Local Meat & Produce Market Opening in Oakhurst?
Decatur Metro | December 3, 2010KC Boyce writes on Twitter…
Local meat & produce market coming to #OakhurstGA in the old RealSource space (next to One Step at a Time).
In a follow-up, KC suggested I get in contact with Marc at U-Joint, since he’s behind the venture. I think I’ll do just that.
Wow! Now I switch my vote for neighborhood moving to Oakhurst. Especially, if I can find a home that meets my requirements in the other thread.
I didn’t know RealSource isn’t there anymore…where did they go?
East Decatur Station. The Keen brothers are great realtors.
Best news EVER!
AWESOME.
Yay! Yay! Yay!
That’s a shame. I wanted another church.
Please let this be true…. it would be so awesome! I will be there every other day on my way home from work.
Agree with “please let this be true”.! YAY
Isn’t the U-Joint already a Meet and Reproduce place? How many does one village need?
Awesome news.
And it is remarkable how every Oakhurst Village storefront that is not owned by Vision Properties is occupied and thriving. Just remarkable.
It’s also remarkable that this is the case throughout Decatur from what I can see with regard to Vision’s commercial properties.
I wonder how Vision can survive with no tenants. Do their residential properties make up the difference? Are Vision’s commercial properties appraised properly? Are they woefully under-appraised?
What I’ve heard is that the vast majority of their holdings were bought decades ago for bargain-basement, city’s goin’ to hell in a handbasket, prices and are owned outright. Given many have undergone no substantial renovations or redevelopment, I have to assume the appraisals remain low enough to carry the associated costs, even without a ton of tenant income.
Hmmmm… I will research the appraisals over the next few days and post them on this string. They are all public information. My guess is that they are way, way undervalued even though they haven’t been renovated. I could be wrong… but I have a hunch.
If anyone has the addresses of the properties post them here. That will save me some extra leg work.
Watch out, man! Every time I bring that up, the Vision apologists come out of the woodwork to shout it down.
I too am so surprised the “defend Vision Properties” for they let people use their parking lot supporters are not out in force yet either. Small town Gal where are you? This local meat and produce store smacks of elitism, shut it down…..
Boogaloo-
I’m pretty sure smalltowngal’s thrilled that all Oakhurst neighbors will now have easier access to fresh meat & produce.
Heck, you’ll even be able to cross that farmer’s market idea off your list of seniors initiatives. By the way, how are those coming along?
Initiatives are going well thanks for asking, first meeting is at the new church at the Vision Properties site…
Look forward to hearing the success stories of your seniors ideas.
(Found on the Dollar General thread for those who’d like to lend boogaloo a hand.)
I should’ve linked to the DG post that opened up the “two Decaturs” conversation:

It led to Geoff Koski’s’s compelling editiorial on DNO:

We’re blessed to live in Decatur where we’re able to change things when we put our hearts & minds into it.
boog, you may want to review previous threads and refresh your memory. I’ve never advocated shutting down — or blocking from opening — any legitimate business that might benefit our community. I have strenuously objected when others sought to do so.
Wow!!! That would be awesome.
Marc is such an awesome friend and sponsor of the community. Can’t wait!
I think Marc’s wife is opening this. Did I make that up??
I hope this is true! What a great addition to our awesome neighborhood!!!!!
Is it that Vision is “nice enough” to let folks park in their lot, or is it more likely that they just don’t care? Has there ever been any attempt to use the space for an outdoor art exhibition in the lot?
Excellent news. Hoping they open early 2011
This is really great news! AND NOW we need to put our $ where are mouth is (mouths are??) We have said we want this now it will be up to us to support it!!!
Also, don’t be so nasty to our giant vision properties neighbor next door. There is a reason why there hasn’t been this type venture there – it is a lot of space and not a clear cut case that the #’s would work. We (active, likely more privileged and vocal) on this board (and similar) say we want this and we would support it and we will need to show it by shopping there. And, because we will work to make it so widely successful – we will likely need that parking space that is free and available to us that we take for granted so often.
Super excited!
Marc and others took over the Oak Grove Market in 30033 so I’m sure he’s got plenty of ideas on how to get this up and running well.
