Gunfire on West Parkwood Road Pre-Dawn Monday
Decatur Metro | May 16, 2011 | 2:56 pmWhat the hell? Siv points out this post on the Parkwood Garden Club blog…
West Parkwood Rd. residents Helen Ordway and Steve Elmore related harrowing stories to DeKalb county police early this morning. Steve and Erin Elmore’s mailbox was blasted by a shotgun fired from a car early Monday morning, May 16, sometime between 4:00 and 4:15 a.m. The shot was heard by the Elmores, by a resident across the street from the shooting, and by neighbors Helen Ordway and Sherri Lane on W Parkwood Rd. who live up the hill near East Lake Rd.
The Garden Club blog has ear-witness accounts from many neighbors about the incident. I believe that more than one of you mentioned hearing gunfire in this area on FFAF this morning. Also, if you have further info on this event…
…the case number initiated by Steve Elmore is 11-053563, and the officer’s name is Tom A. Green, Sr. He is with the Center Precinct at 770-724-7780.

Probably the perps were angry about being unable to pick up a case of beer late Sunday night and were driving around looking to shoot up some random stuff–with Sunday sales they would have been safely passed out instead.
Which is the part of Parkwood in City of Decatur? The east side of East Parkwood, right? And the part of North Parkwood that is north of Coventry?
North Parkwood becomes Decatur about half way between Scott and Coventry. Might just be one side of the road, east.
Knew I heard shots at 0400 last night.
I wonder what else was hit, I heard 3 rounds. 2 were shotgun 1 sounded like a med caliber pistol
I’m not trying to implicate Naaman Gibbetts, but….i just did.
Nope, no guns here–too dangerous.
They’re definitely going to get a nasty note from the post office.
Even after reading a lot of thoughtless posts on this blog, these one-liners are surprisingly clueless. I hope the homeowners have a better sense of humor than I do.
You’re right Ben. If you read the full post it sounds like there was an all out gun battle going on in the streets. Not funny.
I think the one-liners are funny. If anybody is clueless, it’s possibly the Parkwood residents who heard protracted gunfire, including shotgun blasts in fairly close proximity to their homes, and didn’t call the police. Even if the noise was an exploding transformer and not gunfire, it could still be dangerous and should be reported. I’m not out to bash our neighbors, but I honestly don’t get it.
How about “A sense of humor”?
whatever, man. you can swipe at me. I’ll stick to commenting on the posts. maybe if they come to your house blasting away I’ll have a better chance to see this as funny.
But wait, I was commenting posts–it just happened to be yours. Also, I pretty sure referring to posters as “clueless” can be classified as a “swipe”. Maybe we should get beyond all this, let it rest, maybe. You know what helps me get over things like this? Not taking them seriously, that’s right, a sense of humor.
If the photo above (and the article) was about huge shotgun blast holes in someone’s window or front door, I seriously doubt the posters here would be so careless with their one-liners, and, if they were, then you would have a point. But as it is I’m not going to be a hitching post for the horse you rode in on.
I must admit this picture made me think of Steve Martin yelling “He hates these mailboxes! Stay away from the mailboxes!”
You’re right. My comment was insensitive. That said, I do believe it would have been a different outcome if that mailbox had been armed. I’ve heard that the box turned over all of its mail to the perpetrator just as it was asked and they still shot it anyway.
KF, just let it go, man, let it go.
Ignore the critics. I LOL’ed on this one!
Me too. Keith is my favorite poster here.
That’s a hell of a hole in that mailbox. What kind of firearm does that?
The post says its a shotgun, but not what caliber, if that’s what you were asking…man, if this was my mailbox, I’d be incredibly POed.
I’m going to be nit-picky here–just for you Cuba: shotguns are classified according to gauge not caliber.
Nit-pick away, Gibbetties– what I don’t know about firearms could probably fill a dozen books!
Not sure about that hole but the neighbor I mentioned near Deepdene (who was awakened by the shots and a pick-up truck tearing down her street at the same time) learned from police that the person using the gun on her street was using a .40 caliber Glock handgun.
Thanks, Cuba and altmod; disturbing image.
i wonder if they are the same people that broke into about 10 cars/trucks on Woodlawn, Clarion and Nelson Ferry??
When the heck was that?
Our car was broken into on Woodlawn Sunday night. The officer had just come from a similar break-in on Clarion. They literally ripped the keyhole out of the door. Better than a broken window I suppose.
Did it happen overnight? Not sure how I missed this (fellow Woodlawner).
I noticed it Monday morning but not sure what time it happened because my car alarm didn’t go off. Seems like car alarms never work when they are supposed to.
MotherofTwo–please share what you know with your fellow PdL Heighters!
Sunday night between 12 and 4 cars. Originally we thought it was just our car but later I saw police up and down our street. Apparently they hit the YMCA on Saturday. Some cars were locked and broken into through the key hole – cars up in driveways as well as on the street.
hmmmmph…..
In re: Sunday night break ins. Both Of our cars were entered. Both were parked in our driveway. Neither was locked….nothing was taken. Brand new I pod and checkbooks were left behind. Diaper bag was taken and dumped two houses down.
Sorry to hear about your locks and intrusion on your family’s property. But I can’t help but smile at the thought of them stealing crap…
Some criminals are clever, but many are not!
You were very lucky. Leaving your cars unlocked is a mistake. We used to leave our cars unlocked in the driveway so they wouldn’t bust a window and even left some change so perps wouldn’t get mad and slash the seats. But they return to hit easy targets. In our case, they came back and stole the car a week later. Gave us the impetus to clean out the garage which now safely houses our cars.
The officer wrote the report and the supervisor filed it. The case will not be assigned to a detective or investigated at all. This is because its totally unsolvable and a waste of time.
The only way people like this are caught is in the act by patrol officers or when someone calls and a patrol officer happens to be in the area. Dekalb Co PD is very understaffed and calls like this often arent even dispatched for 10 or 20 minutes becuase officers are all handling more serious calls. Kinda sad but its not the cops fault, there just arent enough of them. This is why it pays to live in a place with a more responsive city police department.
Of course, the chances of catching the perpetrators “when someone calls and a patrol officer happens to be in the area” are severely diminished when potential witnesses wait several hours before bothering to call the police in the first place.
