Avondale Expedites Sunday Sales, Beer Growler Open This Sunday
Decatur Metro | November 16, 2011Patch reported yesterday that instead of waiting for already scheduled meetings to go through the necessary three readings of the Sunday alcohol sales amendment in Avondale Estates, Mayor Ed Rieker has rushed the process in order for the city’s businesses to sell alcohol this coming Sunday, November 20th.
Lo and behold, the Beer Growler in Avondale just sent out an email this morning alerting followers that they will be pouring this coming Sunday. The email claims they’ll be the first craft beer store in Georgia open on Sundays.
Decatur is expected to allow Sunday sales starting next Sunday, November 27th. We’ll know for sure after this Monday’s city commission meeting, though it’s little more than a formality at this point. I sure hope Growlie the Growler shows up to show his support!
Whoo-Hoo!!
Almost brings a tear to my eye…. right here in little ole Avondale – first in the state to sell on Sunday! I’ve been cursing this law since I moved to Atlanta in 1985 and now I am proud to say the city I live in will be the first to sell.
The first growler, maybe, but Winder beat everybody by starting last Sunday. They had that built in to their resolution and didn’t have to pass another one.
One word – Winder ( and in the background…sounds of crickets)
Avondale wins! Take that, Decatur!
Ha!
Yes, it is awesome – but unfortunately Decatur wins in pretty much every other category related to food and drink! It’s like baby brother just gave older brother a kick in the shin as he walks towards his car and drives off with his girlfriend.
We win in charcuterie, too (Pine Street Market). And that might be about it.
Yup.
Here is a big salute to Rusty and Pine Street Market!
Where is the pine st market? I tried to find it via the address on their website one day a year or so ago, but didn’t see anything with any signage at/near the address? looked like a strip of offices or something?
Or maybe they just didn’t have any signs up then?
#4A Pine Street, Avondale Estates. Yes, the exterior is plain.
+1 million
Beer Growlers are just about the single best reason to have changed this law (other than that whole free enterprise arguement) since a fresh growler is a great growler and perfect for NFL watching.
Yes, must not forget The Beer Growler – thanks for coming to Avondale!
Rumor has it that East Point is also expediting things to allow sales to start this Sunday. Last I checked, though, they do not have a Beer Growler (or anything remotely close)!
Can’t the commissioners and mayor just have a quick conference call and get this done for us as well?
Fairly certain you can wait a couple more weeks. This is not a life or death situation.
Do not sir, bring rationality into this discussion!

I’ll probably go buy a fresh growler, even if it don’t plan on drinking it. (Who am I kidding, it’ll be consumed.) The point for me is similar to Phototrekker. I’ve lived here on and off for 20+ years and this law has always been inane and laden with the stink of hypocrisy. I’ll go get a growler at the growler simply because I can.

I will absolutely be there on Sunday. Also, they (Beer Growler) just put out a deal on Sweet Jack (think Groupon) and Sweet Jack also has a $5.00 off promo code. So for $10.00 you can get a 64 oz. growler filled with any Georgia-brewed beer they offer, plus 4 pint glasses.
The Sweet Jack promo code is FETCHME5
Done and done.
I may have to use this.
Speak for yourself, Bulldog.
Dude.
LOL
I can’t wait to skip church and go buy a growler )
bwah!!!! good one!!
I can’t wait to skip church, go buy a growler, and drink it on the way home in the car.
So I guess just steps one and two would deviate from your normal Sunday routine? har har.
I wonder if any churches will consider serving wine at communion now? Up North, some used to, but I guess it wasn’t legal here.
You must not know any baptists.
I’m assuming you’re jesting. I haven’t ever been to a church that doesn’t have wine at communion. As a matter of fact, several years ago, I participated in a meeting where we had a wine tasting to decide what wine to use.
All the churches I’ve gone to here have served juice. They’re allowed to serve wine? How was that ok before 12:30 PM on Sundays? I guess I just don’t understand Southern Sunday alcohol laws.
My Presbyterian church also only served juice. Which is why I switched to Episcopal services.
Churches serve juice so that any alcoholics in their congregation can take communion without worrying about alcohol. In the Episcopal Church, you can just signal not to drink from the cup. No one knows if you are an alcoholic or just a germ-a-phobe.
Many churches that have wine from communion solve that issue by having red wine and white grape juice. The communicant can ask for the juice if they wish.
And, some churches also have gluten-free communion wafers upon request.
You can “serve” it, you just can’t “sell” it. That’s right, the Catholic Lawyer has these distinctions down…
Ah but remember transubstantiation y’all. ‘Tis no longer wine when eucharisticized!
Yeah, but try telling the police officer that you are not DUI, just high on the Lord Jesus’s blood and see how far that gets you…
LMBAO! “…not drunk, just high on the Lord Jesus’ blood…” has got to be one of my all-time favorite J_T zingers! (Well, thus far– but I don’t know how you’re gonna top that one.)
I don’t even like beer but might just go for the fun of it!
Sherlock’s Wine/Cook’s Warehouse in downtown Decatur starts Sunday sales of wine, beer, and growlers on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Try their creme brulee growler for the holidays!
A great stocking stuffer would be an empty growler bottle, with a Sherlock’s gift certificate attached.
More than just Avondale are getting a jump start according to this AJC article:

I’m just proud AE stepped up to make it happen so quickly! We’ll take a win wherever we can get it! I am disappointed that I won’t be in town to partake on the first Sun. I trust my neighbors in AE and Decatur will make up for my absence!
