Decatur Recreation Starting Move to Beacon Hill on Monday
The Decatur Recreation Center will begin the move to the Temporary Rec Center location at Beacon Hill, behind the Decatur Police Station on Monday, May 23 in preparation for our renovation. We will experience a temporary outage in our phone and internet services of approximately one hour during the transfer on Monday morning.
All camps and sports registration, etc. will be at the new site, located at 430 W Trinity Place beginning Monday afternoon.
All after-school programming, exercise and regular Rec Center activities will continue at Decatur Rec on Sycamore Street through Friday, May 27th. After that date, the Sycamore Street location will be closed to the public and our regular programming will be at Beacon Hill.
Summer camps will begin on Tuesday, May 31 at the Temporary Beacon Hill Location.
We look forward to serving the community from our Temporary Rec Center.
Beacon Hill is surely in need of some upgrades, but this sounds like a slightly better temporary location than the old meat-packing facility where city hall staff holed up while city hall was under renovation!
My understanding is that the temporary City Hall was formerly the A&P store and, at least to my observation, wasn’t really too bad.
Prior to the temp City Hall, it was for years the main offices of the DeKalb County Physical Plant Management offices. It was actually pretty nice inside.
Hmm…maybe I mixed the two together in my head. A&P/Physical Plant = meat packing plant!
Nope, it was the A&P before it was the Physical Plant before it was the temp City Hall.
And, in another bit of historical commercial trivia, what was the Twain’s building originally ? (I think we’ve asked this before)
Steve, Twain’s was a Firestone store and a Sherwin Williams paint store. I’ll have to dig deep in the memory bank to remember if it was a Firestone originally. The building housing the temp City Hall was the DeKalb (meat) Locker (not affiliated with DeKalb County) before it was the DeKalb Physical Plant. I don’t remember the A&P. I remember as a kid seeing whole sides of beef hanging on the loading dock as they were being delivered.
I have been told by several people that is was an A&P, but I wasn’t around here then, so I can’t confirm or deny. I have also been told that Twain’s was the Goodyear shop, but Firestone is similar, so it could have been that.
Awesome. I guess I wasn’t totally wrong!
DEKALB EMS HQ for a long time……where Twains is now.
Anyone know if Rec Center closing affects Rec Center playground? This is one of the few shaded playgrounds in town and a crucial spot in the summer for those of us trying to keep kids entertained and out of the punishing sun.
