Ooh, I was there. That and a Goldwater rally way back then are the only political rallies I ever attended. Was Goldwater at Suburban Plaza? Does anyone remember?
And this is what started the Mike Florence calls that went something like, “And Decatur will be defending the Bill Clinton end zone.” I really miss him announcing DHS games.
I had just returned to Decatur, had a house of Ponce de Leon Terrace, and was thrilled to walk to the Square on a beautiful fall day to see Bill introduced by Michael Stipp of REM. Remember he went on to beat the Republicans in a big win later that fall.
Mr. Bill Funk, principal at DHS during the 1990s, took the picture. My son and I were standing nearby. Mr. Funk met Clinton after the rally in a room located in the stadium that had been renovated for an Outward Bound program.

I was here in 1992 at the rally. Wild how far things have come. 20 years ago???

I remember Michael Stipe, too.
I’m in that pic somewhere too. I never really liked him until that day — I was for Paul Tsongas at that point. But Bill got my first ever vote!
You, me, Catron, Fisher and a few others are in there!
Wow, it was even Halloween. Bet my long, lost friend, DTR dressed up as a dem.
I was there too! Walked to the square with now 19 year old in a stroller! We have a picture of her crying at the rally.
Well…if I was 19 and you put me in a stroller…I’d cry too.

That looks like the back of Mary Alice Kemp’s head (the woman in the blue jeans with the blue shirt thrown over her shoulder).
That’s what I thought too and I didn’t even know her then. Funny how some things, e.g. body posture and hair/head shape, don’t change…
