Charleston, hands down. Both are beautiful, but Charlestown has better restaurants (with better service), & doesn’t feel as “touristy” as Savannah does these days…
As a tourist, vacationer: Charleston. More unique. The Savannah waterfront pales after a visit or two. Not sure I’d have the same answer if I knew both cities better and was thinking of a longer stay.
This is a very tough call. Charleston has wonderful tours with very knowledgeable guides and it has the battery. But I love walking in Savannah. Each of the squares is a little gem. I’ll take either, I guess.
I was just talking about this recently. I have been to both many times, and I just don’t get it when it comes to Charleston. I think Savannah is much better city to visit. Though, I would agree, Charleston does have the edge in quality eating.
Charleston, better yet, Kiawah for all the obvious reasons. Asheville’s awesome too but it can wait til April-ish.
My real pref now would be Everglades City or Cedar Key. Fish, birds, sun. MMMMM.
The Market Pavilion Hotel or the Vendue Inn. Both are in the heart of downtown, close to all the fabulous restaurants, King Street, and historical attractions (including the market), & barely 20 minutes from Folly Beach. The Battery has some nice bed & breakfasts, but for the money, I’d choose the hotels.
Savannah! I go at least once every year and I never get tired of it. We stay on Tybee a good bit and it’s so relaxed and laid back, plus lots of artists and galleries.
Asheville is another great place. We stayed in a little town called Black Mountain which is near Asheville and I think I prefer staying there. It’s a cute little town with lots of shops – the restaurant scene was lacking though. Oh, and NEVER NEVER NEVER at at the Old Mill Restaurant. I guess it’s a landmark, but that was the worst meal I’ve had in decades – even for touristy places.
looooooove magnolias….it took me back hearing that place mentioned as it has been more than 10 years since i’ve been there. thanks for the walk down memory lane!
Is a well written and photographed blog concerning two men who travel worldwide and stay in an area for 91 days. They were in Oveida, Spain, then Savannah (left early Feb. 2011), and now in Buenos Aires. Casually browse through the extensive blog and hear what they have to say about Savannah during their 91 days.
Asheville.
Charleston

Charleston: better restaurants. Yes.

Charleston!
savannah
Hands down, Charleston!
Charleston. Agree with cubalibre, the restaurants are better there.
Seconded.

i grew up in savannah so i’m biased, but charleston is awesome too!
Charleston, hands down. Food, sights, quality of and access to beaches – all better in S.C. Though I like the write in option in Asheville as well!
I can go to either…what time are we leaving??
Charleston FTW. It’s the food that tips it for me, too. And in season, the River Dogs.

Charleston, but I too would prefer Asheville.
Where are some nice places to stay? We are thinking of honeymooning in Charleston.

Francis Marion Inn – they also have getaway specials.
Savannah! I just love the quirkiness factor that Charleston doesn’t have, and the squares are beautiful.
Charleston: better food, better bars, better shopping, and it’s prettier IMO.

Savannah for sure…Tybee rocks! Just moved there!
I just spent Valentine’s Day in Charleston. Nothing better than dinner at Magnolias and a stroll through the streets of Ctown.
