Bike Rack: Want!
I love that bike rack, but I hate partial shelves. Make a full shelf version, and I might buy one.
That rack would bend spokes.
that’s what he said
It looks good as long as you don’t bike in the dirt, rain, or mud patches.
A shout out to my HS History teacher in 1988, Dr Flocks! Glad to see she is doing something great for our community, instead of giving detentions to 17 yr old punks…
I also appreciated her article. I myself am also public transit dependent. As she wrote “effective public transit is dependent on safe pedestrian facilities.” I really appreciate the PEDS campaign!
Brewhouse? Are these the L5P people or are they just cribbing a name from a bar 4 miles away?
Same folks.
Same owner.
The biggest gripe I have about this place is the food. It’s not great, no matter what they’ve named it. I live within walking distance, but I still drive into Decatur for my pub food.
I wonder how different it will be.

This place has never been anything but some kind of concept wannabe bar and it looks as if that will continue.
It won’t continue if they fully adopt the L5P Brewhouse’s menu…or at least its greatest hits.
Every time the subject of a restaurant comes up, someone says they didn’t like the food. I’m going to break the mold and say that I didn’t mind the food at James Joyce, the problem was that there was absolutely no “Irish Pub” feel to the place. It’s got tile floors, metal chairs, no booths. Sure, there’s soccer on, and the patio is nice, and they’ve got Guinness (but who doesn’t?). It was like going to an Irish Pub in a strip mall in Sarasota. Which really doesn’t stack up to the Mac MacGee’s and Steinbeck’s options we’ve got nearby.
I went when it was briefly named the Hail Mary, and just the additions of TVs and the name change made it feel like it had found itself. They had also added an Irish Cheeseburger which was ridiculously good.
I will have to check out the latest incarnation during an EPL match. Who’s in for this Monday at 3 PM? Wigan v Man City, on a day off.
Maybe! Of course, it’ll be a crappy game (in American foootball terms, Wigan-Man City would be like Alabama-Vanderbilt or the Falcons versus any playoff team). I’m also a little worried about the Brewhouse folks taking it back over. Not that I don’t like going to the Brewhouse – in fact I’m there weekly for trivia on Wednesdays – but their website seems to have been hacked and redirects to some Russian site (been doing that at least since last week)!
If they would just get their heads out of their arses and put up some dartboards, I could see the Avondale Brewhouse becoming a regular destination.
The Next Stop Decatur blog always seems to have great old shots of Decatur, but I can’t bear looking at it. No offense, but IMHO someone needs to help the blogmaster redesign that blog and organize the info in a more visually appealing manner.
I couldn’t agree more! A lot of those images literally hurt my eyes. It’s almost as if they try to find bad color combinations.

Folks keep bashing the food of the old Jame Joyce pub…. although I kept my choices confined to the Irish items (bangers/mash, fish and chips, shepherd pie etc.) I always found their food really great. But to each his own… clearly something wasn’t working… they closed up.
Here, here! I liked the food, too. It had gone a bit downhill over the years, but I found it still solid for what it was. It’s never been a foodie destination, but that’s okay (although I would love a true foodie restaurant to come to AE!) because it always delivered a good plate of comfort food. I hope the Brewhouse folks will take this opportunity to improve it, but I have been led to believe that is already underway. I read somewhere that the Corner Pub chef has been lured there. In any case, I believe the Brewhouse folks owned JJ and are taking back over now that Hail Mary threw in the towel. Personally, I’m relieved. I never made it in to try the food while it was Hail Mary, but the hype they put out about it didn’t appeal to me and didn’t seem to play on what was worth saving about JJ. I would like to see it move more towards the Brewhouse image.
bike rack would make more sense on the wall
a. because of the rack, the bookcase would have to be wall-anchored anyway
a.5 may as well put the rack on a wall stud and BDWI
b. the bike sticks out into the room, way
c. that kind of rack doesn’t ‘bend spokes’
