Decatur Offers New Rebates For Home Energy Efficiency Improvements
Decatur Metro | April 25, 2011The City of Decatur just put info up on its website announcing “DecaturWISE” (Worthwhile Investments Save Energy), which “is designed to help residential customers increase the energy efficiency and comfort of their homes through a comprehensive home energy analysis and rebates for the installation of energy efficient improvements.” The program is funded by a Department of Energy grant to the City of Decatur under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
As the website notes, Georgia Power already offers up to $2,220 in rebates based on energy savings. (More info on that program HERE) Decatur’s grant will award up to $1,000 in additional rebates to the homeowner. According to the city, “the most impactful improvements to reduce energy use in Decatur homes include insulation, duct sealing and air infiltration reduction.”
Here’s the six step process on how to take advantage of this program, according to the city…
1. Contact a Program Contractor from the list below to schedule your home analysis. 2. Complete the home energy analysis. 3. Contractor will install energy saving upgrades. 4. Complete post-installation inspection 5. Contractor applies for rebates. 6. You receive money back!
The website lists three “participating contractors” in the area that can do the work and apply for the city’s rebate. A quick look at one of the participating contractors’ websites shows that while savings vary by area, it is possible to exceed 50% savings on these projects. Not a bad deal.
My experience with Bird Family Insulation was that they mark up their work so much that any rebate you get is basically a wash. I would look at other contractors.
Thiese prgrams are great. They are not of the three listed, but ECS listed below is part of the Georgia Power program, is local and does this as well as anyobdy. Keep them in mind.

I got a flyer in the mail from Ga Power last week for a $525 rebate to install a “high-efficiency” Marathon electric water heater. I haven’t called to discuss the savings/install cost with them yet. Has anyone done this or does anyone have an electric vs gas and can give an idea of monetary savings it might provide? Might this fall under the Decatur rebate?
Water heater replacements can definitely fall into the DecaturWISE rebate program, as well as the Georgia Power Home Energy Improvement program. Your energy assessment will outline several recommendations, as well as the cost and potential energy savings. You will work with your contractor to select which projects are right for your home and budget, while also meeting the energy saving targets of both rebate programs. All three of the participating contractors have been trained on the program and can help explain the details. Georgia Power has rebates specifically for electric water heaters, and Atlanta Gas Light recently announced a rebate program through June 30th for natural gas heaters. It’s a great time to make some upgrades!
