CSD New Student Registration for Next Year Starts Today!
Decatur Metro | February 1, 2012Assistant Superintendent Thomas van Soelen forwards this soft-copy of a postcard that went out to Decatur households a couple weeks back, reminding soon-to-be CSD parents that they can begin registering their children – who plan to attend Decatur schools next year, but currently do not attend – today at the Central Office at Westchester.
You certainly cannot say that CSD does not communicate about school registration anymore! The only folks who could miss the multiple modalities of communication are folks who haven’t moved here yet.
I went to the web page on that form, and the school is requiring a social security card as required documentation. I wonder where that requirement comes from as it would seem to conflict with the mandate to educate any resident child, regardless of immigration status. An undocumented immigration wouldn’t have a social security card.
Based on concerns expressed within this blog and by the school board, I’m surprised that the school is only asking for information about children who will be attending next year. For planning purposes, it would seem helpful to know how many children are within the district who didn’t attend this year but will in future years.
Don’t remember ever having to show a Social Security card for either child. Isn’t it enough to provide the number? Aren’t there digital ways of verifying numbers now? And aren’t the hardcopy cards easy to falsify? I would need a couple of days notice to remember where the original Social Security cards are for my children. In my home lockbox? Credit union security box? Husband’s files? Hospital and vaccination folder?
We had to provide ours many years ago for Prek. Since then I would assume it was included in the file and just passed from school to school.
I wonder if DHS is planning to use the “e-verify” system of INS? Is this required by HB 87?
Ok, if you look at this correctly, the only kids parents will register are those who are in pre-K. Explain the reason why multiple copies of these post cards were printed and given to kids. This could have been posted online, in the newsletter, on the blogs, in the Decatur Focus since this is going out to residents only.
I think the idea is to remember to register younger siblings who are entering CSD for the first time. Or pass the info on to neighbors. CSD got tons of criticism in the past when parents new to CSD missed the registration deadline and then their children were in danger of not getting a spot in their neighborhood school. Even established CSD parents can forget these things, especially those with a large spread between the ages of their children. Our neighbor has two children ten years apart and just about everything changed in CSD between when her first and second entered school.
My son is going to Kindergarten in the fall but we have to register because we’re new to Decatur. I never received that postcard so I’m, again, so glad to have this blog for information.
Done. And sob. I can’t believe my teeny tiny baby is starting kindergarten!
You will blink an eye and your teeny baby will be applying for a driver’s license… it’s true!
