You may or may not recall that Decatur’s old-is-new-again Courtyard By Marriott reopened to the public today. Scott snapped this photo for you armchair hotel interior enthusiasts.
Looks a LOT like the Holiday Inn’s “courtyard.” Brown color scheme – ugh!
I was also thinking that it looked similar but didn’t want to be the first person saying that. Maybe there’s only so much you can do with the building design–rooms built around a hollow inside. Maybe it would have taken a major rebuild to truly renovate.
I don’t know. I don’t think it would take a major rebuild to add some, oh I don’t know, color!
Then again, at least they didn’t “modernize” it by painting everything black like the W at Colony Square.

I was in there yesterday and this photo probably doesn’t do it justice. Sure, there will always be subjective ideas about color but, I gotta say, the new set-up was a vast improvement. There’s a solid bar in there now and what looked like a Starbucks-like counter. Lots of hanging out and laptop meeting configurations as well.
Basically, it’s now much better suited to the needs of the business or convention traveller, which is exactly what Decatur needs to help build our broader reputation and keep a steady flow of itinerant customers passing through our businesses.
I think I’ve seen Daren posting here about the unrecognized value to Decatur this renovation presents. I’m with him.
Good to hear that it’s an improvement. I have to admit that it really doesn’t matter what I think since I only use it for the Santa breakfast, Book Festival events, and when there’s a home power outage of > 12 hours. There’s some standardization of amenities that has to happen for this to be a Courtyard and the ever-so-set in their ways ‘rents will appreciate that.
I’m with you Scott. Looks like a vast improvement. Looking forward to popping in there and checking it out myself.
I wonder what magic they used to get the construction finished on time? How often does that happen?
We should never forget that quality of opinion is more important than quantity. I have trouble remembering this myself sometimes, but it’s dang true…and too often cast off as being counterpoint to our sacred “all men are created equal”.
It’s not. They’re completely complementary.

An immediate reaction to a photograph is of different opinion-al worth than the first-hand observations of the head of a major Decatur festival.
It has nothing to do with positive vs. negative.
And let me also point out that I believe this was also a critique about myself. All too often people seem to give high levels of credence to this site due to sheer quantity. I’ve probably even benefited from it to some extent. Now that’s talking out both sides of your mouth!
Human is as human does, I suppose.
Well, since I’m not the head of a major Decatur festival, I guess I should keep my opinions to myself.
