Trees Atlanta To Plant 100 Trees For Oakhurst Centennial
Decatur Metro | October 19, 2010 | 8:30 amAt last night’s Decatur City Commission meeting, Commissioner Patti Garrett announced that she had just received word that Trees Atlanta will be planting 100 trees in Oakhurst to commemorate the neighborhood’s 100th birthday.
According to Ms. Garrett, Trees Atlanta will begin by planting 50 trees at the Oakhurst Birthday celebration on October 30th from 9a-12p. Trees will be planted in memory of Oakhurst Community Garden founder Sally Wylde, so fittingly planting will begin at the corner of Oakview Road and 5th Avenue, where the first Oakhurst Community Garden plot was located.
That is very cool. What a great organization. We like to get out and do the tree tour in Oakhurst. If you haven’t done that, it’s a very pleasant thing to do on a nice Sunday morning.
Are they replacing the ones that have died in the medium of Oakhview?
Oakhurst Momma, we will be replacing some of the dead trees on Oakview and planting new trees too. The project is sponsored in part by The UPS Foundation and the Decatur Craft Beer Festival. CB, so glad you are out and about enjoying the trees of Decatur and the Oakhurst Arboretum! For anyone who is interested, you can find out more about volunteering with Trees Atlanta and view a self-guided walking tour map of the Oakhurst Arboretum at http://www.treesatlanta.org. Incidentally, Sally Wylde was a dear friend to Trees Atlanta. She helped us store trees for a huge Decatur tree planting at the Oakhurst Community Garden back in 2002 and supported many Trees Atlanta grant applications over the years. What a dear lady–miss her so much and can’t wait to celebrate her life and Oakhurst’s 100th with trees!
Thanks TreesAtlanta!
Trees Atlanta, where/how can we volunteer on the 30th? Keep up the great work!
