One of the Remaining Elm Trees on Decatur Square Needs to Be Taken Down

The city’s Linda Harris forwards this note from Decatur’s Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne…

Folks who arrived early to the Decatur Beach Party [a couple of weeks back] were greeted by the site of a large broken limb hanging from one of the remaining Elm Trees on the south lawn of the Old Courthouse adjacent to the bandstand. The city arborist inspected the tree and determined that it is diseased and needs to be removed. We wanted residents to understand why it was being cut down. Many of the Elms that once surrounded the old courthouse succumbed to Dutch Elm disease decades ago and we have been struggling to save the few that remain. This tree has been declining for years. As much as we hate to cut down a large tree, we were already planning to add trees around the south lawn area next fall to assure large growth trees for future generations.

An article in the July/August issue of the Decatur Focus will provide more information on this plan.

These elms have close ties to the preservation of the Old DeKalb Courthouse, as the area garden clubs who came together to save the elms from removal in the 1950s regrouped in the 1960s to prevent the demolition of the Courthouse.

Move Postponed

UPDATE: OK, folks.  We tried out our new home but the server load was much too high.  We’re moving it back to the old home and we’re going to diagnose the problems, before trying to move again.  In the meantime, feel free to resume commenting!

All right.  So I know everyone’s been putting up with how unacceptably crashy and slow DM has been lately.  And for that, I am very grateful!

But, with any luck, that all ends now!  At 1pm we’re moving the site to its new, more reliable home.  That should mean no more error messages, and no more refreshing over and over until you get through.

WillyC and I have been working diligently behind the scenes to get this all set up and hopefully we can pull this off without a hitch.  But for the next 20-30 minutes or so, we recommend you hold your comments or they could be lost in the move.

I was going to wait until tomorrow to do this, but I’ve been annoyed with how slow the site has been today (and every other day the past two weeks), so I just want to bite the bullet and improve the experience right now.  A small price to pay, right?

So everyone gathering their belongings in the color-coded moving boxes and get ready…here we goooo…

Citgone: West Howard Ave gas station now Valero

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has had a rough couple of weeks.

First, he had to fly to Cuba for cancer surgery. (You mean 11 years in power and countless billions in oil revenue, he hasn’t built a decent cancer hospital in Caracas? ¡Qué lástima!). Then, he lost his country’s retail foothold in the tiny yanqui paraíso we call Decatur.

All of which is an unnecessarily confusing way of saying that the Citgo on West Howard Avenue at Atlanta Avenue is changing its retail affiliation. Yesterday, a small construction crew began removing the station’s Citgo markings and replacing them with Valero decor.

Citgoing, going gone.

A better blogger might have walked across the street to ask the station’s owners why they’re leaving Citgo to become a Valero, but why risk getting hit by a car when I can settle for a stupid Hugo Chávez reference?

Large Snake Captured Off South Candler

James writes in…

I live off of South Candler Street in Decatur. I had to run back to my house this morning and saw several neighbors standing in my driveway. It turns out that a pretty big snake was hiding in my bushes. An Agnes Scott police officer, a Decatur police officer, and a Decatur animal control officer were at my house within a couple of minutes, and the snake was gently taken into custody. The officers were great (as usual) and one even snapped the attached pic, which I think is hilarious.
