3 prom dates= guitar store, accounting office, ski bum (I think), all back West. Scarily, still in touch with 2 of them! I’m most excited to be having my hubby as Prom Date on 5/20!
I didn’t go to my prom. Do you think I can leverage that pathetic-ness and convince my husband to take me to the adult prom?
definitely apply the leverage! part of the reason we thought to have the event was that a bunch of people we know (husband included) hadn’t gone to their prom, so how fun to do it up right, now- with booze. Oh yes, that Prom Punch will be spiked.
They didn’t go to their prom? Dang. My high school years were idyllic. Didn’t seem so at the time but when I hear about the memories of others, I’m happy to have been a Raider.
Still with him after 14 years. Don’t think I’ll be able to convince him to go again.
+1
Why, on Facebook of course, along with the bully that used to question my masculinity every day on the bus (and not in a civilized fashion), the kid I used to humiliate because it was easier than standing up to all of the other kids who were doing it, and any number of other people who used to play a big role in my life but now play none at all except to fill my stream with pictures of their kids and Groupon links.
One of many reasons why I don’t spend a lot of time on Facebook.
Yeah, I didn’t go to my prom, either. That’s the beauty of Adult Prom, though. You can get a do-over, which doesn’t happen too much in life. It’ll be a lot of fun, like high school prom without all the jerks. Just nice people.
Living in New England married to a a much older man.
I might add, very wealthy much older man.
She’d better be in the kitchen fixin’ dinner, since I’m about to leave work.
Last time I googled, er, I mean, last I heard, one was in Seattle and the other in Worcester, MA. All of us a long way and a long time from the Saint Thomas Aquinas class of 1972.
Married in texas, married in augusta
Not sure what happened to Prom Date #1 – I picture him continuing to act like the Matt McC character from Dazed & Confused, although I sure hope he isn’t still dating high school girls at age 39! Prom Date #2 married another girl from my high school class and still lives in the small town where we went to h.s. Yawn.
I just saw that Sammy Hagar is 63! Can you guys believe that?
And he still can’t drive 55!
She married me……18 years later.
married in Tyrone, Ga. Those 3 proms with me were memorable, indeed.
Cheesy salesman in Louisiana somewhere. Thank God for higher education!
One is a teacher in South Carolina, the other is a housewife in DC. The one in SC still has the photo from the prom, with me wearing a baby blue tux! LOL.
OMG, contact her and ask her to post it! I wish I still had my parents’ old pictures from us at prom. After Mom died I asked my brother to manage the photos, but I havn’t seen anything from him since 2005. Gosh, those were good times and I’d love to see the pix.
I sense an “Eye on the Prom” pic stream coming- everyone start digging!
We should put them up anonymously and ask people to guess. That would be hilarious.
OMG– Rudy Cruz, and his 1973 white GTO! He took immaculate care of that baby, even tho it was almost 10 yrs old…don’t know where he is now, but damn, I’d like to have that car.
I remember my mother coming home from work on the day of the prom and taking me downtown to buy a special prom dress (otherwise, I would have had to wear one of my cousin’s old prom dresses). Mother paid $35 for that dress, it was lilac purple, strapless, and had a very big poufy skirt. Maybe she knew something I didn’t know, because that night was a disaster, and my long-time boyfriend (prom date) broke up with me in a very cruel way. He married unhappily, divorced, and we are still in touch. He told my son that he still loves me. Too bad, so sad, he can cook in his own deluded juices now, as I am happy to be who I am and where I am.
Didn’t go to the Prom because one of my best friends had a huge, non-formal, no-date-required, alternate party at her home on a lake and it was a blast. Looking back, that was a gutsy thing for her parents to do but I don’t remember any ruckus, any problems at all.
Coming up on our 17th wedding anniversary!
(Wait a minute – I can’t possibly be that old!)
he’s my best friend.
Despite my suspicions he would be in jail, my high school prom date works for the state of Florida in a respectable job in Tallahassee and appears to have avoided a criminal record. According to his Facebook pics, he also weighs more than 120 lbs now. Of course, so do I.
Prom Date #1 is happily married (for second time) and has a kid in the mid-west somewhere. Prom Date #2 is probably still in our hometown, I think selling insurance.
However, my own permanent prom date (husband) has informed me that he will not take me to the prom, so I am catapulted back into high school angst about finding a prom date. Luckily I am perfectly happy to draw on my collection of gay male friends and fun girlfriends to do so! (And I’ll probably call him at midnight to come pick me up!) LOL
Hmm, maybe your husband is afraid all your dates get arrested at Prom!
I think there will be many people there w/out an “official” date- dancing shoes all that seems required!- and even those can be left at home for anyone who just wants to hang out to some good tunes, have a few good drinks and smile at the outfits!
I’d love to hear about everyone’s original outfits.
Junior year, I had a big fluffy Scarlett O’Hara style lavender dress, off the shoulder with big ruffles, and LOTS of lace. Like someone vomited Laura Ashley. Purchased at the Johnson City, TN, mall (whose official name, on the sign, was “THE MALL.”
Senior year, tres sophisticated, cocktail length fuschia dress with sequins on the top in a “flame” pattern. Dyed to match high heel pumps, and hair in an updo with a LOT of teasing.
Two are married, one’s gay, and I’m not sure about the 4th one…
I think it’s a pretty cool story. I was asked to The Mary Louis Academy prom at the St. Regis Hotel in December 1969 by my best friend Jay’s ex-girlfriend, Cathy, kind of a rebound thing. I went, and we dated for a few months after that. I asked her to my prom at the Plaza Hotel in June. Fun night; it was capped by seeing Miles Davis at the Village Gate (he had two keyboard players that might. Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett. Yeah.).
Flash forward to 2009, and I was involved with a grammar school reunion for the Holy Family School., Flushing, NY, class of 1966. I looked at Classmates.com trying to track down some of our mates and ran across a listing for Cathy. I dropped her a line and we became Facebook friends.
Flash forward again to 2010 and my 40th Regis High School reunion in Manhattan. Hung out with Jay (we’ve stayed in touch all these years) and mentioned that I had been in touch with Cathy, who was widowed a few years ago and lives in Ohio. Jay is a dentist in New London, CT. I find out a few months later that his wife wasn’t with him because they were divorcing. I also find out that he and Cathy have become Facebook friends.
Fast forward to 2011. Cathy has surgery. Convalesces in New London, CT. Hmmm.
FM Fats, you saw Miles Davis, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett as your after-prom activity? You are the coolest poster on Decatur Metro, by my decree.
And it sounds like you should fly up and see this Cathy.
I expect to be nothing less than best man!
Also Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Grossman, and Airto were in that band. We hoped John McLaughlin might show up, but we were pretty happy with what we got. Dick Gregory was the emcee. It was the guys’ prom, and we went where WE wanted to go. I saw Shelley Berman at Upstairs at the Downstairs after the Bishop Reilly prom, and Sinatra sycophant Pat Henry at the Living Room after The Mary Louis Academy prom. Prom season in NYC was like no other 41 years ago. Probably still is.
Thanks for the nice comments.
Well, my after-prom activity was making out in a deserted life guard stand on Fort Lauderdale Beach, which was great in its way but I grew up with a fantasy of living in NYC. Probably fueled by my parents’ stories of Jersey City and going to some of the places you mentioned, the St Regis, The Plaza, albeit a generation earlier. That plus my older siblings’ record collections: Live at the Village Vanguard, etc. It all just seemed so cool. I still get a thrill when I go to New York.
“Dick Gregory was the emcee,” Like an afterthought. Laughed aloud.
That’s funny. My prom ended in a similar manner, but on Singer Island beach 45 minutes north of you.
Hah! If those life guard stands could talk…
Again, mucous garcias.
Magdalena is finishing up her PhD in Indiana. Tiffany is in the area, don’t really keep in touch; she was a “friend” date because we long ago agreed on the friend zone.
I haven’t spoken to my prom date since 1995! Oops! However, my current date is pretty awesome and I’m fairly certain I’ll be going home with him afterwards, particularly since we live together
