New Allen Wilson Housing a “Wonderful Blessing”
Decatur Metro | April 15, 2011The Champion newspaper has a nice article this week on Decatur public housing residents moving into the first completed phase of the new Allen Wilson apartments. A blurb for you…
After 70 years of housing some of Decatur’s lower income residents, the Allen Wilson Terrace complex is being rebuilt. Last month, residents filled the 40 units of the first phase of the construction which replaces a complex that was in disrepair, even after major upgrades beginning in 1970. The new construction consists of two, three-story buildings with one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Two-story townhouses top a ground floor consisting of flats.
“It’s beautiful,” Ferrell said of her new townhouse. “Nobody’s ever lived here before.”
Ferrell said she can breathe easier in the new building and it has abundant natural lighting. And it has a designated place for a washer and dryer, unlike her old apartment, which had the laundry machines in the kitchen.
“I thank God for it,” Ferrell said. “It’s a wonderful blessing.”
This is a great project – thank you Decatur Housing Authority! The Allen Wilson re-build has a long way to go, but hopefully Gateway will be next.
This is so great to hear. I thought it looked like people had moved in–thanks for the update.
These new homes make our community stronger and more desirable. This project spent a tremendous amount of time in the planning/development mode and am glad that it is finally coming to fruition. The City of Decatur will be seeing the benefit of this change for years to come -
Awesome. CoD, please have another open house when the next phase is completed. They apartments sound fantastic!
*the apartments (oops!)
For some reason I always thought these were ran/paid for by dekalb county, not decatur.
I drove past them yesterday and they look nicer than my house!
for these units how are they subsidized? 100%? or pro rata vs income?
Are you kidding? Nothing is 100% subsidized anymore except perhaps a temporary shelter bed. I was actually surprised at how much rent a Mom/child family were paying in Gateway a few years ago. Because her income was increasing as she got promoted, the rent rose real high and the Mom was considering whether it would be more prudent to buy a condo in the outer suburbs. Luckily she didn’t because she lost her job in the recent recession and could afford to stay in Gateway so her child could continue to attend CSD schools.
Serious, never kept up with subsidization of housing authority units. thanks for the info!
Are gateway tenants structured the same as the allen wilson units?
