DeKalb Taxes Going Up 26%
Decatur Metro | July 12, 2011That’s a big ol’ chunk o’ change!
The AJC reports that in a 4-3 decision, DeKalb will raise taxes 26% in the coming fiscal year. According to the news org, that’s roughly a $450 increase on a $300,000 house that’s retained its value in unincorporated DeKalb.
Anyone who didn’t know this was going to happen deserves to be taken out behind the woodshed.
…as long as the line forms after the commissioners and Dekalb County CEO.
Not surprised. So much easier for the elected officials to raise taxes than make government more efficient.
+1
More $ out of my pocketbook & into the waste-ful government coffers. Vote no on all taxes on your ballot, including the school tax renewal this year & the transportation tax next year.
If you are satisfied with the state of transportation in metro Atlanta you should vote against the new tax. Otherwise you might want to consider voting for it.
It seems to me that you are suggesting that doing more of the same will yield a different result. Please explain.
and how do you come to that assessment? seems to me they are suggesting that an underfunded transportation budget may need more funds, no?
Really, ‘really??’, I wish you were here; if you were, it would be easier to remind you of our past.
Anyway, remember some decades back when you came into some money not long after my great uncle had died and his farm operation fell apart… remember? You added a small (20 acre) farm to your portfolio and hired me to manage it – in addition to some nearby properties I was already overseeing – since farming was my business after all.
After a while you came to me with concern about our low yield, and so we grew the operation to 40 acres.
A few more years went by until you came back around to this concern over yield. You explained to me that some fellows’ farms had higher yield and that by that you meant yield per acre. Remember now? I made a convincing case about the relative sizes of operations, about how other farms were scaling up, and how there are structures to all those subsidies and such that largely establish how we needed to operate. After you worked out some complicated financial arrangements, we grew the operation to 80 acres.
Now I know you remember now. At first I thought you were mad about the new fencing, but it was the fertilizer, seed, and labor. We weren’t just buying more; it was also more expensive. You were absolutely furious when I sent over the updated accounting. We renegotiated my fees since the additional acreage had run them up. I stood up for our labor – those fellows have to be able to feed their families; besides, those were the guys that could do the work. So you had to carry most of the costs until we could pass along expenses. Paying back your investment was a longer proposition.
When our situation didn’t improve after a few more years, I was certain you would have fired me if I wasn’t by then married to your cousin.
I sure do miss the good old days.
But I’ll have you know that I’ve put my wages to good use since moving on to greener pastures. Matter of fact I’ve been taking classes and reading an awful lot. I’m learning how there’s a lot of fine tuning that can be done with irrigation, weed control, and such – numbers and formulas One of my teachers says soil management is like science.
Is the bank still trying to foreclose on you? Have you noticed all the farmer’s markets lately?
Using your logic, I wish I had two votes to cast against renewing the school sales tax. I am definitely NOT happy with the performance of the schools. The added penny sales tax that has been in place for years doesn’t seem to have made a difference.
That plan does have the virtue of simplicity. But I don’t see how it will help at all toward solving all the problems. Or any of the problems, for that matter.
step 1. Hire/elect incompetent/lawbreaking officials way above market rate
step 2. Fund expensive law firms to drag out the resultant law suits as long as possible
step 3. Finally pay out fines and damages
step 4. Soak any remaining solvent taxpayers
step 5. Profit
LOL!! Government employee I presume??
Ridgelandistan forgot: Hire consultant with 55% overhead, preferably a major contributor to CEO campaign, second choice relatives.
Sadly no. Just a taxpayer
The more I think about this, the more pissed off I get.
After the Beltway idiots come to a debt limit/taxes compromise that pleases no one and accomplishes nothing, we will also see increased federal taxes. I’m sure state taxes will also go up. Add all this together, and we are in a world of hurt.
So many people (the elderly on fixed incomes, the unemployed, the underemployed etc.) will be devastated by this, further eroding confidence in our leaders and the future of this country. Yeah, it’s that big.
Grrrrrrrrrr.,
Just a point of fact here – the tax increases proposed as part of the deficit reduction plan would only affect the richest people in America. I’m certainly not one of those, so I’m not very worried about federal taxes going up. I also find it highly doubtful that the GA legislature will increase taxes either.
But Token is. That’s how come he agreed to always pick up the tab when we hang at the Chick fil a and Mrs.Token gets treated to Taco Mac on romantic evenings.
Suddenly I feel quite bad that my wife and I went to both Chic-fil-A and Taco Mac last weekend.
I wish I was, Nell. I wish I was.
Of course, “rich” is a matter of perspective, not an absolute.
And Dex, good point about the proposed federal tax increases. Unfortunately, the Dekalb increases hit everyone, not just the wealthy.
The biggest problem with DeKalb taxes is that you can just about guarantee higher taxes = throwing your money into a vortex.
I have no problem with throwing money into a Vortex if it spits out chili cheeseburgers, nacho tots and cheesy cheddar balls.
OMG– I wish I hadn’t just taken a swallow of iced coffee when I read this…now I’m wearing a little of it…
You’re welcome. I’ll be here all week…
What is “rich” now a days to the fed? low 6 figures i think? anyone know the exact amount?
The dems think you are “rich” if you are a productive, job-holding, tax-paying American.
Umm, that’s a bunch of bull.
They came for people who made more than me and I said nothing?
Then they came for me…….
Indeed.
-1 very not cool
Why is that statement “very not cool”?
I think it’s an incredibly distasteful likening.

That phrase has become common to use in many other situations. It also stated communists and trade unionists. Should they be offended as well?
You solicited an explanation for my opinion and received one.
That’s the joy of the internet, people can interpret things however they like.
Granted, my family is of German and Jewish descent, I think they would agree with me. I still think the phrase is applicable to this situation.
I hate when people get offended and I don’t even have the satisfaction of figuring out what actually offended them.
Sorry! It hit me as wrong – not sure if ‘offended’ is the right word – along so many dimensions; I decided to spare everyone an enumeration (and to spare DM any deliberation over moderation also).
DTR, your concerns are shared by many (even if your affiliation is not).
