Johnny’s Pizza To Reopen as “Rocket 88″
Decatur Metro | August 29, 2011 | 3:17 pmThis is sorta old news – as Tomorrow’s News Today reported it the day we also reported that Johnny’s had closed – but Next Stop…Decatur’s got a picture of the “Rocket 88″ sign hanging over the old Johnny’s location.
Tomorrow’s News Today reported back then that Rocket 88 would be operated by the wife of Johnny’s owner and “it will feature a variety of sandwiches in a casual cafe atmosphere.”
OK, I will be the first to say it – I think it’s about time we start boycotting all restaurants with numbers in their names. Seriously, have we run out of names for restaurants and the only alternative is to number them?!?
You could ask the luxury brand car manufacturers that same question.
True dat. And if it’s possible to boycott something I can’t afford anyway, I’m down with that too!
Bah! Cars are supposed to have numbers, not names. Tell me you drive a BMW 330 and I know the rough size of the car, the basic specs of the engine, etc., because those numbers are intended to convey things about the car. Same is true of Audi A4, S4, A6. Now if you have a Ford Tempo, Lincoln Navigator, or the like, there’s nothing about the name that communicates anything specific about the car. It’s just a marketing gimmick.

That made me laugh and I almost went #1 in my pants.
I did see in the AJC that they got a 97 on their pre-opening health inspection.
Hmmm. This will be the second Johnny’s Pizza that I know of that has shut down and then quickly reopened under a different moniker but essentially same type of food. The other was the Johnny’s over on North Highland Ave over in Old Fourth Ward. Franchise issues, perhaps?
I stopped in yesterday and picked up a menu to take home. It looked good and they deliver. I would not say it has the same type of food as Johnny’s PIZZA, because they don’t serve PIZZA. Anyway looked good, had a cool super cool atmosphere and a small reasonably priced kids menu.
Interesting timing as I believe Sapori di Napoli opens today.
Really? I bet they would’ve gotten more press and I would have known that if they named it “Napoli 314″ or something silly like that!
But seriously, is it really opening. I really like the new Double Zero Napoletana but not enough to regularly drive to Sandy Springs. If this is similar but right here in Decatur, this could be very bad news for my waistline.
Sign on the door yesterday stated 8/29/11 opening and it looked like they were having a friends and family thing last night.
And this is how you alert us?!
And it is completely “yummo!”
A great new addition to our dining scene.
Ha! Yeah, I missed the boat on having my name associated with breaking news.
Few things sound more authoritative than “The Walrus reports…”
has anyone seen the menu?
Just in case you are all to young to remember that Rocket 88 was and Oldsmobile model in the 50’s and 60’s. My dad bought a Rocket 88 in 1950 that was one of the earliest cars with “Hydromatic” transmissions. It was HOT!!
Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston and written by Ike Turner is widely considered to be the first rock & roll hit song.
Had lunch there today and I could not have been more underwhelmed – in fact it was bad. I usually give negative experiences at least one more try; I understand a new restaurant wait staff learning curve, perhaps a goof in the kitchen, but this was downright bad. It wasn’t the service, it was the food itself: I ordered a salad with “grilled” chicken. Pathetic showing of a salad with boiled chicken – devoid of flavor- tossed in buffalo sauce (yes, I knew buffalo sauce involved). Served in annoying little bowl with plastic utensils. Gets worse: childrens’ hotdog? A hot dog cut in half. No side, not even a pickle. Just half a hot dog in a plastic basket. Hubby: a “Joey” deli sandwich. This thing had about 2 slices of deli meat. It was so flat that I was actually stumped. The sandwiches I pack for my little one for school is twice as large. If you say you are a deli, you need to have substantial sandwiches. His side of black eyed pea salad was frigid. Not cool or room temp, downright near freezing point. It was almost insulting how pathetic the portions were (and I dislike supersizing) and even presentation. Staff was nice, but that will never cut it.
I would like to apologize to My name is not suzan I am the owner of Rocket 88 and have been there every day if you would have spoken with me on that day we could have cleared thing up and made the necessary corrections to make you experience a more pleasant one. But thanks to your comments I have reminded my staff to serve a bag of chips with all the children’s sandwiches as well as the half of a footlong hot dog. The blacked eyed pea salad that is intended to be served cold because it is a salad now is served with an option of hot or cold. And yes there is better portion control on the meat potions on every sandwich, also the chicken on the spicy chicken salad is now cut into larger pieces so that it does not look boiled and you can chose between fiery hot or mild sauce. I apologize again and am glad that I could take what seems like slander and turn it into constructive criticism.
Any chance you could link to a copy of the menu? I’m always on the hunt for a good & gooey melty veggie sandwich!
(There’s always bumps when starting a new business. Hope things are soaring now!)
