Georgia Sunday Alcohol Sales Bill Outlook Good
Decatur Metro | February 3, 2011The AJC reports unprecedented optimism surrounding legislation that would allow the Sunday sale of liquor in the state of Georgia…
The chances of success for legislation letting voters legalize Sunday alcohol sales at stores got a lot better Wednesday when it easily zipped through a Senate committee.
In a dramatic contrast to past years, no one spoke out against the bill when it came before the Senate State and Local Governmental Operations Committee on Wednesday, and it passed on a 6-1 vote about 40 minutes after the meeting began.
The bill, if passed by both houses and signed by the Governor, would let city and county commissions set Sunday sales elections.
Chalk one up for freedom…
Next maybe we will allow our local breweries to sell direct to restaurants, bars & retailers. Our antiquated laws force them to pay a middle man (distributor) and ultimately raise our consumer price.
as much as i want this to happen, i feel like the lobbyists will prevent it
Next step remove the middle man!!
You know this is a gateway law to legalizing pot.
Now I’m thirsty AND hungry.
Great, just great. If people are going to be allowed to buy beer to drink at Sunday cookouts and picnics, or to buy a bottle of wine to enjoy with Sunday dinner, then that’s the kind of godless and chaotic world I just don’t want to live in. Every time one of you carries a bottle of wine out of a store on a Sunday, an Angel will lose its wings. Heathens!
As a man sow, shall he reap
And I know that talk is cheap.
But the hotter the battle
A the sweeter Jah victory.
With de heathen back dey ‘pon de wall!
De heathen back, yeah, ‘pon de wall!
De heathen back dey ‘pon de wall!
De heathen back, yeah, ‘pon de wall!
Wooo-hooo! It’s good to see Georgia finally being dragged into the 21st century.
The surprising thing about this is that the force behind this change is Nathan Deal. I’m sure the majority of Metro readers probably don’t care for him (I didn’t either…ethics and all) but it’s telling that he is going against his core supporters on this legislation. I’m pleasantly surprised…I wonder what else he has in store.
Well, I wouldn’t say he is the force behind the change. All he said (which was enough) was that he would not veto the bill if it came across his desk. If it was up to him, he would certainly keep the status quo.
The status quo being “the will of the people.”
Deal’s sound byte is “I don’t drink; I just believe in Democracy.”
Naaman — make that the 20th century.
Next goal: growlers. Across much of the Midwest, you can go to a microbrewery or beer store with an advanced selection (think Ale Yeah!) and purchase locally made draft beverages to go in these reusable 64-ounce jugs. You can buy one or pay a deposit. It’s eco- and wallet-friendly and perfect for football nights and impromptu parties. Down with the distributors!
Votes on Sunday sales will happen, now that Sonny is gone. I wonder, though, if this will hurt some of our favorite watering holes…
Finally, separation of God and Beer.
