.
Perhaps they should do this http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2012/02/patterson-hood-mike-mills-of-rem-record-walmart-pr.html to raise more money.
Thanks for the link to the song and video. It was pretty and I enjoyed it but I don’t understand why the video didn’t have more shots of downtown Athens. It isn’t all railroad trestles and a lone coffee shop, and isn’t that the point?
Based on the only conversation I’ve ever had with Mike Mills, I’d surmise that having a point may not be his strong suit. Of course, it was late night at Foxy’s in Athens and there may have been some chemical interference on both sides
Regarding the Emory article above, the intent of this was not to say that men & women could live together, it was to provide a “gender neutral” housing option. The impetus for the gender-neutral housing option was to be able to provide campus housing for transgendered or other students in the LGBTQI (I = Intersex, if you didn’t already know) community who might not otherwise be comfortable in a single-sex housing environment.
Should have read the article closer, thank you for correcting me. Changed above.
LGBTQI
There’s got to be a way to rearrange these letters to produce a pronounceable acronym.
How about BGQILT? Pronounced Big Quilt. Kind of cosy sounding, no?
Sitting here in my office, trying not to holler out loud laughing at that Portlandia “music video”…*wiping eyes* Ah, that’s some funny isht!
comedy gold. that show is freaking great.
Next week I’m totally floating a post that asks, “How can Decatur be more like the 1890s?”
You do realize the first thing that will occur to many is “stop using computers,” right?
That would be so hip! I can’t wait to create a Decatur Metro olde-timey newspaper!
And thus we come full circle to the question of what a viable print-publishing model looks like these days.
Everything that rises must converge.
They want to spend state and federal tax dollars to subsidize that toll lane? Sounds ridiculous to me. Is this a new gas tax, or will it use revenue targeted for other purposes?
Not a new tax – stolen from other GDOT projects. Heaven forbid that the legislatue would ever increase any tax.
DM,
Good job beating Gawker to the Portlandia sketch. I don’t think the 1890’s is going far enough back though. Someone from Portland will eventually go on a Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown sightseeing trip, and then welcome to the 1690’s. Harpsichords and typhoid will be all the rage.
I can’t wait to get some cured meats and hand-carved ice cubes in Decatur!
