Resident Reports Decatur Diner Might Finally Be Open
Decatur Metro | September 28, 2010UPDATE: Looks like the answer is “NO”.
Gonna have to crowd-source this one.

My wife just drove by the Decatur Diner and she said the “Coming Soon” signs are down and it looked like they were serving someone. IS IT TRUE?!?!?!?!?!
Can anyone confirm/deny?
Hmmm. I was driving around last night looking for a good place to do some work on my laptop without children and almost stopped at the Decatur Diner because it sure looked open. But then I remembered that folks reported that the lights were always on there and I figured that what I saw was just set up. My experience last night makes me warm to the idea of an all-night diner. Where does one go when one has to get out of the house to accomplish some work, doesn’t have access to a university library, doesn’t want to trek all the way to the office, needs decent lighting to read and work which Java Monkey and Kavanna’s don’t have, and Dancing Goat closes at 7 PM. All I could come up with in downtown Decatur was Starbucks and even that closes at 9 PM.
K- I have been looking for something similar. Would be nice to have something moderately low key/quiet in the 9ish-10ish hours to go. I don’t drink coffee at night, and sometimes I just don’t want anything but I would feel guilty not purchasing something. College libraries for non-students and even alums kick visitors out early. Where is this magical place?
I hear you, karass. My husband and I are both students, and we constantly run into the same issue when trying to find a place to study/work. We’re at Kavarna mainly, but a change of scenery–and something that’s open until the wee hours of the morning–would be nice.
Yep. Kavarna closes at 10 p.m. during the week (later Fridays), and I’ve occasionally had to skedaddle when I wouldn’t mind working a little later.
Is the lighting good enough at Kavanna to read fine print and get work done?
It’s pretty dim in there, but some of the tables along the wall have one or two of the halogen spotlights aimed at them.
Jackhammering outside the church street entrance to Decatur Diner today at about noon. Couldn’t say it was or was not open, but there was both hub and bub to be seen.
Will walk that way on my way home from work and check – 3 weeks ago they told me “a couple of weeks” – but I had heard that before… I did notice that the “coming soon” signs were down, and wondered whether that meant they were open, or they wanted folks to stop calling them the “Coming Soon Diner”!
I think they should rename themselves the Coming Soon Diner. Even the decor-haters would probably start patronizing them after that concession.
I am a decor-hater, but I’m still excited about Greek food that is within walking distance of my house!
There is a great little Greek spot right behind Parkers on Ponce.. its called Andryannis Greek Bistro..the food is soo awesome and fresh and excellent health score too.. you just gotta follow the signs they have up on the sidewalk but its worth the search..
Second that !
I’m at Yogurt Tap right now & the diner is not open. Lots of work going on & part of the sidewalk closed.
Dang. I was gearing up for a tuna melt & some mile-high Mounds cake…
I did stop by after work. The Greek gentleman there gestured with some frustration back at the work being done at the Church Street entrance sidewalk, and said, basically, “Not my fault, city found another problem.” In response to my question of when, he said “2, 3 weeks, top” – but then, that seems to be the standard (maybe hopeful) response.
I drove past about 9:30, and per normal, all the lights were blazing! Someone was sitting in the one of the booths by the window doing paperwork – I’m guessing either an employee counting imaginary takings, or Karass had snuck in to study
I got off MARTA at 11 and I was heading toward Kroger. Crossed Church and then had to dodge around the closed sidewalk. Looked through the window and saw that the floor had been jack-hammered open, right through the foundation into the red clay. There was a three-foot-deep trench running across the entire back of the serving area, with what looked like new PVC being laid. Don’t hold your breath.
There must have been a water main problem. That would explain the delays and pretty much everything!
How could the other places have stayed there with no one noticing all the problems? That space was empty for a bit. Maybe a better time to address them would have been? Perhaps they didn’t know.
That’s no good. I wonder if it was something that previous tenants ignored/didn’t know about or something the city/county was going to do and just got around to it?
My guess is that they don’t have a sufficiently large grease trap. Those requirements have changed since the Atl. Bread Company opened. If you look on the Commerce St. sidewalk besides Ted’s you can see how many manhole covers they have.
