Wild Heaven To Brew in Avondale Estates
Decatur Metro | January 24, 2011From the city of Avondale Estates “City Happenings” email…
It’s official! Wild Heaven Craft Beers has signed a lease on an 8,000 square foot building at the end of Maple Street next to the MARTA tracks with plans to renovate the vacant facility into a world-class brewery in Avondale Estates. Congratulations!
“We’re hoping we can be a part of reinvigorating the downtown, especially in the wake of (the Publix development) falling apart,” said Nick Purdy, president of Wild Heaven Craft Beers. “Our brewery is meant to be a destination, with tours, tastings and live music – so we hope to bring lots of people into Avondale in the coming years.”
So we’re sure your first question is: When will the brewery open? Wild Heaven is targeting sometime in the first half of 2012, according to Nick.
“The city of Avondale Estates has already zoned the building for our use as a brewery, authorizing tours and tastings,” he said. “We’re thrilled that our brewery will be part of the burgeoning Decatur beer scene and yet also call Avondale Estates home.”
And while we’re making big announcements, know that Wild Heaven is currently working on packaging right now in order to have its 12-ounce bottles out by springtime.
“We’re planning four-packs for both Ode To Mercy and Invocation,” Nick said. “Oh, and we’re working on a third beer. Well, a fourth, too, but you’ll have to wait and hear more on those later.”
In related news, the email also notes that Paste Magazine will also be moving to Avondale Estates, setting up shop in Alcove Gallery space next to Waffle House.
Thanks to A.M. for forwarding the email!

Congrats to Nick and Wild Heaven… and to Avondale!
Yay! I love Ode to Mercy.
That is such good news. Who needs Publix when you have that?
Stumbling distance!
I love Ode to Mercy too. What great news!
Hmmm, am I the only one who is actually disappointed that the brewery isn’t officially in Decatur? And now we don’t have an indie online music magazine to call our own??! If Avondale opens a yogurt shop I’m declaring war.
Come on, Decatur can’t have everything. Let us in AE have something.
No need to be disappointed. It’s the best of both worlds for Wild Heaven Craft Beers. The Maple Street location is located inside the Avondale Estates City Limits but has a Decatur ZIP code (same as the Twin Oaks Plaza where the Avondale Pizza Cafe and Our Way Cafe are located, for instance). Many folks do not realize that ZIP codes do not follow city or county lines, so there are a number of businesses in Avondale Estates that do not have the 30002 Avondale Estates ZIP code.
Alright alright, the Mayor Pro Tem makes a strong case. There needs to be some sort of coordinated city-to-city toast when the first bottle is poured in the new brewery.
Fantastic news! Here’s an idea – how about shuttle service back and forth a few times an evening from the brewery to downtown Decatur? That way out-of-towners could grab dinner in downtown Decatur, take a shuttle to the brewery and back again, then easily catch a cab if they’ve had too much to drink.
The less people drinking and driving through Decatur, the better.
Shuttle? Did I hear shuttle? It’s becoming a movement!
Pro-shuttle and proud!
Shuttle – great idea! What about a train instead? Maybe call it MARTA?
Sounds expensive…
Any word yet on whether or not they plan to sell growlers at the brewery?
As of right now, it’s illegal in the state of Georgia for manufacturers of alcohol to sell it directly to a consumer.
