Decatur Metro | December 13, 2011Hot off the presses from the State Superintendent of Schools…
State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge named the 2011 Georgia Schools of Excellence in Student Achievement today, honoring 26 schools that have shown the greatest improvement or highest achievement across the state. Each of these schools will receive a $1,000 check from Georgia Natural Gas to be used however they wish.
…The Georgia Schools of Excellence are honored in two categories. Qualifying schools are chosen from each Congressional District in the following categories:
– Top 10%: Schools that are in the top 10 percent in Georgia as measured by assessments in reading and mathematics.

Yeah, Clairemont!
Once again, Clairemont gets all the love. Don’t forget about good ‘ol Potter Street EL. That’s a Decatur School too!
Uh…that’s in Bainbridge
Decatur County
As for the top 10 list, coming in at #4 and #5 are Oak Grove and Morningside. Both excellent schools in well-heeled neighborhoods. Tell me I’m wrong, but there is no small link between income, parental involvement, and achievement. Neither of those ‘hoods are cheap and I imagine a larger percentage of families than average in those ‘hoods can have 1 parent focusing on the kids and the local school.
Here’s to working towards all of the CSD schools being in the top 10 !
It looks like those lists are not top ten lists, but the top school in each congressional district for the category. City of Decatur is in the 5th.
The other thing that hits me is that there’s the “Greatest Gains” and there’s the “Top 10%” category. Not sure if a school can be honored in both categories. The best situation for a “Greatest Gains” school would be if it was also in the Top 10% by achievement scores. If a school went from the bottom level to the 50th percentile of achievement, it’s a great gain but there’s still a long way to go. (Not saying that’s what happened to Clairemont.)
I think the Top 10% list is a little confusing. Is it saying that it just so happens that each of the 13 districts has a member of the Top 10%? Wouldn’t it be very likely that a district might have multiple schools in the Top 10? If I’m reading it right, then I guess it’s just listing the school with the highest score for that particular district, and any other school that may be in the Top 10% doesn’t get listed?
I guess it’s good that each district has at least one school in the Top 10%.
I just think it’s a strange way to list the schools, for both categories actually, but maybe it’s just me that was confused. That could certainly be the case.
I love CSD!!!!!!
I am so proud of our awesome Clairemont kids. Our amazing teachers and staff give 110% every day and I am so thankful for all they do. Clairemont rocks!
